I think my dad wanted to rent that on VHS in the 80's when 7/11 had VHS rentals

Hulu 2023 "Deep in the Appalachian Mountains, Jacob desperately tries to escape his meth-dealing kingpin father and long-suffering mother to run off with the girl of his dreams." Now Hopper Penn has done a movie with his dad and mom now. It seemed like a ordinary movie for people like Robin Wright and Billy Bob Thornton to be involved in. Thornton and Jackie Earle Hailey could be brothers with their shaved heads  It is rare to see Thornton and maybe he is being choosy or not interested in doing a lot of projects. |

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Warner Archive Blu-Ray John Wayne. Directed by John Ford. 1949 Captain Nathan Brittles, on the eve of retirement, takes out a last patrol to stop an impending massive Indian attack. Encumbered by women who must be evacuated, Brittles finds his mission imperiled. A solid "Old School" Western directed by John Ford. This is the type of film my father loved, and I grew up on by osmosis, at first begrudgingly but then I came to embrace them. This is more of a character part for John Wayne, -he plays an older, slightly grizzled man nearing retirement, and he handles the part with surprising warmth and sensitivity. Ford uses his Monument Valley locations to great effect, and they become a major part of the film's overall impact. It's a beautiful disc, with its original Technicolor look lovingly restored. I've seen 4K discs that don't have this level of color and detail and it was a pleasure to watch. Anyway Thank You for giving your thoughts on the movies you watch. |

Knox Goes Away Lionsgate Blu-Ray Michael Keaton. Directed by Michael Keaton. 2023 A contract killer who was diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia has an opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. I would not classify this as a "Thriller", -it's much too cautiously paced for that. What made "Knox Goes Away" work for me is Michael Keaton, both as Actor and Director. Keaton's always been a charismatic actor, even as the years dialed down his manic energy. Here he gives a compelling performance as the title character, an intelligent, well-read man, -yet a cooly violent man, -trying to hold it together before everything slips away. As a director he gets good performances from James Marsden and the rest of the cast (Al Pacino appears for a bit, as does Marcia Gay Harden), and gives them room to create believable, "lived-in" characters rather than just bland Chess pieces in a Procedural.. It's not a new idea, -the hitman who's suffering from a form of Dementia, -but as an older guy, Knox's situation strikes closer to home these days and I couldn't help putting myself in his place, -well, except for all the killing. It might be a little on the long side, but as a Character Drama, it held my attention. |

Hulu 2024 "Recently incarcerated, Baron strikes up a friendship with his new cellmate, a man with a history of prison breaks. As they hatch a plan to escape, Baron recalls how he met the love of his life and how they came up with a scheme to rob a bank." I did not see the twist coming but it was still a average movie and the Camila Morrone character was annoying. |

American Psycho Lionsgate 4K Christian Bale, Directed by Mary Harron. 2000 A Wall Street yuppie hides his psychopathic alternate ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies. I never knew quite what to make of “American Psycho”, and I still don’t. The tone is both Satiric and Horrific, and the story never commits to what is Real or Fantasy with Patrick Bateman and is essentially unresolved. I think the film is more about taking jabs and making points than presenting a cohesive story, and that's by intention. And it's all set in the Wall Street of The Eighties, which is its own specific place and time. And yet I find it very entertaining. Christian Bale is terrific as “Patrick Bateman”, so expertly portrayed that the character almost becomes iconic (which was probably not the intention of the creators, but that’s what Film sometimes does). Bale does a magnificent job of making his face seem like a mask that Bateman is wearing. This is a case where the improvements of the 4K disc seem subtle, yet when I later compared it to the 2007 blu-ray included in the set, it’s a night-and-day difference. |

A Small Town in Texas Scorpion Releasing Blu-Ray Timothy Bottoms, Bo Hopkins. Directed by Jack Starrett. 1976 After doing five years in prison on a drug charge, Poke returns to his hometown intent on taking his sweetheart Mary Lee (and their child) away with him to California. His plan hits a snag, however, when he discovers that since his incarceration, Mary Lee has taken up with Duke, the very sheriff who put Poke behind bars in the first place. When the lead character has the name "Poke" you know you're looking at a film for the Southern Drive-In Market of The Seventies. The film requires a little patience, because it takes its time setting up the characters and the locale before it gets to the Murder and Action elements. Its well-written for a genre that really doesn't demand it. It's hardly an essential film, but it's not bad. The picture quality is outstanding. The disc cover (taken from the original poster) is better than the film itself, which is typical of the era. |

Navy Seals…what a great early 90’s action flick for a much under appreciated genre in films. You would think it was a Jim Cameron move with Paxton and Biehn. What a great cast, fun movie.

Netflix Not sure if you can buy this on 4k or Blu-ray and only bootlegs available probably. It was ok though not a lot of Godzilla scenes and more human scenes but that was probably the way they wanted. Still feels sill to hear dialogue dubbed into English and it would be less cheesy if they had Japanese dialogue with subtitles. |

A Quiet Place: Day One Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn. Directed by Michael Sarnoski. 2024 A woman named Sam finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing. Overall, I enjoyed the film, but it's not without its problems. It's essentially a small sad story of a fatalistic, terminally ill woman wanting to re-connect with a childhood memory before she dies, who must grudgingly come to aid a young British man consumed by anxiety, and her very chill, very resourceful "service cat". However, with such a simple story even at 93 minutes some scenes go on a bit too long. Also, we learn absolutely nothing new about the aliens, -they are essentially the same plot devices they were in the previous films and that makes them less effective. The room I saw it in was full, and that hasn't happened in a while. Everyone was well-behaved and there was no extraneous noise or talking or texting. There also weren't any crowd reactions, -jumps, "Oh, Sh*ts!" or anything like that, -and I wonder if that says something about the film. Was the audience engrossed, or were they unaffected? |

Alone with Her (2006) — Saw this when it was released on DVD and certainly a creepy, awkward and cringy movie in a found footage style (whole movie shot via spy-like cameras). Colin Hanks makes for a great creep and Ana Claudia Talancon is great in her first English-speaking film. Given this was released 18 years ago, stalking has become easier with social media and the expansion of the internet in that timeframe. ***½/***** (DVD)

The Crow (1994) — This is my first viewing of The Crow and it is a great, dark comic book adaptation that at times reminded me of Batman and moments that seemed to later inspire The Dark Knight, in particular with The Joker. It's a shame about Brandon Lee as he is amazing in the lead and this could've led to a great career. There are some poignant scenes and a genuine heart at its core. Just a home run from Alex Poyas. ****¼/***** (4K Ultra HD)

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest…What an amazing 6 part miniseries. The way they did it in this extended edition, cutting at just the right moments. It was like seeing a great streaming series. Rapace and Nyqvist were great. Especially Rapace. What she gives Lisbeth is nothing short of amazing. Even though she didn’t exude in every scene, the series was just great. Steig Larsson wrote masterpieces. This series was so good.

Hulu There was another movie called "Prey" and some up with a more original title -rolleyes- If it was 2003 or 2004 maybe a movie with Ryan Phillippe and Emile Hirsch would be a theatrical release. Now both of them are stuck in "B" movie purgatory. Hirsch seemed like a star on the rise with "Into the Wild" or maybe overestimated his abilities as a actor. |
