Badlands 5/5
Days of Heaven 5/5
The Thin Red Line 5/5
The New World 5/5
The Tree of Life 4/5
To The Wonder 3/5
Hopefully the downward trend doesn't continue. I'm still excited to see this. Crazy to think Malick has 3 seperate films in the can right now.

Badlands 5/5 and one of my favorite films of all time.
Days Of Heaven 3/5
The Thin Red Line 4/5
The New World 3/5
The Tree Of Life and To The Wonder are coma inducing boring.
Hopefully Knight Of Cups is better. If not I will just accept that Malick isn't for me and avoid all future films by him. Kind of like I should do with Nolan.

I take it Malick is ultra picky when it comes to editing, hence why it takes so long from shoot til the day it comes out. As Tree of Life was shot in 2008, didn't premiere til 2011

Does he shoot massive amounts of footage and tons of takes like Kubrick and wind up with tons of material to edit, or is he just picky about it? It does sound like the Kubrick kind of thing where he spends a ton of time, sometimes several years, tinkering with projects. He seems to prefer shooting film, shame he's so reclusive, the Kodak alliance could use him .

He shoots a great quantity of film, but he is different from Kubrick. Kubrick would obsessively shoot take after take of a scripted scene waiting for "something", some magic or accident to happen. Malick barely uses the script, having it serve as a suggestion of what he might film and then lets the camera run almost constantly. I've heard actors say they often didn't know a camera was running and they were surprised to see a particular moment in the final cut. Sometimes you can see it. There's a moment in the New World where Pocahontas and Batman trip and fall and laugh at their clumsiness. Everything about it appears to be truly a mistake. Malick is looking for honest moments. He doesn't much care about motivation or being in character or continuity.

"The New World" was okay, but it's been downhill since then. Can't wait for the ultra-pretentious monologues that mean absolutely nothing. Love of all loves, why did you leave me when I need you most?
Where were you then??

The Life of Trees
I love the Tree of Life, but I can laugh at that. Very well done. Malick's style is easy to mimic and parody. I made a film of my daughter at the beach at sunset in about 20 minutes and it's a dead ringer for Malick in an amateurish way. But there's something to what he brings to it, the way that he does it, that can't be imitated.

Rick is a slave to the Hollywood system. He is addicted to success but simultaneously despairs at the emptiness of his life.
He is at home in a world of illusions but seeks real life. Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation.
But the Knight of Cups is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer.
In Terrence Malick's seventh film a gliding camera once again accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning.
Once again a voiceover is laid over images which also seek their own authenticity. And once again Malick seems to put the world out of joint.
His symphonic flow of images contrasts cold, functional architecture with the ageless beauty of nature.
Rick's internal monologue coalesces with the voices of the women who cross his path, women who represent different principles in life:
while one lives in the real world, the other embodies beauty and sensuality. Which path will Rick choose?
In the city of angels and the desert that surrounds it, will he find his own way?

The press screening in Berlin begins in exactly 40 minutes, public screening six hours later. I'll be rounding up and posting twitter reactions here.

For EddieMoney :
Come, spirit, help us sing the story of our land. You are our mother. We, your field of corn. We rise from out of the soul of you.
Mother, why can I not feel as I should... must? Once false, I must not be again. Take out the thorn.
He is like a tree. He shelters me. I lie in his shade.

Well, numerous cameos in the movie have been confirmed from those who've seen it.. Never thought i'd ever see
in a Terrence Malick film.

Terrence Malick does have a reputation for being a major ass hound. Why do you think he took so long between making Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, he was on a 20 year global ass pilgrimage.
