Re: Knight of Cups (2014) - D: Malick S: Bale, Portman, Blanchett

"I shot one day on KNIGHT OF CUPS, and I had a 17-page monologue. Christian Bale, who I was playing opposite who had a lot of lines that would lead me into the next three pages, he hadn't seen his pages. So when we started shooting, he'd just walk off, and I'd be chasing him saying all this stuff, when he was actually the one who was supposed to be interested, and that's the reason that I was talking.

And then into page nine of my monologue, I'd turn around and see Terry like a 150 yards away shooting some pink dog running around. It was indeed a very interesting experience. I have no idea what that film is."

Jesus. Had no idea that Malick's stuff was as frustrating to make as it is to watch.

I hope the title pays off in the movie, because Knight of Cups sounds like a dumb drinking game. But per usual, it looks beautiful.

Wow. Seems like Malick is changing it up w/ this one. A little bit.

Yeah. That title just doesn't sound appealing.

Yeah, except for the Sean Penn bits of Tree of Life, has he ever had a movie set in present day? It's a little jarring to see all the Hollywood hedonistic stuff in a Malick movie.

To The Wonder looks very present-day... even though it's based on how Malick met his current wife decades ago.

As someone who likes his first 3 films, I hope this is good. Have not seen To The Wonder but was disappointed by Tree of Life and The New World.

The trailer tells me absolutely nothing about what this movie is about. It's just a bunch of flashy/artsy cinematography and pretentious dialogue. Oh, just like most Malick films.

The Knight of Cups is a Tarot card. According to wikipedia:

"The Knight of Cups is a person who is a bringer of ideas, opportunities and offers. He is constantly bored, and in constant need of stimulation, but also artistic and refined. He represents a person who is amiable, intelligent, and full of high principles, but a dreamer who can be easily persuaded or discouraged.

Reversed, the card represents unreliability and recklessness. It indicates fraud, false promises and trickery. It represents a person who has trouble discerning when and where the truth ends and lies begin."

Yeah, getting a little bored with Malick. I think I liked him better when he made movies every 10 years or so

Relative to his complete inactivity for 20 years, Malick has been fairly busy for the last few.

well he is 71

Also it would be amusing if Imogen Poots gets cut out of the final product, cause you know, just being on the cast list for a Malick movie does not mean you will be in the final film

Based on the trailer and your definition of what Knight of Cups means I can say with almost complete certainty that this is a very autobiographical film about Malick's experiences behind the scenes of film making, film-deal brokering, and the excesses of Hollywood, either during his active period in the 70's or more likely his inactive period in the 80's and 90's when he was ghostwriting re-writes and being courted by a few different producers to get him to "come back" to film making.

Similar to how Tree of Life is about his childhood and his brother's suicide and To The Wonder is about his French wife, their difficult relationship in America, and his infidelity which led him to his current wife.

There was a fascinating Vanity Fair article written about him on the eve of Thin Red Line coming out. Not only is it very good, but it filled in a lot of then unknown biographical detail about the man which (miraculously) almost ALL ended up being the subject of these autobiographical films.

Sean Penn had most of his part cut out of The Tree of Life. He's only in the film for about 10-15 minutes.

"I've seen cuts that were the first or second drafts of the movie. There were amazing things: much more of the children and Jessica and Brad.
And you could almost make a whole other movie about Sean. There's another side to his story. It's almost unexplored in the film."

- Emmanuel Lubezki

Re: Knight of Cups (2014) - D: Malick S: Bale, Portman, Blanchett

official synopsis courtesy of ropeofsilicon

"Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.

Rick's (Christian Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy.

The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?"

So the character in the film is like the audience?
