My initial reaction was that it sucked. On second viewing, it's okay. But if we are comparing it to WOWS...there's no comparison.

Why am I not surprised that Eddie Money would think this.
Then again, Wolf was a substantially better movie.

It really doesn't matter. Because I just pressed:

Watched this a second time. Still too damn long. Great style and the acting was top notch, but I kind of think David O. Russell just didn't do a very good job directing or supervising the editing of the film.
As others have said, not even in the same league as Wolf of Wall Street.

No, that's my point. Because of the awards recognition, I think people were expecting a film on par with Scorsese's best or something, and while the movie is very good, it's not THAT good. If it had just been a big movie released in the fall, without all the buzz, I think many more people would have a higher opinion of it.

I enjoyed the first scene more than anything else in the movie. This just felt like it was Russell trying to do his best imitation of Scorsese and failing miserably. Such a Goodfellas and Casino vibe, but far inferior. The story i found to be pretty dull and the acting throughout was average. Bale was the best thing about it. At this point i think that Jennifer Lawrence is getting way more credence for her acting chops than she deserves. An Oscar nomination for her in this role? I don't think so. I think she has talent, but she did not show it in this role in my opinion.
This year it felt like a lot of movies were being hailed as classics when i found them anything but classics. Felt the same about Wolf of Wall Street...started out good but quickly lost my interest and by the end of the movie i hated it and just wanted the thing to end.

I loved Wolf of Wall Street, it was a joy to watch. My issue with American Hustle wasn't that it was hyped up, and I don't hate the movie, it was just dull, and I got a little impatient with it - by the time the first hour was over I think my brain was pretty much done with it and yet it still kept going, then a couple good scenes happen followed by more dull stretches. It was less expectation and more that in the moment, I wasn't really entertained. There's nothing to really grasp on to, I didn't care about any of the characters, and the plot was too scattershot to give any sense of momentum, it was rudderless. That doesn't inherently mean it'll be a bad movie, but it only works if what's on screen is keeping you entertained.
I get why Lawrence was nominated, it wasn't for her performance as a whole but more specific scenes that she did do very very well. She reminded me of a 1970s version of Scarlett Johansson's character from Don Jon, but Johansson pulled off the accent better.

I liked them both, but WOWS is now in my BR collection and AH isn't. Bottomline: WOWS was way more entertaining.

Awesome. Have WOWS at the top of my "To Watch" pile and am greatly anticipating a great movie viewing experience.

Saw it today and found it to be entertaining even though it was unoriginal and a bit too long. Worth watching for the acting.

Just saw this again and all I keep thinking about is that almost every main cast member was in a superhero movie. Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, both sheiks (Michael Pena and Saïd Taghmaoui), and Bradley Cooper. It’s all I could focus on lol.

Great movie too. Probably my favorite from Russell.

With the amount of Marvel and DC movies the last 20 years, it's hard to watch a regular movie without seeing at least a few actors who appeared in those franchises.

It's getting less remarkable now that comic book movies are a mainstream genre themselves. It'd be like saying "X amount of actors in this movie from 1962 appeared in a WWII film (or alternatively a Western) at one point or another". And now that I think about it, for that random year, half the cast of Hatari were in both Westerns and war movies.
