Re: Battle Angel

I guess it is called Alita: Battle Angel now?

Anyway Robert Rodriguez is directing this...

via Deadline:

Fans of the graphic novel have salivated over the prospect of Cameron directing the film, but he’s just too busy with three sequels to Avatar going back to back-to-back. So he’ll entrust it to Rodriguez, who launched the El Mariachi, Spy Kids, Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn franchises. He also launched the El Rey network.

Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love.

Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel,Cameron said in a statement. He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.

Added Robert Rodriguez: “Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films. Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades.

Cameron and Landau, who will produce for Fox under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner, are in pre-production on the Avatar sequels.
*groan* I dunno about this. Seems like Cameron will still produce this but still... I would hope Rodriguez can grow as a filmmaker again. Though maybe he can not isolate himself if he's given some grand amount of money that Fox gives Cameron since he's still involved.

Well, Gunnm (the source property) only had one anime adaption and not even a TV series. And the original manga series basically ended, then the author worked on some other stuff and picked Gunnm back up as Last Order, and it's now completely different (there is no way Cameron is adapting anything from Last Order). I'm surprised this has enough resonance with Western audiences that they're even going with the 'Alita' name.

Changing Cameron for Robert "Sharkboy and Lava Girl" Rodriguez? Fuck that!

Of course Rodriguez could minimize the budget by directing, producing, editing, creating the music, and providing craft services for it.

Probably Jon Landau, Cameron's producer on Titanic and Avatar.

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

Robert Rodriguez has made 3 good movies (Desperado, From Dusk Til Dawn and Sin City), one average movie (Machete) and the rest has been utter, utter garbage. The only reason this guy gets to make movies so much is the fact he can do them cheap. His career started off promising, but he had gone on to show no real talent for directing and a great talent in lazy movies that use shitty CGI. To go from James Cameron who is a true legend in cinema and is one of a handful of people in history who has actually taken the whole medium forward due to his own intelligence and perseverance, to a cheap and lazy director who has a reputation for producing crap. Well, thats me not interested at all. This movie now has waste of time written all over it.

It all depends on how much Cameron overseas this project. Is Cameron going to let RR use his facilities and equipment or is Cameron going to let RR use Troublemaker Studios? The PR release almost like it was RR coming aboard in a director's capacity and only that - director for hire. It's still JC producing and co-writing, right?

Mariachi was a fine small movie, but nothing great imo. I remember going to see the Faculty at the cinema and it was alright. But seeing it again in recent years I found it boring and crappy. Seeing fat ginger Harry Knowles in it shows what level of crap it went to.

Easily the best thing he's ever given to us. Also possibly Salma Hayek.

PLANET TERROR is the only Rodriguez-directed effort that I have any affection for.

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

I always wanted to see Battle Angel, that animated movie they did, as a kid. the promos flashing that film and others on VHS tapes I'd buy or rent always attracted to see it. Never read the comics either. Either actually good?

I find it funny that I discovered a lot of stuff via the promo commercials they'd put on those tapes.

If RR gave us something else with Salma Hayek naked then i would be more positive for the direction of his career. Or Carla Gugino naked. Or Salma Hayek AND Carla Gugino naked and doing naughty things to one another. If he directed something along those lines then i would put him up there with Welles and Scorsese.

Gugino and Hayek. Nekkid. *thinks about it*

Seriously though... RR really needs to grow as a director. I just fear what this film will bring. I don't trust him anymore. If Cameron is there actively producing... I might be more comfortable w/ this.
