Piece by Piece Universal Blu-Ray
Pharrell Williams. Directed by Morgan Neville. 2024
An autobiography where Pharrell Williams shows his imaginative and creative process using Lego, as he constructs Lego models representing his artistic development. Each build reflects a different creative milestone.

It's certainly a clever idea to tell your life story in the style of the LEGO movies, though I found it a bit of a head-scratcher when I'd see the trailers, -it feels like you're pitching to two different audiences. Now that I've had a chance to watch it (Free! from The County Library), I've got to say it's visually dazzling, but I zoned out on the story being told. It's a bit like watching a TV show while you're looking at the internet on your phone.

The Mist - I was listening to an episode of The Kingcast podcast where they talked about this movie, so I felt like watching it again. It's a pretty solid adaptation by Frank Darabont, who, of course, directed two other movies based on Stephen King stories: The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. The cast is excellent, and includes a few future cast members of The Walking Dead, another Darabont project. I remember reading the short story in one of King's anthologies many, many years before this movie was made, and it was one of my favorites. The conclusion of the story was changed for the movie, and I am still surprised Darabont went with such a dark ending. It's definitely impactful, though, and rings true with King's overall style, which often doesn't include happy endings.

Watchmen Chapter 2 Warner Bros Blu-Ray
Directed by Brandon Vietti. 2024
In an alternate 1985 America, a group of retired superheroes investigate a conspiracy after one of their own is murdered.

"Chapter 2" continues DC's terrific adaptation of the classic graphic novel. This version, however, restores the "not-so-alien creature" to the finale that was left out of Zack Snyder's Live Action film. Once again, CGI is used to create an excellent approximation of Dave Gibbons' art, bringing it to dimensional life. However, the film greatly improves on the limited four-color pallet of the original comics and that makes "Watchmen" all the more dynamic. The film is so on the money that it further diminishes the series of adaptations that preceded it, which generally had dull animation that rarely evoked the original artist. "Chapter 1" is currently available on Max.

"A family gathers on Christmas Eve for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. As the night wears on and tensions arise, one of the teenagers sneaks out with her friends to claim the wintry suburb for her own."

It had a Spielberg and Scorsese kid or some people related to them I think but most of the cast i hardly knew except Michael Cera and Elsie Fisher though Gregg Turkington looked familiar but could not put the name to the face.

It was ok but kind of slow and I thought Michael Cera would have more scenes since he was the reason I checked it out in the first place,

Animal Kingdom Amazon Prime
Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton. Directed by David Michod. 2010
After his mother dies of a heroin overdose, J Cody goes to live with his grandmother "Smurf" and his uncles, who are deeply involved in criminal activity.

I was a fan of the TNT series "Animal Kingdom", at least until Ellen Barkin left in the last season. I had watched the original Australian film years before but barely remembered it. Watching it again, I can see why, though that's not entirely meant as a slight. It's a good film for the most part. The first two acts are very low-key and matter of fact, and I couldn't help wishing it had a little more electricity. It has a great cast, -Jacki Weaver, Joel Edgerton, Sullivan Stapleton, Guy Pearce. The protagonist, though, was a new young actor, James Frecheville, and he's playing "J" as a slightly dim and not very conversant teen, and while he's believable, he just gets swallowed up by the rest of the cast. Thankfully the Third Act becomes much more Dramatic with "Smurf" becoming a full-on "monster" willing to resort to murder and manipulation as the Police close in.

Goodfellas Warner Bros 4K
Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1990
The life and times of Henry Hill, who grew up idolizing the wiseguys in his neighborhood and eventually became one of them. With his friends Jimmy Conway and Tommy De Vito, Henry lived the dream life of taking whatever he wanted and answering to no one—until everything caught up with him.

Back in 1990, "Goodfellas" lost the best Picture Oscar to "Dances With Wolves" and Martin Scorsese lost the Best Director Oscar to Kevin Costner. While I enjoyed "Dances With Wolves", in my opinion "Goodfellas" was the best film of that year and has certainly had the more significant afterlife. It's certainly more quoted than "Dances With Wolves". "Goodfellas" is my second favorite Scorsese film, right after "Taxi Driver". I know we've all learned that Oscars aren't all that indicative of actual quality, but still....

Alien: Romulus (2024) — The Alien franchise has had its ups and downs with mostly the latter in recent years. This latest one, which takes place in between Alien: Covenant and Alien in the timeline, is a solid entry from Fede Alvarez and is more in the vein of the first film in terms of look and tone. The story is pretty basic and no real twists that we haven't seen before in the franchise, but I did like the lead actress Cailee Spaeny. The classic line, "Getaway from her you bitch" was delivered as great as Bale's "I'll be back" from Terminator Salvation (meaning not very well). Still, an all around entertaining sci-fi horror film that has great effects, both practical and CGI. ***˝/***** (4K Ultra HD)

"A couple invite their closest friends to join their family for Christmas dinner at their idyllic home in the English countryside. As the group comes together, it feels like old times -- but behind all of the laughter and merriment, something isn't quite right. The world outside is facing impending doom, and no amount of gifts, games or wine can make mankind's imminent destruction go away. "

It was a little better than what I expected but not really a horror film.

The Bourne Supremacy
The Bourne Ultimatum Starz 4K
Matt Damon. Directed by Paul Greengrass. 2004/2007
(Supremacy) When his girlfriend is murdered and he is framed for the assassination of a fellow agent, Jason Bourne finds himself on the run again.
(Ultimatum) Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless CIA official and his agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.

Back in 2002 I watched the UK film "Bloody Sunday" and was quite impressed. "Bloody Sunday" was set during "The Troubles" and relates the story of an Irish Civil Rights march that turned into a battle with the British Army. Director Paul Greengrass used hand-held cameras ("sometimes called "shaky cam") to create a sense of immediacy and chaos and the result was quite riveting. Greengrass got the attention of Hollywood and took over the "Bourne" franchise from Doug Liman.

Greengrass brought his hand-held style to "Bourne" and the result is pretty impressive. It's all very chaotic and hard to follow, but it has a compelling energy. In a sense, what Greengrass does is the very heart of Cinema, as he takes random pieces of film and assembles them to create a story, a pace and a mood. The story of the Bourne films is mostly exposition, -random stuff like people looking at computer screens, listening in on phone calls, lining targets up in their sights, - but it has to be pieced together in a way that builds tension.

I had forgotten that "The Bourne Ultimatum" actually has an end for the Bourne's story. Universal tried to continue the franchise with Jeremy Renner, which I thought was a decent film, but just a half-hour too long. In 2016 Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass returned for "Jason Bourne", which was a big hit for the franchise, but I felt like it really had nowhere new to go. Perhaps I need to watch it again.

American Made AMC+ 4K
Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleason. Directed by Doug Liman. 2017
A pilot lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the deep south during the 1980s.

Doug Liman and Tom Cruise made the terrific but badly-titled "Edge of Tomorrow" and re-teamed "American Made". The film is "based on a true story", and as tends to be the case, the director admits that he was playing fast and loose with the actual events. Tom Cruise is affable, and the whole movie feels like a satire, until those few moments when it takes things seriously.

Deep End (1970)

Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski's dark coming-of-age movie made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 1970 to critical acclaim before promptly fading into obscurity due to rights issues. Deep End tells the story of a teenage boy named Mike (John Moulder Brown) who has been hired as an attendant at a local public bathhouse in London, where he is introduced to Susan (Jane Asher, former girlfriend of Paul McCartney), a 20-something woman who is tasked with training him for the job. As the two spend more time together, the somewhat shy Mike starts to develop a fixation with the self-assured Susan, who alternates between playfully teasing him one moment and then acting indifferent the next. Now taking to following her outside of work - where she is seeing more than one man - Mike is determined to win her over for himself. How this plays out is what makes this such an interesting film. Shot mainly in Munich (as a stand-in for London), it has a very European feel to it, along with a wonderful colour palette and a great soundtrack featuring Cat Stevens and the German psychedelic/experimental band Can. Unsettling, with an air of discomfort lingering throughout, this is nonetheless a forgotten gem, IMO. Bavaria Media completed a digital restoration of the film back in 2011 for a cinematic re-release in the UK and a blu-ray / dvd combo was then put out by BFI that same year, which looks and sounds fantastic. One of my favorite films from that era. Highly recommended.

Primal Instinct (2002) — Easily one of the worst movies I've seen. There is zero redeeming quality: direction, writing, acting, lighting, sound, editing... Zilch. This one I had on DVD but going straight into the trash. Either Michael Madsen was really hard up for any money or he did this as a favor, either way even he should be ashamed to have his name (and face) attached. ZERO/***** (DVD)
