Overlord (2018)

Could have been a nice WWII flick if they left out battle with the silly supernatural forces. Felt like a live action Wolfenstein film. 2/5

Frozen Ground (2013)

Stars John Cusack as Anchorage serial killer Robert Hansen and Nicolas Cage as a police sergeant who solved the case with the aid of profiling. Hansen, a baker who confessed to abducting and murdering 17 sex-trade workers 1971-83 and is suspected of more, was sentenced to life plus 461 years. Nice performance by Vanessa Hudgens as Cindy Paulson, the victim who escaped, but otherwise a run-of-the-mill crime drama imo.

Machete (2010)

Padre to Machete: "I absolve you of all your sins. Now get the fuck out!" Someone I occasionally traded with on another site loved this film but since he was into slasher films I had no interest in this one. Watched with the audience reaction track activated and laughed more often while viewing this "Action Thriller" than I sometimes do while watching films classified as comedies.

Bumblebee (2018)

As to be expected, this film was light on Plot but still an enjoyable way to spend 2-hours.

The opening scene on Cybertron was awesome. Can I get more of that?

IDK, that opening scene looked like a video game. Not sure I'd want to watch any more than a few minutes.

The Core (2003) — Certainly dumb and doesn't make a whole lot of sense but did like the ensemble cast and was fairly entertained even with the laughably dated visual effects. 3.0/5

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Vice - Watched this twice. Generally a big fan of Adam McKay, but I was a bit disappointed in this, just like I was with The Big Short (even though I love the Micheal Lewis book it was based on). Don't get me wrong, the acting was superb throughout, with Bale, Rockwell, Adams, Carell, Perry, etc. all doing admirable jobs...I just thought it wasn't that compelling. The script probably could've been tighter. I grew bored probably a half-hour into the movie...Still happy I purchased it, and maybe my viewpoint will change in a couple of years when I watch it again, but for now I say it was overrated...

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

It felt more like a comedy than a drama but I enjoyed it and great acting by both leads.

I could see maybe why Spike Lee was upset but this was not as bad as Driving Miss Daisy.

I would not mind watching it again someday and maybe if it drops to $10 or less I might be tempted to own this.

Before I Go To Sleep (2014)

A woman (Nicole Kidman) who awakens every day not remembering her past tries to piece together her former life with the help of her husband and her therapist. Entertaining but I suspect many who have watched this have correctly anticipated what the artwork calls "a shocking twist ending you will never see coming".

Morlang (2001)

Debut feature-length film by Dutch writer & director Tjebbo Penning. A middle-aged art photographer who appears to have successfully moved on after the suicide of his first wife begins to be haunted by the past. A drama about ego, love, and betrayal that held my attention.

A Black and White movie from 1995.

Walken does not appear until maybe 48 minutes into the movie and maybe for one scene only.

I wonder how Lili Taylor got all these big roles in the 90's when she was not that attractive or the most gifted actress.

Braid (2019)

Beautiful Cinematography & Set-Pieces as well as a fantastic performance by Madeline Brewer.

Overall vibe feels like Thoroughbreds (2017) on (literally) acid.

It doesn't always work but when it does, it is delightfully bizarre.

Looking forward to what Director/Writer Mitzi Peirone comes up with next.

Have not watched it in a while, but I remember liking it.

I believe it's because when compared to her "prettier" counterparts of that era, she was a better actress who wasn't afraid of going back and forth between mainstream and indie films.

I agree with Inri222 that beauty shouldn't be a criteria for casting. Hollywood has an obsession with cute actors/actresses (with Image in general, really) and will often make appaling choices just because such or such star is good looking. So you get pathetically made-up, eternally young 50-60 years old actresses with the same face as when they were 30 just because some have a problem seing beauty beyond looks. An actress like Olivia Colman (Oscar for The Favourite) would never have gotten a role in a series like Broadchurch in the US. Sad really, how many talented people can't get roles because they don't fit the jock or prom queen look!

Babylon A.D. (2008)

Mathieu Kassovitz should have stayed in France. He tried his hand at a couple Hollywood bluckbusters (co-prods really) and they were just not good. This here has a script which could fit on a napkin. Talk about style over content.

L'empereur de Paris (2019)

Had tickets for the local premiere. Stylish and interesting setting (Napoleon-era Paris, 1803 or thereabouts) but a bit thin scriptwise. Story of escaped convict (wrongfully says he) Vidocq who ends up helping the police catch other criminals. Worth it for the ambiance more than the story itself.

I agree. Melissa Leo might be super attractive but she could be the American older equivalent of Olivia Colman

It was not horrible but not good either. Rob Lowe was the only bright spot in the movie.

This was pretty good. Sad that a lot of kids could be in this situation.

Two former American Idol contestants in this movie but don't let that sway you away. from watching

Anthony Mackie looked like James Harden

Rose Byrne in blackface?

Marisa Tomei the only star in the movie and wonder why she did it?

Van Jones makes a cameo

Agree. Wonder if that obsession might be due to Hollywood's drive for profitability. Youth, attractiveness, and image may be more important to their target audiences than talent and substance. Unfortunately that also seems to carry into other areas of life, such as the LPC's selection of votre voisin et bon ami JT as leader instead of someone with talent and substance 😉
