It really is, but understating a lot things to help sell those little moments, it comes close to boring at times. Wish there was a scene of Mark's reaction to finding out his brother's murder.

A lot of times I just forgot that it's Carrell.

Everything in Moneyball was tight and to the point, it didn't have a ton of personality, but it was a professionally made package. Of course I may of just been a bit bored.

Saw this today, thought it was all right, I agree that they could have cut some, but good performances all around.

Glad I'm not the only one. Think this nowhere near deserves a Best Picture nom.

Re: Foxcatcher -- D: Bennett Miller S: Tatum, Carrell, Ruffalo -- 2014

Watched this after Whiplash today. I liked it, it is good...but shouldn't be a threat to win BP as originally hyped. Good performances by all. Really great to see Steve Carell play someone so out of his comfort zone. I also thought that there was a good sense of foreboding throughout, excellent atmosphere.

I could see this being nominated in a few categories, but I'd be surprised if it won any.

Still, it's one of the better movies of 2014 and worth checking out.

Overall I felt the story lacked a lot of substance and interesting plot points. Sure a few noteworthy events occur, but nothing to base an entire movie around. The film drags on with a lot of characters, themes, and scenes which do little to nothing to advance the story. A solid 20-30 minutes could have easily been cut. The acting is good, but nothing all that extraordinary. Was nice to see Steve Carell do something a little different. Overall, if you're really into dark indies and/or wresting movies, give this a shot. For most casual moviewatchers though, I think they're not going to enjoy. 5.0 / 10
Pretty much agree with all of this.

Not that it matters, but what does P.U. Kids mean?

I would assume it means "pick up kids". He's shown earlier to have his brothers phone # written on his hand, so its probably one of those small characters bits that doesn't necessarily add to the story but does create a more authentic version of who Dave was.

This was an odd movie. It almost feels like a recreation of footage that would be in a documentary, that talking heads would be talking over. The tone of it is even very in tune with a documentary.

The problem is, it feels like it'd fit a standard 75 minute documentary time allocation, and there's another hour on top of it. It's meticulously made, it just isn't very interesting.

Mark Schultz tweets his extreme anger with the director of Foxcatcher, Bennett Miller

Mark Schultz, the wrestler that Channing Tatum is playing, went on an epic twitter rant about the portrayal of him in the movie, going as far as threatening the director.

Some of the tweets:

What a baby...basically he didn't like that some people thought he may be gay. Or there is some implied homosexuality.

I think the scene where DuPont goes to Schultz for a late-night "practice" where we see Schultz face with Dupont on top of him is the scene. I certainly read it as a sexual encounter, but the people I saw it with didn't see it the same way.

I thought Schultz would be more angry that Tatum played him as a mentally challenged dude. Certainly didn't seem like a guy who could write a book.

I saw that scene as sexual as well. The shot was tight on Channing's face and I thought he was being penetrated by Carell's character.

The weird thing is that Mark Schultz saw this movie at Cannes over seven months ago and it was released in the U.S. about six weeks ago and he's just going on a rant about it now? Does not compute.

Re: Foxcatcher -- D: Bennett Miller S: Tatum, Carrell, Ruffalo -- 2014

This movie was mainly "meh" for me. The slow simmer route to the conclusion just didn't really pay off, and in spite of performance of Carell and Ruffalo, the script is so somber and uninteresting and unentertaining. And the story being told is pretty much a work of fiction in director Bennett Miller's mind, it's basically a poor use of movie-making resouces.

I give it 1.75 stars, or a grade of C-, mainly for the script.

Sometimes, I see a movie and think it's primarily a work of fiction and I'm just blown away that it's actually a true story.

Other times, I see a movie and know it's a true story and think that it would have been a pretty shitty story if it was purely a work of fiction.

Foxcatcher falls into the second category.

I think it's safe to say the buzz for this movie is all but gone.

Just watched it. Liked it more than most of you. I like that it was creepy and unsettling. Thought Ruffalo was fantastic. Carrell was pretty good against type (though I would have rather had Miles Teller in the Best Actor category last year over Steve Carrell in this).

For those interested, the 30 For 30 documentary on this story (and approved of by Mark Schultz, who is interviewed in it) came out last week. It's called The Prince of Pennsylvania and it will repeat on 10/27 on ESPN2 in the evening. I'm going to check it out then.
