That sounds like it could be an interesting film. Apparently, Netflix has acquired it, so it may turn up at some point.

I heard about that but thought that might be coming out in the future and it was not already completed

Hope Netflix airs it sometime this year.

The Novice (2021)

Director Lauren Hadaway's debut feature is anchored by a stellar performance from Isabelle Fuhrman but is wafer-thin & over-directed.

Wished the film would've spent more time grounding its characters and less time on visual/audio flair.

The Animal Kingdon Magnolia Pictures Blu-Ray
Romain Duris. Directed by Thomas Cailley. 2023
In French with subtitles or with an English Dub
An adventure between a father and his son, in a world where some humans have started mutating into other animal species.

This is a film with an interesting premise for a SF/Fantasy film, but it offers more of a relaxed character study than a fully realized narrative. The story isn't really interested in a conventional beginning, middle or end or even explaining the cause of the mutations. I suppose it's all intended as metaphor. "The Animal Kingdom" is a bit too long at over two hours to be so vague and offer so little satisfaction.

Inside Out 2 Pixar/Disney
Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke. Directed by Kelsey Mann. 2024
Teenager Riley's mind headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren't sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up.

A well-made, entertaining film. It can't be as fresh as the original, obviously, but it's often clever and identifiable (even if you're not a pubescent hockey-playing young woman) and occasionally touching.

1996

The Movie Channel

"Chef Primo (Tony Shalhoub) and businessman Secondo (Stanley Tucci) are immigrant brothers from Italy who open their dream restaurant, Paradise, in New Jersey. However, Primo's authentic food is too unfamiliar for the local tastes, and the restaurant is struggling. When famous Italian-American bandleader Louis Prima is scheduled to appear at Paradise, the two brothers put all of their efforts into the important meal, which will likely decide the fate of their restaurant."

Maybe I saw this before but this was a lot better than all the crappy movies I have seen this month.

Worth a watch.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Who Framed Roger Rabbit - I'm not sure why I never watched this back when it was new, nor in the 36 years (!) since. I grew up loving all the old classic cartoons--Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, Popeye, Disney, etc. Especially the Tex Avery stuff. So this was very much up my alley and I've long considered it a gap in my pop culture background. I missed it in theaters and just never got around to it on video until now. I did try once before, but was very tired and fell asleep in the first few minutes. Having seen it now, I liked it, didn't love it. The animation and the integration of animation and live action works really well--it's a great technical achievement for the time, and I didn't expect any less from director Robert Zemeckis. Bob Hoskins is great as the hardboiled private detective, and Christopher Loyd is appropriately menacing as the antagonist. I just don't think the story gives the viewer enough of an emotional connection with Roger and the rest of Toontown to really care that much what happens to them, because the zaniness is dialed up to 11 on any scene with the toons.

Stopmotion (2023)

When Director/Writer Robert Morgan's film delves in the world of odd & disturbing stop-motion animation, it absolutely had my interest.

Sadly, every minute outside that is wasted on tired tropes and unlikable characters.

The Bikeriders (2024)

Performances were solid, especially from Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus and Mike Faist.

Also has an absolutely fantastic soundtrack.

A lot of reviews highlight Jodie Comer's performance which fell mostly flat for me, which is a shame because she literally anchors the chosen narrative/framing of the film (interviews/flashbacks).

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021)

If you are a fan of the Anime series, you'll probably enjoy this as it's entertaining albeit a bit rushed in storytelling.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Babysitter Wanted (2009) — Had its moments I guess but tonally uneven with the first half a standard horror-thriller while the second half was more supernatural horror. I think under a more experienced director, with some rewrites to the screenplay, could've made for an entertaining flick but instead it's choppy editing with some gross horror thrown in toward the end. I will say at least the lead Sarah Thompson was alright. **/***** (Blu-ray)

Bluebeard Shout! Factory Blu-Ray
Richard Burton. Directed by Edward Dmytryk. 1972
Baron Kurt Von Sepper has just married his seventh wife, Anne. One day, she finds a mysterious golden key which gives access to a secret passage where she finds Bluebeard's six previous wives. It is then that the Baron recounts to her the horrid and bizarre details of his past. It remains for Anne to fight for her survival and to avoid becoming just another beautiful frozen body.

As a teen in the early Seventies, "Bluebeard" had a certain lurid mystique about it. It featured a lot of beautiful actresses, and it promised a lot of nudity. It was being promoted like a Horror movie, with Richard Burton killing his wives in a variety of stylized ways, as if he were "The Abominable Dr. Phibes". And I knew I'd never get to see it until it played on late-night Television, with all the good parts cut out. "Bluebeard" (and, yes, Richard Burton has a blue beard) turned out to be a notorious bomb, got terrible reviews, and just sort of disappeared.

Having finally seen it, I can confirm it has the nudity. And the reviews weren't wrong. However, I've got to say, "Bluebeard" is a good-looking movie, very colorful and stylish and the Shout! disc has great picture quality. I only wish that Mario Bava could have directed it instead of Dmytryck, -with the S+M, the baroque murders, and the exotic set designs, -he'd have made a meal of it.

HBO

I know it has been more miss than hits lately for Oliver Stone but wish he would do more movies since he is getting there in age and don't know how long he will be with us.

Tuesday (2024)

Director Daina O. Pusić's debut feature is over-stuffed and a tonal mess.

Left the theater feeling not much of anything.

Tarot (2024)

Directors/Writers Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg's effort is exactly what you'd expect of a Horror film of this type. Incredibly derivative and predictable.

Even so, the film's pacing is surprisingly solid as are a few of it's creature designs.

Dybbuk Box: True Story of Chris Chambers (2019)

I'll admit that I'm a mark for Found Footage films, even the shitty ones that go up on Tubi.

Even at 60-minutes in length, Director/Writer Joseph Mazzaferro's film is hilariously rough, even as a Paranormal Activity (2007) clone.

The Lawnmower Man (1992)

Not a great film by any means but it's hard not to admire a film that goes this apeshit
