The Messenger (2009).

Woody Harrelson looks and acts more and more like Robert Duvall as he gets older.

Cosmopolis - Another Cronenberg gem. Not for everyone.

The Reflecting Skin - Child growing up in Idaho 1950's and the fucked up things that happen around him. Feels like the offspring of David Lynch & Terence Malick. Excellent film & at times disturbing.

Long? This was an excellent movie full of rich characters. I plan to see it again and repeated viewings over the years.

I haven't seen the movie or the book it's based on but apparently is a true story. Could be a "true" adaptation, though...

^ More like loosely inspired by. The director even admits they took every liberty imaginable with the script (for "dramatic" purposes ) and weren't trying to depict the lives of the actual couple the scenario is based on. I figure that optioning their story was simply a technicality to avoid a potential lawsuit.

Definitely agree with you on that one. At times it's downright uncomfortable.

The Last Circus (2010): Absolutely loved everything about this film!

West of Memphis - 4/5 - Excellent documentary & good companion piece to Paradise Lost about The West Memphis 3. Produced by Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh.

The Wild One...not bad, but I wasn't in awe of Brando like I thought I would be. Maybe I missed something?

Purple Noon -- so much better than Minghella's Talented Mr. Ripley. I liked the plot cutting right to Tom and Greenleaf instead of the backstory that wasnt really needed. I appreciated the lack of gay subtext. This one had a different relationship between the two males and worked infinitely better. Also, nice ending as well. Oh and Alain Delon... damn. Not gay but damn.

Looper. Fantastic little sci/fi action movie. I would have prefered the ending not hit me over he head so hard with its final revelation but that's a small complaint for such a great movie. Joseph Gordon-Levitt impresses me more with every role I see him in.

Dredd
Wasn't as blown away by it as others, but it's definetly got 5-stars compared to the Stallone version.

SAVE THE DATE

i expected to like this because it's a great cast however i was ultimately let down. i assumed this was going to be a comedy but it was pretty much a drama with a few laughs here and there. i just never really connected with it completely. it's worth a rental if you're a fan of any of the cast members but i doubt i'll ever feel the need to watch it again. 3/5

Dredd - I'm in the minority, but I was not impressed whatsoever. Urban, Thirlby and Headey were good, but there was no excitement in it for me, and I never felt any peril for the characters.

Looper

Holy shit - this was incredible! Johnson's vision of the future is both fully realized and wholly scary, mostly because it seems so plausible. The film lost a bit of steam once the action moves to the farmhouse, but I was so enthralled by the proceedings that I never lost focus. It played out much differently than I was expecting. Lots of great performances.

Goon

This was just stupid through and through. It was even stupid for a Sean William Scott film.

Mamma Roma - 4.5/5 - Pier Paolo Pasolini's 2nd film about a former prostitute trying to distance herself from the life & guide her son on the right path.
Excellent heart breaking post neo-realist drama filled with religious symbolism and a wonderful performance by the great Anna Magnani.

Monsters Inc. 3-D: My favorite Pixar film! I'm always very skeptical when 3-D is done (way) after the fact. It looked great in this film, especially in the finale.

Re: Last movie you watched

Over the past week I did this:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - I remembered very little about the one time I watched this. The first half plays like the R. Lee Ermey story featuring proto-Leatherface. Once the second half gets going, however, things get much better and it even manages to end on a totally bleak note.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation - I just reminded myself there's a reason I'd only seen this once. Through and through, it's just atrocious. McConaughey is the only strong point here, but I'll also give Zellweger a little credit, too. Leatherface is just pathetic here.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre '03 - I liked this when it came out. Then I hated it. Now, I kinda like it again. Nispel overstuffed his turkey a bit, but it's a gorgeous film dripping in atmosphere. It's also the most brutal incarnation of Leatherface; he's such a force. The rest of the Hewitt family is terrible, though.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74 - This is, IMO, the quintessential horror film. And if you watch it with the right mindset (like pretending you're seeing this for the first time in the '70s) it's easy to see how it scared the hell out of people. Even today, it's just so bizarre and raw that it can still be seen as disturbing on many levels.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - Why does Leatherface dance so much? Moseley's Chop Top genuinely makes me feel uneasy everytime he's on screen, which is a real testament to Moseley's work. Siedow had me rolling with his constant one liners and bon mots. It's ironic that the only actual chainsaw massacre happens in this film... but they infamously cut it. Hooper should've left that footage in.

Dredd (2012): Finally got a chance to watch the Blu-Ray I bought. Re-visiting this film was just as fun as the first time I saw it.

Re: Last movie you watched

The Impossible This surpassed my expectations. Very sad, but a great story told very well. Maybe my favorite of 2012. Hope Naomi Watts gets the Oscar. I don't think it's possible for anyone to watch this and not have tears.

Zero Dark Thirty Very good also, but got to rewatch this again at some point. Lots going on.
