I've said it before but I'll say it again. The only way this movie will be any good is if Paul Verhoeven were to direct it, especially since Showgirls is the most watchable bad movie ever made.

This is what Tom Arnold had to say about Charlie Hunnam dropping out of the role on the Stern show today:
Seems odd if that is true, since he's the lead on a fairly high profile TV show and was the lead in a summer blockbuster movie.
Tom says his Sons of Anarchy co-star Charlie Hunnam, who just backed out of the lead role in Fifty Shades of Grey, just got a little freaked out when he suddenly needed security after taking the high profile role. He just wants to live life as a regular guy.

Verhoeven or even Ellis might bring a subversive or satirical edge to this that the studio probably wouldn't want. I haven't read the books, but if I've learned anything from my tennis-with-a-wall arguments with Harry Potter fans, it's that they don't like much of anything from the book changed for any reason. I'm sure they'd want to play nice with the fanbase. I do agree that a film with this kind of sexual stuff could use a European director who's more comfortable with depicting that sort of thing (Someone like Verhoeven, Almodovar, a Tinto Brass- type, etc.).

I think it would need to be a young director who still remembers what it was like to be young and desperately horny. Verhoeven is too old and cynical to make a fluffy sex romp.

I hope everybody who is in to this book and/or movie has seen the movie Secretary. That's a great film that has already covered all of these bases. 50 Shades seems unnecessary.
