The Ten Commandments- Cecil B. Demille's VistaVision 35mm spectacular, an endless biblical epic about Moses leading the Egyptians out of Exodus. A study in excess to make Peter Jackson look like a minimalist, it's a an unbelievably long, bombastic, silly, but often entertaining blend of soap opera romance, old-style Hollywood spectacle, sword-and-sandle battles, dated special effects, and colorful kitsch. It's hugely iconic scenes achieve a certain pop grandeur, but disappointingly, DeMille is no David Lean. The many matte paintings stick out, and the whole film is disappointingly stiff and dull, shot mostly in static long takes with Demille's usually stationary camera. Though seeing it on the big screen would be a cool opportunity, but in spite of the 6K restoration credits, the DCP shown by my local AMC wasn't a dazzler (presumably compressed or something) and the film's sluggish pacing didn't help matters. A classic to some, and probably plays much better on the small screen when you can pause it to get up and get food and go to the bathroom, but time hasn't been kind to it. Still, it's a cultural touchstone, and there's a certain fun to be had. Let my people go!

Gremlins
To this day I don't understand the whole "don't feed them after midnight" rule. When are Mogwai supposed to eat? It is always after midnight. Also what time zone are we going by?

2 Guns- Tony Scott and Shane Black 90s-style buddy comedy with modern gloss. Fun, but forgettable, way too convoluted, and derivative. Washington and Walberg have fun as the leads, who's rapport is frankly more interesting than the many action sequences, most of them without much kick. Bill Paxton is still a scene-stealer as a terrific villain. Too mainstream, casting its net way too wide in desperation to please everyone. Lots of eye-candy for both genders as well as special effects, action, and jokes. Disposable fun
The Fourth Man- Wild European satire from Paul Verhoeven's pre-Hollywood period, an outrageous blast of constant symbolism, nudity, shocking blasphemy, and frequent explicitness, all handled matter-of-factly. The tale of a homosexual Catholic pulp writer who falls under the sway of a temptress whom he believes is evil incarnate. Or is he just insane? Whether you're willing to go with the film's wildly over-the-top style and hilariously lurid plot will determine how receptive you are to it, but it's certainly audacious and bold and an obvious spiritual predecessor to Basic Instinct. Very stylishly shot on a low budget, with a fun, equally frank commentary from Verhoeven himself, who's English remains fractured after all of these years. Managed to secure this from some distance via an inter-library loan, will someone please re-release these with the commentaries?! The OOP prices are obscene, and the library doesn't have them all.

Big Bad Wolves - QT's favorite flick of last year and it did not disappoint! It's a dark comedy filled with brutal violence and an almost Brothers Grimm feel to it. It was great.

Moonrise Kingdom - 2/5
In the summer of 1965 the daughter of 2 attorneys and an orphan khaki scout fall in love and decide to run away together. When the word gets out, they are pursued by the girl's parents, the local sheriff and the scout leader. Beautiful visuals accompanied by shallow substance. I preferred the parts with the adults over the ones with the children. Best thing about this one is Edward Norton.

Lord of Illusions
A seemingly forgotten horror-noir gem from the 90s. Lots of blood. Bonus: Famke Janssen looks stunning in this.

Locke - 9/10.
Tom Hardy is the only star visible on this road trip with a difference which charts his 85-minute journey to an unmissable appointment in real time.
Excellent performance - and what is essentially a theatrical piece works superbly well as a low-budget superbly-executed film.

The Legend of Hercules - mediocre film but totally watchable. The Blu-ray has demo worthy sound.
Mobius - A very cool "Notorious-esque" take on the spy thriller starring Jean Dujardin, Cecile de France, and Tim Roth. Shot in Monaco and a few other countries - it was great!

Benny's Video - 4.5/5
A middle-class teenager into violent films becomes obsessed with a video showing the death of a pig. One day his obsession becomes a reality and there is no turning back. Another amazing and disturbing film from Michael Haneke that shows the media's mind-numbing effect on people.

The Drums of Jeopardy (1931)
Pretty wild revenge thriller with constant action and a demented out of control performance from Warner Oland. Innovative twists relieve any chance of boredom and I found it a great way to spend 65 minutes.

Tracks - 9/10.
I think I've had my fill of actioners and the like of late, so have really enjoyed seeing something a little different which may in part account for the relatively high score sfor my last two cinema visits.
Tracks is a representation of Robyn Davidson's 1977 1700 mile walk (with camels that she had personally trained) from Australia's Alice Springs to the ocean.
Any fan of the likes of Walkabout should find plenty to enjoy.
Although I believe that some elements have been slightly adapted, Davidson herself has said that she is very happy with the end result.
