Disagree. I thought the post-production work on the film was terrible and it became more distracting than anything else.

I think as it stands, the best "CGI sets," are that of NYC during the climax of The Avengers.

Zodiac had some good CGI sets

Re: How real did Rear Projection look?

Then and now the quality of rear screen for driving differed greatly. When done well it is barely detectable. It's still done today and has been perfected to the point where you can barely be noticed. Ronin, 12 Monkeys, Zodiac and Children of Men all have rear projected driving scenes that you probably would never notice.

Re: How real did Rear Projection look?

I still haven't seen Ronin. So I can't say shit about it.

And it's been a while w/ 12 Monkeys. But...where in Zodiac and Children of Men? Was it LITERALLY rear projection or cgi background?

Re: How real did Rear Projection look?

It was cgi background, the modern version of the technique.

Re: How real did Rear Projection look?

Rear projection just usually looks really washed out. But really, it's how it's integrated with other shots to help it be invisible (or realistic).

I mean for driving, if there's a shallow depth of field, then that's also a case where it should look good if all else goes well, since the projection is going to be out of focus, but we still sense movement. That's provided the car isn't weaving in and out but going straight at an even pace.

Cameron has always amazed me w/ how he's done it. Aliens has some damn fine work in there.

I think it comes from his days with Roger Corman and being forced to do low budget films.

Re: How real did Rear Projection look?

Has he ever talked a lot about that? I hear him mention it but I'd love to hear more about those times. See what molded him into the man he is now.

The special edition laserdisc had a featurette specifically about rear projection and its use in T2. There was one DVD edition that had all of that laserdisc's featurrettes.

It must be. I don't personally own it (the Ultimate Edition DVD), but I have a friend who did, and the menus looked exactly like what was on my laserdiscs.

Cool I'll have to take another look at that. The commentary was pretty good from what I remember, although Cameron did talk over the other guy a lot.

Was Connery ever in the USA for the movie? Because I really thought him at the stud farm was really Kentucky.

Movie magic fooled me!

That continuous shot in Superman: The Movie where Lois says goodnight to Superman and then walks to her door to let Clark in still looks really good to me.
