Beautiful Girls - Why is this film so under appreciated?

Am I the only one who feels Beautiful Girls is a criminally underrated and under-appreciated film? I do not know how many times I have seen it but I never get tired of it. The movie is one of the best "character based" films of all time IMO. Anyone else agree or perhaps disagree?

I agree. Excellent film. It gets some conversation around here occasionally.

It's all about the perv factor with the Natalie Portman character.

It never jumped out as a movie that appealled to the mass public. Film fans (in general, of course) recognize it as a really strong movie and most of the non-film buffs that I know who've seen it, liked it, but it just wasn't a movie that "caught eyeballs" when it came out.

Sadly, there are many films that fall into this catagory.

Rosie O'Donnell was hilarious in this film. Liked the Pharmacy scene.

What ever became of the special edition that was in the works? I seem to remember that the director died before filming the audio commentary but hadn't he already approved of other material that would have gone into the special edition?

Man, I love this movie. Great performaces all around (especially the Hutton/Portman/Thurman scenes), even from Michael Rappaport who I usually find annoying. The R2 UK disc is anamorphic and has DD5.1, if you can put up with PAL speedup.

Well said, it is criminal. The movie is incredible. So real, so powerful. Great characters. Even someone like Rosie pulls off an amazing performance.

I remember thinking it was good, but it wasn't something I would throw in a top 10 list - or even a top 100. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to recommend it if someone asked.

I was impressed with this movie when I first saw it. It's a very well done character driven movie. One of the most solid and rewatchable movies around, I'd say.

Did this get a large theatrical release? I don't think it did, I think it found its' fan base on video and cable.

According to boxofficemojo the widest release it had was 800 theaters (total gross $10m), so I don't think that would be considered wide even in 1996.

It's not under-appreciated in my corner of the world. The wife and I have several friends who love this film as much as we do.

For some reason I started thinking about this movie again, and remembered how fantastic it is. From the posters/DVD covers you'd expect a really lame superficial rom-com, but that couldn't be farther from reality.

Excellent writing, spot-on performances (and yes I include a GREAT cameo from Rosie O'Donnell), fantastic soundtrack... truly one of the better movies about relationships made over the last 25 years.

I agree. The wistful relationship between Portman & Hutton is priceless.

One of my favorites. Love Ted Demme's work. Sad his life was cut short.

I gave this movie a look in one of those short-lived "movie-of-the-month" threads on another forum and was greatly surprised by this.

I don't know why but the brief Rich Man, Poor Man conversation just brought an absolute smile to my face.
