The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rds_Poster.jpg

Host: Seth McFarlane

Date & Time: Sunday, February 24th ~ 5:30pm PST (8:30pm EST)

Site: Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California

Summary:
Spoiler:
The 85th Academy Awards are notable for several rare and first-time feats. Amour (French) became the first film in twelve years to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film; the last film to do so was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Mandarin) in 2000. Amour also became the first foreign-language film in six years to earn a Best Picture nomination; the last film to do so was Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese) in 2006.

Several age-related records were set: Emmanuelle Riva, at 85, became the oldest nominee in the Best Actress category. This record was previously held by Jessica Tandy, age 80, who was nominated (and won) for Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. Quvenzhané Wallis, at age 9, became the youngest nominated actress in the Best Actress category. This record was previously held by Keisha Castle-Hughes who was nominated at the age of 13 for Whale Rider in 2003. Jennifer Lawrence, at 22, became the youngest Best Actress two-time nominee, having previously been nominated in 2010 for Winter's Bone.

Silver Linings Playbook became the first film in 31 years to receive nominations in all four acting categories; the last film to do so was Reds in 1981. Silver Linings Playbook also became the first film in eight years to be nominated in the "Big Five" categories; the last film to do so was Million Dollar Baby in 2004.
In regard to acting merits, for the first time in the history of the awards, the Best Supporting Actor category consists only of previous winners. Alan Arkin, Tommy Lee Jones, and Christoph Waltz have each won Best Supporting Actor; Phillip Seymour Hoffman has won Best Actor; and Robert De Niro has won in both award categories. Also, out of the 20 total acting nominations, only 4 of them (Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Emmanuelle Riva, and Quvenzhané Wallis) are first time nominees.

Les Misérables became the first movie musical to be not only nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Hugh Jackman) since Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 2008, but also for Best Picture since Chicago in 2003.

The Walt Disney Studios hasn't had this much success at the Academy Awards since when Mary Poppins earned thirteen Oscar nominations at the 37th Academy Awards in 1965; Disney earned a record-breaking seventeen Oscar nominations in the studio's history in a single year: twelve for Lincoln and one apiece for The Avengers, Brave, Frankenweenie, Paperman, and Wreck-It Ralph.

I going to say 11 minutes over with 30 minutes that could have easily been cut.

First 4 votes for Argo. The director snub was the best thing that ever happened to that film's chances.

I'd love for Argo to win (or Django Unchained/Silver Linings Playbook...but those are major longshots).

I know Argo has been picking up all the best pic awards at every other ceremony, but Lincoln still seems likeliest to win based on Oscar history (to my chagrin).

I didn't care that much for Argo, but I voted for it since I think it will win.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)

I would also like to see Silver Linings sneak a win but think it's Argo/Lincoln neck and neck at this point. Best Director will probably give it away.

I saw Lincoln on Friday and easily for me had the most powerful performances of 2012. I thought it was an excellent film. Still haven't seen Argo even though I got it the other day. I'm going to have to watch it before tonight.

Word has it as a toss up between Spielberg and Ang Lee for Director. This oscars is kind of all over the place if Lincoln doesn't clean up. Lee beat Spielberg last time (Brokeback vs. Munich)

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)

I guess the bridges Russell burned haven't been rebuilt yet.

Be interesting if Lee gets Best Director and Argo gets Best Picture.

If Spielberg gets Director I think he gets Picture too.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)

It's either a clean sweep for Lincoln or it's getting locked out (aside from DDL). I think O'Russell has re-built most bridges with The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, but despite getting great acting in SLP all you have to do is rewatch The Fighter and realize the directing wasn't awards worthy in SLP.

Silver Linings was originally supposed to be made with Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel, that would have been, interesting.

So 'Silver Linings Playbook' is not expected to win? I had gotten the idea it was a favorite?

Okay, that's an interesting statement. Post or repost your top ten from last year.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)

Argo has won the SAG, PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE, Golden Globe, and BAFTA. So...it's not a neck and neck race for Best Picture. If Argo doesn't win Picture, it'll be a huge surprise. Precursor awards matter.

I made my picks in the other thread. If there is some crazy upsets tonight, I think it'll be Silver Linings Playbook beating Argo for Adapted Screenplay. SLP did the same thing at the BAFTA and could carry over. The other big upset pick would be Russell winning for Director. Assuming Lawrence wins, that would give SLP a true runner up tally of Director, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay.

That's not how I'm predicting, but if we have an upset, I see SLP as the recipient. But I do have Life of Pi leading the night with 5 Oscars. I have Argo with 4 and everything else with 2 or less. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Les Miserable takes home more than 2. It could make a splash in the technical categories.

I'm sure Argo will win Best Picture. Impressive for a movie that pandered to the popcorn audiences than sticking with the truth.

I thought that Amour was the best film this year. I wasn't impressed with any of the other films nominated (I haven't seen Life of Pii yet).

I think it's also possible that Amour is a big winner. If it somehow wins for Original Screenplay, and then takes Foreign, that might give us a hint that Haneke takes Director.

I've heard that Supporting Actor won't be given out until about an hour in. That makes sense as its easily one of the more contested categories. I think anyone except Arkin has a shot. He hasn't won anything for Argo and I don't see an Argo wave tonight. I took Waltz because he won the Globe and BAFTA. Only 3 times has an actor lost that category after winning those 2. Those are good odds.

Jones could win due to the SAG victory. I've read a few people saying Hoffman will take it due to his "lead" performance in this category. And of course, DeNiro has campaigned the hardest and is in a popular ensemble film.

Django was nominated and is on your best of list, you dork. So, by saying Silver Linings Playbook is the best movie nominated, you've invalidated your whole previous statement and your own list. I've defeated you so you must now hand over your mod powers!
