Jim Henson, Idea Man Disney+
Directed by Ron Howard. 2024
A documentary detailing the life and career of Muppet creator Jim Henson.

I suppose this is Ron Howard having to look beyond Theatrical films in this shaky creative environment. He does a nice job here, presenting a creative and entertaining view of Henson's career. Now that Jim Henson has become more of a brand name, it's nice to go back and look at the man behind The Muppets, and hopefully get inspiration from him. It's definitely a warts-and-all portrayal, though it leans into the positive, of course, and deservedly so. I really enjoyed this.

I own this

I have not seen it in decades but it was $12.99 at Amazon a couple of months ago.

I forgot Jeff Daniels and Alan Ruck were in it and a cool Billy Idol song in the closing credits.

RIP Dennis Hopper

Trespass Shout! Factory Blu-Ray
Bill Paxton, Ice T. Directed by Walter Hill. 1992
Two Arkansas firemen, Vince and Don, get hold of a map that leads to a cache of stolen gold in an abandoned factory in East St. Louis.

This is Walter Hill's gritty Urban Action flick, from an old script by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, inspired by "The Treasure of Sierra Madre". It has a terrific cast including Bill Paxton, William Sadler, Ice T, Ice Cube, Glenn Plummer, and Art Evans. It's a good, tense film that doesn't play it safe.

This is a typical Shout! Collector's Edition that includes some nice featurettes, some of which frankly discuss the racial tensions brewing at the time the film was being made and how that changed the film and its release and its subsequent failure at the box office.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

Although Director Guy Ritchie's 121-minute Nazi-stomping romp is entertaining & (surprisingly) breezy, it isn't anything all that memorable.

Henry Cavill & Alan Ritchson absolutely steal every scene they are a part of though.

The Fall Guy (2024)

It's intended to be a love letter to the Stunt Crews around the world and ends up feeling bloated like another bloated Director David Leitch film.

Enjoyed Ryan Gosling & Emily Blunt's performances in addition to the audacious final act.

Challengers (2024)

Beautifully shot but Director Luda Guadagnino's latest film wasn't meant for my viewing.

Abigail (2024)

At this point, I'll watch anything that Directors Matt Bettinnelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett put out, even if they aren't behind the script.

Although the film didn't change my feelings on Melissa Barrera, it's enough of a vampire splat-fest to get through it's oddly-paced 104-minutes.

Loved the performances by Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand & Alisha Weir.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)

For those who thought the previous installment was wafer thin and derivative, it's follow-up no different.

It's entertaining though I question the limited use of the character of Jimmy (Anthony Hopkins), who is the most interesting piece of this universe.

Also I could've done without the hilarious slow-motion shots of harvesting

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)

Director Wes Anderson adapting the work of Roald Dahl in short form is deliriously entertaining.

I need Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel & Ben Kingsley in every Wes Anderson film.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Absolutely wonderful performances from Anya Taylor-Joy & Chris Hemsworth & Alyla Brown.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) felt like the fresher film but the return to wasteland was very appreciated here.

Boy Kills World (2024)

Quite honestly, I thought I would enjoy this film purely based on the trailers. In the end, it felt a bit unsatisfying and average.

While the fight scenes are enjoyable, the film is tonal mess and isn't as humorous as it would itself believe.

Thought the voice-over felt distracting as well.

Exhuma (2024)

Director/Writer Jang Jae-Hyun's latest film absolutely oozes atmosphere at its seams, though the screenplay is a bit jumbled.

Loved the focus on Korean Shamanism, exhumation and geomancy.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)

Lacks the atmosphere of The Strangers (2008) and the visceral nature of The Strangers: Prey At Night (2018).

One of the worst films that I've seen this year. It's existence is merely to setup future films in the upcoming trilogy.

In A Violent Nature (2024)

Outside of the one gonzo gore scene, it's difficult to pinpoint what Director/Writer Chris Nash was aiming for here, especially in the final 15-minutes.

Even at a fairly lean 94-minutes, the film has excruciating slow pacing for no other reason than to triple-down on its gimmick.

In my opinion, Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) handled the subversion of the genre much better.

Judgment Night Warner Archive Blu-Ray
Emilio Estevez. Directed by Stephen Hopkins. 1993
On their way to a boxing match, 4 friends get off the expressway in the worst part of town to avoid a traffic jam. But they cross paths with a psychotic drug lord, Fallon, who kills one of his subordinates right before their eyes--and wants no witnesses.

Having watched "Trespass" earlier in the day, it seemed to follow that I should watch "Judgment Night" tonight; I tend to link them because they came out less than a year apart and are very similar films. While "Trespass" strives for a gritty realism, "Judgment Night" is more of a Horror/Action hybrid, like The Director's previous film "Predator 2". This time Dennis Leary and his henchmen are the marauding "monster" the good guys are trying to escape from. It even has a "Predator-esque" score from Alan Silvestri. It's a tense, under-rated Thriller with a particularly good performance from Cuba Gooding, Jr, and Emilio Estevez really resembles his father Martin Sheen when he was in his Thirties.

While the disc has no extras, it's a quality presentation of the film, which has a striking use of Color.
