My fiancée hates awards shows but says we can watch tonight. I predict it will go 19 mins over.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
First 4 votes for Argo. The director snub was the best thing that ever happened to that film's chances.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I'd love for Argo to win (or Django Unchained/Silver Linings Playbook...but those are major longshots).
I know Argo has been picking up all the best pic awards at every other ceremony, but Lincoln still seems likeliest to win based on Oscar history (to my chagrin). |
Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I didn't care that much for Argo, but I voted for it since I think it will win.
|
Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I would also like to see Silver Linings sneak a win but think it's Argo/Lincoln neck and neck at this point. Best Director will probably give it away.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I saw Lincoln on Friday and easily for me had the most powerful performances of 2012. I thought it was an excellent film. Still haven't seen Argo even though I got it the other day. I'm going to have to watch it before tonight.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I guess the bridges Russell burned haven't been rebuilt yet.
Be interesting if Lee gets Best Director and Argo gets Best Picture. If Spielberg gets Director I think he gets Picture too. |
Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
It's either a clean sweep for Lincoln or it's getting locked out (aside from DDL). I think O'Russell has re-built most bridges with The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, but despite getting great acting in SLP all you have to do is rewatch The Fighter and realize the directing wasn't awards worthy in SLP.
Silver Linings was originally supposed to be made with Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel, that would have been, interesting. |
Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
So 'Silver Linings Playbook' is not expected to win? I had gotten the idea it was a favorite?

I asked the mods to merge the two Oscar threads, so we don't lose any votes/info.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I think that Argo will win the big one.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I think Argo will win, but the best movie on that list is Silver Linings Playbook. However none of those films made it into my personal top 10, so fuck 'em.

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
Argo has won the SAG, PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE, Golden Globe, and BAFTA. So...it's not a neck and neck race for Best Picture. If Argo doesn't win Picture, it'll be a huge surprise. Precursor awards matter.
I made my picks in the other thread. If there is some crazy upsets tonight, I think it'll be Silver Linings Playbook beating Argo for Adapted Screenplay. SLP did the same thing at the BAFTA and could carry over. The other big upset pick would be Russell winning for Director. Assuming Lawrence wins, that would give SLP a true runner up tally of Director, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. That's not how I'm predicting, but if we have an upset, I see SLP as the recipient. But I do have Life of Pi leading the night with 5 Oscars. I have Argo with 4 and everything else with 2 or less. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Les Miserable takes home more than 2. It could make a splash in the technical categories. |
Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I'm sure Argo will win Best Picture. Impressive for a movie that pandered to the popcorn audiences than sticking with the truth.
I thought that Amour was the best film this year. I wasn't impressed with any of the other films nominated (I haven't seen Life of Pii yet). |

Re: The 85th Annual Academy Awards (2013 Discussion)
I've heard that Supporting Actor won't be given out until about an hour in. That makes sense as its easily one of the more contested categories. I think anyone except Arkin has a shot. He hasn't won anything for Argo and I don't see an Argo wave tonight. I took Waltz because he won the Globe and BAFTA. Only 3 times has an actor lost that category after winning those 2. Those are good odds.
Jones could win due to the SAG victory. I've read a few people saying Hoffman will take it due to his "lead" performance in this category. And of course, DeNiro has campaigned the hardest and is in a popular ensemble film. |

Holy shit...you're right!
This just goes to show how little I care about the Oscars. And you can have my mod powers when you pry them from my cold, dead, well-manicured hands. |
