Never heard of this till now. The info on this is kind of tight lipped. It's promoted as a Stephen Chow film but it's produced by him to be exact. Which is still a Chow film. I was sad to find that this isn't directed by him. Either way...looks interesting. Chow himself did some work on that tale as well. I'm also reading that Chow will play the Monkey King. But I also see that he's NOT cast at all in some parts I find. I can't trust what info I'm finding on the actors aside from Shu Qi, who is very visible in that trailer. Looks neat and crazy. Always up for something Kung Fu.

I love Journey to the West, I find Shu Qi to absolutely yummy, and I enjoy Stephen Chow's work (yes, even that flick about the toy alien) but that teaser doesn't do it for me.

Alright. Turns out Chow was co-directing this with Kok. Has made a shit ton in China. $208 million China, USD. Also seems that they've talked about a sequel to this, intentions being that Chow acting in it as well. Huang Bo plays the Monkey King, so my original info was incorrect on that.

Movie was alright, it's "cute" and has a lot of similarities to Kung Fu Hustle in terms of live-action cartoon.

Still nothing on Shaolin Soccer or God of Cookery.

Yeah, it's alright but it is his weakest film.

I rank it with CJ7, a little above.

A Chow Kok production.

I guess 2013 was Year of the Monkey, as Donnie Yen already had his released.

I agree with the above. Not one of his best but I don't think is one of his worst neither. I might be biased in the fact that I like Shu Qi and I'm a sucker for the "Journey to the West" adaptation.
The thing is that this movie is rated PG13 on Netflix but I felt that it could have been rated higher because of its violence. Yeah even though it was CGI.

I didn't realize that Chow-Yun Fat was also in that version:

I might have to import The Monkey King since I don't think a NA distributor picked it up.

Started watching it just now. It's entertaining so far but the CGI and green screen use has been on total overload for the first 12 minutes. I'm amazed I'm now actually seeing a practical location. Still, entertaining enough (as a family film) that I'll likely import it as well.

There are three releases on BD: 2D, 3D, and 3D + 2D.

Thank you! So is a family film? I thought it be geared to more to the Action/Fantasy crowd.

It feels like a family film to me. It's not a kiddie flick but it seems more geared towards tweens. Basically, it's the kind of film you can watch with your 13-year-old and both feel entertained.
