Re: Last movie you watched

Taken- Many action fans have really taken (ahem) this Luc Besson violence-fest, but I found its xenophobic violence dull and outdated. At least some of Besson's other vehicles had some gonzo Hong Kong chops to lighten them up. This tale of an ultra-badass who goes Europe to kill a series of evil sex traffickers who've kidnapped his virginal daughter ("The French are amazing in bed!") would play like a DTV vehicle if it weren't for the higher production values and Liam Neeson's excellent acting and steely presence, but that's not enough to elevate it. I just thought once we got out of the 90s, we were done with this kind of thing. And for a Frenchman, Besson doesn't do the tourist board any favors. Maybe I finally am growing up .

Unknown- Joel Silver, king of action flicks from the golden age, produces another Liam Neeson action vehicle from director Jaume Collet-Serra. It's twisty plot based upon a novel feels like a pulp paperback airplane reader, but that's not a terrible thing. Serra's direction is very glossy and brisk, and there's a certain fun in watching the admittedly nonsensical plot unfold as the twists and turns a revealed amid the occasional shootouts, care chases, and watching Liam Neeson beat everybody up.

Non-Stop- A rehash of the above with Neeson, Serra, and Silver, Neeson as air marshal solving a sort of locked room mystery up in the clouds. Frankly more interesting doing the Agatha Christie shtick than when it goes into action fireworks in its third act. Though it isn't based on a novel, this too feels very much like a trashy paperback with a few plot twists. Decent fun while it lasts, though it doesn't hold up to a lot scrutiny. Shot on Fuji 35mm though. Yay! Celluloid! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Hidden In The Woods (2012)

Chileans know how to keep it sleazy. It's an Exploitation film at its core, but mashes in a lot of other genres as well. When it's being low-brow it succeeds but fails when it tries anything else.

Hate Crime (2013)

Final act drags the film down, but its a solid entry into the Home Invasion/Exploitation genre. It's sleazy for most of its short 71 minute run time, but as mentioned, it runs out of things to do in the final act.

Tonight will be my third night trying to get through The Raid 2. I keep falling asleep, even though the movie is awesome as fuck.

The Coast Guard - 4/5

A South Korean soldier is assigned to patrol the coast line. His duty is to prevent North Korean spies from infiltrating the South by killing them on the spot. One night he accidentally kills a drunk man who is having sex with a woman on the coast. This causes him to have a mental breakdown that will have tragic consequences. Good film about the price people pay in order to feel secure and eventually becoming their own worst enemies .

it was really good - I thought both Emmanuelle Seigner, Mathieu Amalric were excellent - Matthieu was really channeling the look of a younger Polanski. Desplat's music score was integrated to sublime beautiful effect. Given the source was a play the script and the interaction of the two was fascinating to watch.

'Joy Ride 3' - m'eh....thought the first was decent (Paul Walker & Steve Zahn), but as is with these movies when they make the sequels and put no name actors in, it really shows even more.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

I thought this was better than the first film, though still littered with problems. So happy I got to see how the 'other half' purges

Enemy - 4.5/5

A history professor becomes obsessed with tracking down a man he sees in a movie that looks identically like him. Once he finds this "double" his life takes a strange turn as he starts to realize things about himself. Intelligent surreal psychological thriller about what humans can be capable of when holding on to their individuality.

Upstream Color.

I haven't watched this since I first got the Blu-ray. I'm glad I finally got around to it again. It's a strange beast, but beautiful and thought-provoking. I still prefer Primer, but it's a shame that Carruth hasn't been able to make more movies. He's the kind of director that needs someone trusting enough to just throw money at him so he can make whatever he wants.

Re: Last movie you watched

I'm Not Scared - Even by "child logic" standards, the lead characters actions when he discovers a boy chained up in a hole in the ground seem questionable. I mean, not even a "How the hell did you end up down here?"

Beautiful cinematography (the wheat field is almost a character itself), but the ending was too conventional for an otherwise unconventional movie.

The Purge: Anarchy Premiere - 4/5 - I loved the
Spoiler:
mazed scene. Everyone is rooting at Frank Grillo everytime he shot them down one by one. The girl and her mother was freaking annoying
. Overall, I enjoyed this film better than the first.

Under The Skin (2013)

Shot beautifully with great visual moments strewn about. As a film overall it missed the mark with me personally.

Re: Last movie you watched

This movie begins with Perry Mason sleeping off a drunk behind his desk. Too bad we never got to see Raymond Burr doing that on the TV show.

Live Feed (2006)

Enjoyed this more the 2nd time around. Loved the grimy/sketchy setting and the copious amounts of gore.
