I'm not sure why the director even matters for this. It already has a built in audience of middle-age housewives (the same folks who helped make Twilight a hit). And it'll get a sizeable number of male viewers as well, who'll show up to get a look at [rising starlet]'s boobs.

All the big name directors that were after this, and this is who they chose...
I wonder if Kickass will be in it.

EXCLUSIVE: Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose directorial debut was 2009′s Nowhere Boy about the early life of John Lennon, has been secured to direct Fifty Shades Of Grey, the sizzling novel adaptation from Universal Pictures and Focus Features. Fellow Brit Kelly Marcel has written the script for the movie, based on EL James’ bestseller that follows the relationship between 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are producing alongside James. “Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life,” said De Luca. “EL James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed, and Sam is a natural fit.”
This is a hot job, and rumors have been flying about directors like Gus Van Sant, Susanne Bier and Joe Wright in the running, but Taylor-Johnson is a surprise choice. In addition to Nowhere Boy, which garnered her a pair of BAFTA nominations and an eventual husband in that film’s star Aaron Taylor-Johnson (of Kick-Ass fame), she had only directed the short film Love You More which was in Cannes in 2008. She also has ties to De Luca — the pair are in development on a film based on the Robert Goorlick novel A Reliable Wife which De Luca is also producing. Before landing the Nowhere Boy gig, Taylor-Johnson was a well-known photographer and visual artist whose work captured and explored issues of human sexuality.
Universal and Focus acquired rights to James’ trilogy in March 2012 after a heated bidding auction for film rights. Focus will market and distribute the film in partnership with Universal, whose co-chairman Donna Langley heavily pursued the book. The three books have been translated into 45 languages worldwide since its release and has sold over 70 million copies in e-book and print. During the bidding, I’d heard that 10 studio chiefs were involved in one of the wildest book-to-movie auctions in recent and distant memory.
Taylor-Johnson is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment and attorney David Weber.

It's pretty sad this badly written, masturbatory fan fiction fodder is one of the hottest properties currently in pre-production. I hope everyone involved gets genital warts and mouth ulcers.

I hope it simply bombs. That'd be hilarious and make crap like this a tougher sell in the future.

Wait, was this really based on Twilight Fanfic?
Edit: Yes, I just checked Wikipedia. Had no idea. Now I have even less interest in reading it. Not that I had any before...

Considering the level of tallent announced so far it pretty obviously isn't the hottest property in pre-production.

Twilight fan fiction? This intrigues me.
So what is the connection? I thought the book was about a businessman who kidnaps some girl as a sex slave. Is there vampire stuff in it?

Not if Bret Easton Ellis has any involvement in this movie (he's still co-producing this shitfest, right?). He's been against Matt Bomer being cast since day one because Matt Bomer is gay.
Same basic plot except it was Bella and the lead vampire from Twilight. It became super popular so the author changed the names, made the lead female a college student and the vampire into a billionaire and sold three books worth of this crap to the delight of horny housewives and dumbass 20-somethings everywhere.

You're possibly misinterpreting. Seems like they got people that the studio can control and people who really want to work to move up. Sounds like a studio film to me.

Or it could also be that the people that where "considered" where actually people who all turned it down. Honestly, this doesn't sound like all that hot a property despite the popularity of the books.

I dunno. Women have been a growing demographic in their genre films. Is it something that the directors are fighting for? Doubtful but I'm sure it's a property that has potential for big bank based on what the books popularity is. It's pretty damn big right?

Plenty of hit books have turned up average to middling box office when translated into movies. Just because the books are huge, doesn't mean the movie will be.
