Netfflix but expires on April 30 and moves to another streamer or AMC+?

2021

"Disillusioned with the music industry, a big-city rap star re-evaluates his life and career while spending time in a small-town farming community."

I was searching for a short movie and this indie comedy slash drama was not bad and David Krumholtz was in it so that was a bonus.

Starz

1997

"Phillip (Vincent D'Onfrrio) is a nobody with more luck than good sense. His weeks-long winning streak in the casinos of Las Vegas attracts the attention of various hustlers, including his own brother (Michael Madson), his ex-wife (Rebecca De Mornay) and her current boyfriend (Billy Bob Thornton)."

A good cast but a bad mediocre movie.

The 1996 or 1997 Las Vegas skyline looks dated

The only thing that kept me interested was how hot De Mornay looked back then.

Starz

2018

"Freed from juvenile detention, a teenage girl and her 10-year-old sister set out on a journey to seek justice for their mother's death."

Dominique Fishback plays the lead and Max Casella has a small brief role.

I did not know Jordana Spiro directed movies.

2022

Starz

"Stripped of their possessions, six strangers wake up in a remote, endless cornfield with six items -- a gun with a single bullet, matches, a lantern, a knife, a compass and a flask of water. As mysterious sirens blare in the distance and traps appear at every turn, they soon realize they're in a mysterious cat-and-mouse game with an unseen evil, and survival depends upon solving a diabolical and deadly puzzle."

It sucked and I was bored and did not care.

That Man Bolt Kino Lorber Blu-Ray
Fred Williamson. Directed by Henry Levin, David Lowell Rich. 1973
Professional courier Jefferson Bolt is hired to take a briefcase from Hong Kong to Mexico City, via Los Angeles. With the number of dangerous spies and gangsters who are after that briefcase, maybe Jefferson Bolt is not enough.
'

Universal did not intend for "That Man Bolt" to be a '70s "Blaxploitation" film, and it really isn't, though it's often perceived that way. It's more of an attempt at a mid-budget International Adventure film with Fred Williamson as it's "James Bond". Williamson is a charismatic lead, and the film is a slick and entertaining "B" movie.

Because movie tastes are highly subjective.

I saw it last Fall when it originally came out and was entertained, but it's not something I feel the urge to rewatch.

Sasquatch Sunset
Jesse Eisenberg, Rylie Keough. Directed by David Zellner, Nathan Zellner. 2024
In the misty forests of North America, a family of Sasquatches-possibly the last of their enigmatic kind- embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year.

Possibly the most unusual film I’ll see this year. It’s a faux documentary of one year in the life of a family of Sasquatches, with no dialogue or narration. It’s played entirely “straight” and while some of the behavior is crude and laughable, it’s so matter-of-fact that it never comes across as the directors winking at the audience (well, maybe a little). There are also sad and tragic moments, and the Sasquatches bewilderment is affecting. You come to care about these creatures, who seem doomed but manage to persevere.

On the technical side, the cinematography is really beautiful, and the Sasquatch make-up and full-body suits are top-notch. All credit to the actors, who must have been dying in those costumes; they really create a wonderful illusion.

I saw this at the Saturday 10pm show with three other people; the Seven O'clock show had six. This is a special film, but it’s also the very definition of a film that isn’t for everybody.

Late Night with the Devil Shudder
David Dastmalchian. Directed by Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes. 2023
Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy hosts a syndicated talk show 'Night Owls' that has long been a trusted companion to insomniacs around the country. However, ratings for the show have plummeted. Desperate to turn his fortunes around, on October 31st, 1977, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other--unaware he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America.

"Late Night with the Devil" is a Shudder film that actually got a brief Theatrical release. It was made on a low budget, apparently in Melbourne, Australia. It’s framed as a lost broadcast being shown in its entirety for the first time. For the most part it pulls off the look and feel of a '70s era talk show, though it plays like more of a Syndicated show than a Network Talker. David Dastmalchian, -who often turns up in supporting roles these days, -does a very convincing job in the lead role, playing it with just the right balance of "reality" and heightened drama. Some of the other performers are a bit too melodramatic for the illusion they're trying to create. The conclusion tries to do a little too much and gets a bit muddled, but overall, it's an entertaining little Horror film.

William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet 20th Century Fox Blu-Ray
Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes. Directed by Baz Lurhmann. 1996
Shakespeare's play is transferred to the modern urban backdrop of Verona Beach, California. The Montague and Capulet families are embroiled in a long-running feud. When Romeo, a Montague, attends a Capulet ball in disguise, he falls in love with the beautiful Juliet. Juliet vows to marry Romeo, but bloodshed and tragedy threaten the couple's future together.

Back in the '90s, there were a lot of inventive takes on Shakespeare film adaptations, from Kenneth Branagh's four-hour "Hamlet" to Ian Mckellan's "Richard III" which sets its story in a 1930s era Fascist regime. Though only his second film, "Romeo + Juliet" is typical Baz Luhrmann film, jam-packed with modern, very "meta" details presented in his usual hyperbolic fashion. The film does present Shakespeare's text (with several changes and abridgements), and I could only keep up by turning on the subtitles. The film is actually quite good when it slows down and actually delivers an emotional moment. DiCaprio and Danes are more convincing than I remembered; I never really took Leo all that seriously as a lead until "The Aviator".

However, while I enjoyed it for a while, eventually the film and its pace wore me out. The Fox disc comes from a time when studios cared about "Bonus Material", and the disc is filled to the brim with behind-the-scenes material and insights.

I saw this in the theater while my friend suffereds through Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.

One of the all time classic comedies and a homage and a parody of hip hip and the Ice T and Ice Cube cameos

I was into rap back then big time during that era the movie came out.

In 1899 France, a young writer named Christian leaves his family home and moves to the seedy, bohemian underworld of Montmartre, Paris. Christian meets Satine, the most beautiful courtesan in Paris and star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub and enters into a passionate but doomed love affair.

When the film takes a breath and lets an honest emotion play out, "Moulin Rouge!" is a pretty terrific musical. I'm thinking of MacGregor singing "Your Song", or Kidman's solo, as well as some of the darker, emotional scenes in the Third Act. However, so much of it is like a baker putting whipped creme on top of butter creme, on top of fondant, and then throwing on some sprinkles. I don't mind Melodrama, but I dislike Camp, and the film dances back-and-forth from one to the other so many times. I will say that MacGregor has a commendable singing voice.

Once you get past the first ten minutes or so, the disc looks rock solid despite its age, though if Fox wasn't owned by Disney, I'm sure "Moulin Rouge!" would have gotten a needed 4K makeover by now. The disc has an excellent picture-in-picture commentary track that features the film's designs, behind-the-scenes footage, and rehearsals.
Thanks for reminding me to re-watch this great movie. Yes it's over the top but fun. Nichole Kidman is gorgeous. Great songs, the music rights must have been a horror, but nice that the actors are actually singing. The choppy cutting works. I don't know much about Bollywood movies but I can see how it was an inspiration. Maybe it would be better if love died that way instead of the mundane way it usually does in real life.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 20th Century Fox 4K
James Franco. Directed by Rupert Wyatt. 2011
Our greatest discovery will become the world's greatest threat when a scientist on the verge of a medical breakthrough begins testing on a young chimpanzee named Caesar. But when the chimp develops human-like intelligence and emotions, an epic battle ensues to determine the dominant species on the planet.

I always get a bit confused by this trilogy. I always think the title of the first film should be "Dawn of...", while "Rise of..." seems more appropriate for the second. Either way, it's a great film. It starts with an excellent script that explains in a logical way the events of the original film (apes acquiring human-level intelligence, the virus that killed much of the human population, Taylor's vanished space mission). It takes the story just far enough, allowing the sequels to tell the rest of the story (though those sequels might not have happened if the movie bombed). "Gollum" might be actor/performance artist Andy Serkis's most memorable work, but I believe "Caesar" is his masterpiece. Fox delivers a great 4K disc.
