How? As an adaptation it's weak. As a film in general it's so mediocre. It could have had so much promise.

Lincoln

I'm not a huge fan of "serious" Spielberg. I think he's far better as a filmmaker when he's making popcorn flicks. However, I thought Lincoln was pretty damn good. Day Lewis was amazing and the script was just tight enough to not allow too many Spielbergisms. Definitely the best surprise of the past year.

Taste of Cherry
Cléo from 5 to 7
Salesman
Ballad of a Soldier
Ratcatcher
A woman is a a woman
Winter Light
3 Women
Touchez pas au grisbi
49th Parallel
Make way for tomorrow
Fish Tank
Cul-de-sac

21 Jump Street. I hate dumb comedies, especially stoner comedies. But this one was pretty hilarious.

Enchanted is a good one. I thought it would be awful based on the trailers, but Adam Tyner's glowing review convinced me to check it out, and he was right.

Re: Movies you're surprised you liked?

Enchanted?! I went in first day, first show knowing it would be the shit. Saw it alone, partially due to nobody else being interested. Loved it, and of course I liked Amy Adams after that.

Dredd is the one from last year that I thought I was boarding a sinking ship, but now I am looking forward to receiving the 3D BD tomorrow.

John Carter to a lesser degree but I'm not buying that anytime soon.

Dredd

Total Recall (2012)

John Carter

Sparkle...Actually I loved the movie. One of my biggest surprises from 2012. I like music themed period movies and thought it was really well done. Jordin Sparks and Carmen Ejogo were great.

Suck - GREAT vampire-rock n roll-comedy-musical with Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Alex Lifeson, Alice Cooper, etc... It's not just a clever name!

Sucker Punch (Director's Cut) - hated the theatrical version. Loved the Blu-ray. Go figure.

Re: Movies you're surprised you liked?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs- the name alone was a turn off and I generally try to see all animation. Didn't catch it until it was on cable. Loved it and found it to be quite clever.

As others have stated, John Carter. Hated every trailer I saw. Greatly enjoyed the movie.

Re: Movies you're surprised you liked?

Total Recall 2012- more surprised that I didn't despise it, I found it enjoyable but not the greatest film ever.

Lockout- this movie, on the other hand, is possibly the greatest film ever, and may take the mantle next to Army of Darkness for hilariously fun badness.

Re: Movies you're surprised you liked?

Waitress - I thought I'd be too manly to like this. Turned out to be a quirky comedy-drama that reeled me in.

Before Sunrise - I'd dismissed this for years as a disposable date movie. When I finally saw it, it reminded me that you can still make a perfect love story without pandering to audiences.

Lilo & Stitch - I was dragged to watch this by my ex. I was going to take a nap, but when the opening came up where Lilo insisted on feeding a sandwich to Pudge the fish who controls the weather, I perked up to the oddball humor. Didn't expect that from the generally mainstream Disney.

Sometimes terribly low expectations can get you to enjoy a movie. Even if said movie is indeed bad, if it's not that bad, it might come off as ok. This is the very reason I was able to have fun with Carpenter's Children of the Damned and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The Words - I don't like Bradley Cooper but surprisingly I really enjoyed this movie. I also liked Dredd and John Carter.

Re: Movies you're surprised you liked?

Death Proof - I despised every other Tarantino movie I'd seen, so was quite surprised that I wound up loving this one.

Idle Hands - looked like an annoying joke via the previews. A friend insisted on showing it to me years later, and I thought it was a blast.

I like the directors cut too. Never saw the theatrical. I didn't hear a single good thing about the movie but I had nothing else to do one night so I watched it. I was surprised just how much I enjoyed it.

This is the first movie I thought of. The previews looked terrible but I heard good word of mouth so I checked it out. I loved it. Lots of funny stuff and high rewatchability.
