Re: Film Class ...what would you show?

this is just a general, what would you show to a class out of all the movies ever that would show filmmaking at its finest...it isn't for me specifically.

I kind of have to agree too. Nothing shows what you should do like seeing what you shouldn't.

Ocean's 13. Then have an open debate about what kind of movie the students would have made with that cast.

Revised list (I took out the ones that are either superfluous or should wait till another semester).

But I would add at least one Hollywood western, something by Ford or Hawks--my preferences would be FORT APACHE and THE SEARCHERS. And at least one film noir (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, maybe?). And one black-and-white social drama along the lines of something by Kazan: ON THE WATERFRONT or A FACE IN THE CROWD. And maybe DR. STRANGELOVE.

You took out almost anything vaugely current!

But I would add at least one Hollywood western, something by Ford or Hawks--my preferences would be FORT APACHE and THE SEARCHERS.
I picked "The Man who Shot Liberty Valance", I'll take "Red River" as a back up. "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is sort of a western as well. Maybe "The Wild Bunch"?

And at least one film noir (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, maybe?).
I thought about this, The Third Man is noir, but British. I'd take "Chinatown" or maybe "The Maltese Falcon".

And one black-and-white social drama along the lines of something by Kazan: ON THE WATERFRONT or A FACE IN THE CROWD. And maybe DR. STRANGELOVE.
Maybe "The Best Years of our Lives"?

I already had a Kubrick on there, I was going to pick 2001, but went with Clockwork Orange.
