Maybe a different audience (though I think there's crossover with a family movie) but still box office competition. But not only Aquaman, but Bumblebee opens as well. That's a lot of competition for the nerd audience.

New Alita: Battle Angel Trailer Prepares for the Ultimate Cyborg Showdown

...The first teaser for Alita: Battle Angel arrived in December and gave us our first feel for this crazy flick, which is a blend of CGI and live-action that, for whatever reason, just feels very strange to look at. Having the villain from Deadpool as a bad guy, using only his head and having the rest of him as a crazy CGI robot, is just one example. Not to mention the titular character's crazy eye situation. This is a massive movie and that means it's also an expensive movie. Easily the biggest that Robert Rodriguez has ever handled. But is this movie already doomed before it even opens?

For one, there just doesn't seem to be much hype for this thing. Perhaps this new trailer will help matters a bit, but this thing reportedly comes with a $200 million budget. The kind of money Alita: Battle Angel has to make in order to become profitable is monster, gigantic blockbuster numbers. No matter how good (or bad) the movie turns out, it's going to be tough to make that kind of dough. This is starting to smell a bit like Jupiter Ascending or Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets...

I'm an anime fan and I have the original Battle Angel manga and two VHS tapes of the anime, one dubbed and one subbed. And I'm way more interested in BUMBLEBEE than this film.

I know nothing about the anime. Just that Cameron has had this on his list for nearly 20 years. Looking forward to it.

I highly doubt Cameron had any heavy hand in this.

I assume he does. He doesn’t produce much. And he’s been talking about directing it himself for nearly 20 years.

As I understand it, this is his project and Rodriguez is just a director he trusted with the project since Cameron is busy with bringing us Avatar in 8D or something.

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

Cameron gave him a script that Rodriguez had to cut down to 130 pages. Also, the whole reason for the stupidly big eyes is because that's what Cameron felt was important to this adaptation (never mind that she's supposed to look normal and it's just a stylistic choice by the author).

I think I posted this before but here's the phone interview with Rodriguez where he says this:

I think he did. Think George Lucas with TESB & ROTJ, even though he wasn't the director, I'm sure he had final say on everything.

Fox just made a slew of release date changes. Instead of opening Alita: Battle Angel on Dec. 21, she now goes on Feb. 14, 2019.

That's actually good for Alita. Well, not good in the sense that they didn't have more confidence in it, but it was going up against a ton of competition and would've gotten buried.

This is on the precipice of becoming a "Netflix Original".

As opposed to going up against Bumblebee, Aquaman, Mortal Engines, Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, Mary Poppins Returns and Holmes & Watson in mid-December.

Instead it's basically just going up against Happy Death Day 2U and The LEGO Movie 2 in Feb. Gives it a slightly better chance. Slightly.

Plus it's being released on Valentine's Day for us lonely nerds... Though I'd probably see Happy Death Day 2U first.

More time to remove the cgi eyes.

I'm betting it'll place third behind these two.

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

X-Men has had significant theatrical success, so that won't happen with these two. Alita is by Rodriguez, who's success lies within Sin City, and not much else. Unless they start promoting it as all things Cameron, I can see this hitting Netflix in time for the holidays of this year - or let it die out in February.

Well, he's had a few film series. El Mariachi (3 films), Spy Kids (4 films), Sin City (2 films), Machette (2 films, 3rd in the works..).

The Spy Kids films were his most commercially successful:

This is the second time it's been pushed back. Was originally slated for 7/20/18.

That’s the joke. The West image gets used all the time. He updated it.

They must have gotten some feedback from pre-screeners.

Only a few of those films were in the excellent category.

At one point RR seemed to be headed to greatness.
But he lost his mojo...maybe it was his divorce...or something else.
I don't really know.
