This will probably star someone like Maggie Gyllenhaal and give me absolutely no reason to see it.

I think if more women saw the real Grey, they'd leave the book where it was.

Isnt the character suppose to be a boring plain jane girl? If so bubble boy's sister would be perfect. Mila and Emma look like they take and enjoy it up the ass, so they wouldnt fit what the whole story is about.

I think Gosling is a bit old to be Christian. Kunis would be interesting as Anastasia, but Emma Watson would be MAJOR headline maker.

I haven't read all of the book , as I found it mostly to be trash, but in terms of directors fit for the project, I think Paul Verhoeven needs to be dusted off and utilized. He may be old, but he knows how to make trash unlike anyone else.

I really don't see the benefit to any known actress to taking the role of Anastasia. Whoever does is going to end up being associated with it for the rest of her life.

Gus Van Sant Shot Sex Scene Starring Alex Pettyfer in Bid to Direct 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (Exclusive)

Two-time Oscar nominee Gus Van Sant has shot a steamy sex scene featuring Alex Pettyfer as Christian Grey in a bid to direct "Fifty Shades of Grey," the film version of the erotic bestseller, individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

The scene, insiders said, is when the ingénue Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to Grey.

Van Sant previously directed "Promised Land" and "Milk" for Focus Features, which has the rights to EL James' novel along with Universal Pictures. Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing.

Insiders stressed that Pettyfer was cast as Grey just for the tape, not the movie, though Universal just got into bed with the 23 year-old actor on its sexy remake of "Endless Love," which he is currently shooting in Atlanta. TheWrap was unable to confirm the identity of the actress cast at Steele, the impressionable young woman who falls for kinky billionaire Grey.

Universal and Focus have declined to comment on any list stories, long or short, though a Universal spokesperson said that the studio isn't out to directors or actors, nor have they commissioned any test reels. WME has also declined comment.

Van Sant has not settled on a follow-up film since wrapping "Promised Land," which makes him available to begin working on the project as soon as writer Kelly Marcel delivers a finished draft of the script.

Van Sant was not officially asked by the studio to shoot a test tape. But doing so may indicate how badly he wants the coveted assignment.

Universal and Focus spent at least $3 million in a bidding war to crack the whip on "Fifty Shades of Grey," and they'll certainly be expecting the pop culture phenomenon to be a hit, and a franchise for the studio. Van Sant has only directed one film to cross the domestic $100 million mark -- 1997's "Good Will Hunting" grossed $138 million in the U.S. -- and only one more to cross the domestic $50 million mark, as "Finding Forrester" grossed $51 million in 2000.

Van Sant has long been considered a director who confronts themes such as sex and sexuality head-on, from his debut film the "Mala Noche" to the hustlers in "My Own Private Idaho" to Nicole Kidman's provocative dance in "To Die For" to serving as the executive producer of Larry Clark's explicit "Kids."

Van Sant's candidacy confirms the producers' intentions to hire a high-class filmmaker to deliver a tasteful adaption of the steamy novel. It's possible the success of Steven Soderbergh's male stripper movie "Magic Mike" and its appeal to female audiences is why Van Sant chose to use Pettyfer in his test tape.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" sold to Universal and Focus in March 2012, just two months after WME-repped Van Sant did Focus a favor by stepping in late in the game to replace his "Good Will Hunting" star Matt Damon as the director of "Promised Land," which Focus released to generally strong reviews in December.

"Van Sant's candidacy confirms the producers' intentions to hire a high-class filmmaker to deliver a tasteful adaption of the steamy novel."

So they'll be diverging from the book, I take it.

I read the book. The woman looks incredibly hot, and guys hit on her all the time, but she believes that she's boring plain jane. She's graduating college but has never even been kissed. Before she meets Grey, she's so sexually unaware that masturbation had never even occurred to her.

But Maggie Gyllenhaal already did a similar story in a good move, The Secretary. There's no reason for her to do it again in a bad movie.

I think that is the plan. They don't want it to be just lonely women porn.

So the Breaking Dawn: Part 2 approach. Sounds like a good plan. But as has been mentioned before this was already done (and done very well) in The Secretary. No need for an inferior version based on a crappy (and I use the following term loosely) "novel".

re: Fifty Shades Of Grey (2014; d: Taylor-Johnson)

I wonder if this will be a hard R rated movie the likes of which has not been seen in a while, or if they might actually bite the bullet and make a main stream NC-17 movie? This already has a built in audience, non-adult kids have no business seeing it, so why not just go for it?

I've read some of the book and found it to be trash, so I don't see any reason to try and polish it. Pettyfer could work as Grey, and he is somewhat known, so they should get a complete unknown for the lead, and shouldn't have any problem. Most popular actresses would demand too much money for something like this.

I never had any intentions of reading the book, but I just found out that it started as Twilight fanfic, and then the author changed the names. Sounds like a real winner to me.

Which is why the Breaking Dawn: Part 2 approach is so apropos.

After the controversy he's courted with sexual content in his films previously, that actually sounds interesting. There is no way in hell he could make it R-rated, however. God, I wish someone would rerelease his Dutch stuff.

Seriously? I find it hard to believe people like that even exist in male fantasies anymore . I'm sheltered and naive and still find that far-fetched .

After watching Killer Joe, I'd like to see Juno Temple in this.

It's even more shocking that a woman wrote that trash and women are swearing by the book as if it's some exquisitely written romance novel.

Makes me wanna write porn under a female pseudonym and make a small fortune.

re: Fifty Shades Of Grey (2014; d: Taylor-Johnson)

Anna Karenina director Joe Wright has emerged as a front-runner in the Fifty Shades of Grey sweepstakes, according to multiple sources.

Wright has a long-standing relationship with Focus and Universal, which paid $5 million for movie rights to the steamy Fifty Shades book series and are partnering to bring the first novel to the big screen. The British director has made four films with Focus: Anna Karenina, Hanna, Atonement and Pride & Prejudice.

Sources caution that there is no deal in place, and Wright has not officially won the job. Universal and Wright's reps at CAA declined to comment.

If he is indeed the choice, Wright would keep the film's Brit streak intact. London native Kelly Marcel is adapting the screenplay of the sexually explicit best-seller by fellow Brit E.L. James.

The Fifty Shades gig has been one of the most high-profile open directing jobs in years given the popularity of James' sex-fueled trilogy. But Universal and Focus have always been set on hiring a helmer with art-house sensibilities, considering such names as Bennett Miller, Patty Jenkins and Gus Van Sant, who recently shot test scenes with actor Alex Pettyfer in a bid for the job. Wright's Atonement was nominated for a best picture Oscar. Furthermore, he is known for having great success with films featuring young female protagonists, as played by Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan.

No..this is not meant to be classy. This is trash.

This could mean Knightly is a contender for the lead, but she's got a scrawny body.

Only a director like Paul Verhoven could make this worth watching.
