Yuen Wo Ping was the action director for the Matrix movies & Kill Bill I and II. IIRC, he got some notoriety in the States for his work on those movies. But you're right. Unless you're a hardcore Hong Kong or Martial arts movie fan, most casual American movie-goers, especially the kids won't know or care who he is.

It's a ballsy move by TWC, but the amount of people that will now view the film probably just skyrocketed.
Fuck AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and the other major chains blackballing TWC. You want to drive up revenue on a failing business model? Make a movie theater a place consumers would go out of their way for. It shouldn't rely entirely on the studios and their output.

Haven't been to a Regal or Cinemark theater in a long time.
How about TWC and Netflix release a 100% Cinemark & Regal Free Edition which will include a free bag to sneak beverages and candy into their theaters.

Harry Shum was actually pretty good in Revenge of the Green Dragons. I don't know about his martial arts skills but I will give this a watch.

Looks laughably bad. And wtf is up with the music selection? The CGI sequences are as bad as Shaolin Soccer.

Just read this was shot in English. Why? Did TWC think Netflix viewers wouldn't watch it in Mandarin with subtitles?

Other than the lousy CG I think it looks fine, but that trailer was really poorly made.

That Bad Moon Rising cover was awful. I hope they aren't dumbing this down for Netflix millennials with a pop score. Tan Dun's score in the original was excellent.

The footage looks fine. Iffy CGI or not. Still not totally comfortable that they shot this in English though. Will be interesting to see Yen act in English. We don't see much of it. He's a good actor at least. Such an underutilized actor here though. Glad he got some love from SW w/ Rogue One. That'll be fun to see.
They got that guy from Dragon. Jason Scott Lee. I guess that's cool?
Not sure if Woo-ping is the right guy to direct in English but... at least he'll be a major force w/ the action. That man... knows his shit w/ wirework.
Actually... taking this discussion to HK.... Have there been any directors w/ no action background... actually directing the martial arts action? I'm guessing there was some of that in the 1970s... but onward? I dunno.
Anyway... looks interesting... I don't think it'll have any of the emotional depth that Ang Lee's film had but... I'll go for it and see wtf happens.

"Oh sweet, Netflix made a martial arts movie I don't have to read with that former Bond chick." is what I'm assuming they were going for.

So in English with the soundtrack by Kavinsky. Dammit. I wanted this to be a little more faithful to the original. Here's to hoping it's just a bunch or moronic people in Netflix marketing giving his to us and the movie itself is good. And in Mandarin. But according to IMDb, it is in English.

Yeah he speaks fluent English.
As soon as I saw Harry Shum Jr. cast, that brought some suspicion. He's Costa Rican and doesn't speak Mandarin.
Jason Scott Lee is American and from Los Angeles.

As a big fan of the original, the trailer was better than I thought it would be. I'm perplexed by the decision to shoot this in English, but the trailer featured beautiful cinematography and dramatic fight scenes, which were the among the main appeals of the first movie. The CGI stuff at the end made me cringe, though, this should be strictly wire-fu. I also hope the soundtrack in the actual movie is more like the original.

Did AARP sponsor this film? Everyone looks so damn old in that trailer. If I want to see old people exercising, I just have to look at myself in the hall mirror at 12 noon every day (aahhh, the benefits of retirement). Don't they have young actors who can do martial arts anymore? If I want to see Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen do this kind of thing properly together, all I have to do is pull my DVD of BUTTERFLY AND SWORD off the shelf--without a single frame of CGI.

That CCR cover was terrible, the CGI was terrible, but the rest of it looks great. I'll watch it.
