Re: Favorite female filmmaker?

There's not a lot I can really think of at the moment, at least in terms of directors. Laura Ziskin did a great job producing the "Spider-Man" films; I was so sad to hear she'd passed away. One of my fave films is "Deep Impact", which Mimi Leder directed. Drew Barrymore founded her own production company a while back, called Flower Films. Amy Heckerling scored big with the "Look Who's Talking" series as well.

Re: Favorite female filmmaker?

As Moviefan pointed out, you left off Amy Heckerling, who I would argue is better known these days for FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH and CLUELESS than LOOK WHO'S TALKING.

You left off Susan Seidelman, who directed DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, MAKING MR. RIGHT, COOKIE and SHE-DEVIL, in addition to episodes of "Sex and the City."

I have a soft spot for Lexi Alexander whose one film, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE is a superhero/crime/action masterpiece. She's also not in the poll.

There are a number of prominent women directors in other cinemas, including Hong Kong and Japanese cinema. Ann Hui is a major filmmaker in Hong Kong and I've seen one of her films, AH KAM (1996), a drama about a stuntwoman played by Michelle Yeoh and co-starring Sammo Hung. Kao Pao-shu is an actress who directed kung fu films in the 1970s, including Angela Mao's BANDITS, PROSTITUTES AND SILVER (1977).

My favorite woman director of all time, though, is Ida Lupino, the Hollywood star who made some hard-hitting low-budget dramas in the early '50s (including OUTRAGE, about a rape victim, and THE BIGAMIST about...a bigamist!) and then went on to direct episodes of TV series like "Thriller" and "The Untouchables."

And Johnny Dangerously, and European Vacation. I've easily watched Amy Heckerling movies more than all the other female-directed films combined.

Re: Favorite female filmmaker?

I don't know who to choose. There are so few that I have watched and the ones I do are few as well. These four are the ones that get me out there to watch something.

Lynne Ramsay
Kelly Reichhardt
Sarah Polley
Kathryn Bigelow.

Reichhardt is an interesting one. Something about her work. I don't know what though. I like it but at the same time...it's not for me.

As said, Lexi Alexander is a fucking force when it comes to crazy ass action. War Zone was easily better than the previous Punny film due to her direction of the action. Brutal as fuck and what it needed to be. Sadly...there was a shit script for it.

Katheryn Bigelow is the only one I'm familiar with and I still couldn't bring myself to vote for her.

I was just waiting for Ash to say Ida Lupino!

Actually she's one filmmaker I want to know more about. She has an autobiography out there but I haven't gotten it yet.

One of the most acclaimed and derided!

It's like it has two people inside of itself making two different films at once! Genius!
