Wish Disney+ 4K Chris Pine, Ariana DeBose. Directed by Chris Buck. 2023 In the Kingdom of las Rosas, a 17-year-old girl named Asha senses a darkness that no one else does about the kingdom's ruler, King Magnífico. This eventually leads to her trying to make a passionate plea to the stars and soon, an actual star from the sky named Star answers Asha's wish. Together, Asha and Star must overcome the evils rising in Rosas and fight for a better future for their people. First let me say that I've enjoyed "Moana" and "Tangled" and some other Disney films and I enjoy Musicals in general. However, "Wish" reminded me of those direct-to-video sequels Disney turned out in the 2000s. It's just second-rate, apprentice level stuff that plays like a rough draft of "Incanto". However, the voice work and the musical performances are quite good, though the songs are overworked and unmemorable. I just found myself annoyed for the most part and threw in the towel about half-way in. That being said, I'm sure children will enjoy it, and they're more the target audience than this cranky old man. |

Run Silent, Run Deep Kino Lorber Blu-Ray Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster. Directed by Robert Wise. 1958 "Rich" Richardson is a hard-driving, dedicated submarine officer with a single-minded purpose -- to seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sunk his former ship. Given a new command, -taking it from a younger officer who had earned it, -Richardson drills his men to the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. A Classic World War II "Submarine" movie, with strong performances from Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Lancaster (who produced the film) strived for authenticity and top-notch director Robert Wise ("The Day the Earth Stood Still", "West Side Story", "The Haunting"), along with his editor, ratchets up the tension with tight shots in close quarters and a lean running time. Excellent supporting cast with the oddity of Don Rickles getting a lot of screen time as one of the crew. The black-and-white cinematography is grainy and gritty, which makes it feel more authentic. Kino Lorber provides a nice transfer. |

Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces Apple+ Steve Martin. Directed by Morgan Neville. 2024 The life and career of Steve Martin, from two perspectives. As "Steve!" is comprised of two feature-length documentaries, I'll count it as a "Movie". The first documentary looks at Steve Martin's rise as a stand-up comic, until he stepped away in 1980 never to perform as a solo act again. Martin comes across as a thoughtful, intelligent man with a very clever, but very, very silly act. Like many comedians, the nature of his act seems a cover for a very private person. The clips are fun and sometimes enlightening, and it's surprising how long he was just plugging away until his "meteoric" rise. The second documentary visits at Steve Martin at 75. He's now a happily married man with a twelve-year-old daughter, a successful Hulu series, and travelling act with Martin Short. He's definitely opened up as a person and seems fairly content. Martin reflects on his long movie career and other artistic pursuits (as well as his pursuit of Art). This second doc is more contemplative and moves at a more measured pace (as does Martin). It's insightful, but it might work better taken in pieces (which is what I did) |

Criterion - I started watching this awhile ago and thought it's charming but it's young people flirting. I'm too old for that. I restarted it a bit later and enjoyed it more. I was in a reminiscing mood and the movie reminded me of a lot of moments from my life, although of course not in one night. I guess it reminded me of falling in love and while I don't expect that to happen again it's nice remembering the BS philosophizing you go through with a new person.. I liked the bit about writing a story for an English class where you write about killing your lover. I actually did that and got pretty much the same reaction, it's just a story. Sometimes it's nice to watch a movie that leaves a warm glow. |

The Road Warrior Warner Bros 4K Mel Gibson. Directed by George Miller. 1981 In an apocalyptic future, Max Rockatansky helps a small band of survivors who are losing their struggle to protect an oil refinery under siege by a band of savage marauders. It's a Classic ...and a film that launched a thousand knockoffs. |

The Outside Man Kino Lorber Blu-Ray Jean-Louis Trintignant. Directed by Jacques Deray. 1973 A French hit man is hired by a crime family to end the life of a rival mobster, but things fall apart when the boss who hired him is killed. This is a film with a French director and star, set in the United States with a cast of familiar American actors. "The Outside Man" is a mostly low-key Crime film with a laid-back editing style and little-to-no score. That is, until the powerful and violent finale, which ends with shootings and chases and closes with an abrasive Musical flourish. I would also say that Roy Scheider brings a welcome, menacing energy to his scenes as a rival hitman, just by the intensity of his presence. As a Seventies Crime film, I found it an interesting curio. Kino provides both the familiar French version of the film, as well as a longer "uncut" English-Language "International" version of the film, each on separate discs. "The Outside Man" has a revisionist color-timing that's intended to make it look more contemporary, and while I guess it sometimes achieves that, it occasionally creates some really peculiar color values; it seems to violate the matter of fact look the director seems to be going for. The disc also features a highly entertaining commentary. |

DarkGame (2024) — Watchable I suppose and Ed Westwick, whom I've never seen anything else in, made for a capable lead but most of the acting was subpar and plot points were either terribly convenient or just outright dumb. The ending also wasn't great with inexplicably our lead doesn't ask for backup until the last moment. You're probably better off checking out 2008's Untraceable (which also takes place and shot in in Portland, Oregon; this one looks like it was shot in Europe somewhere). **¾/***** (Blu-ray)

Monkey Man Dev Patel. Directed by Dev Patel 2024 An anonymous young man unleashes a campaign of vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless. "Monkey Man" is a violent Revenge story bolstered by a strong Third Act. Dev Patel is excellent in his role and makes a promising debut as a director. My only stylistic complaint is that he shoots most of the film in very tight close-ups, which reminded me of the early films of Tony Scott. However, if I were watching this at home, I would have turned on the "sub-titles" (I generally do this with Guy Ritchie films like "The Gentlemen"). Much of the film is in English, but the accents are heavy, and the dialogue sometimes gets lost in the aggressive sound mix. I got the gist of what was being said, but I may have missed some of the nuance. Also, there's not a lot of direct exposition, -it's mostly relayed visually through flashbacks, -and I'm not sure if I was understanding the local politics and some of the relationships, though it's very clear who the bad guys were. |

Stowaway (2021)
Solid performances from a wonderful cast, anchored by Toni Collette. Well-made but indistinguishable from a slew of other Space Dramas. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The Zone of Interest (2023)
Had I seen this film the year it was released, it would have easily ranked near the top of my end-of-lists. The sound design alone was incredibly nauseating, which is a critique of its effectiveness. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Anyone But You (2023)
Even at 108-minutes, the film overstays it's welcome due to its repetitiveness but Sydney Sweeney & Glen Powell are absolutely adorable in this. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
In The Land of Saints and Sinners (2023)
Considering the subject matter & stacked cast, I wasn't expecting this film to be so dull. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Monkey Man (2024)
While there are clear pacing issues, Director/Writer Dev Patel's debut feature is quite impressive. Those looking for non-stop action scenes will be sorely disappointed. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The First Omen (2024)
I'm not sure Religious Horror Films have anything new or interesting to say anymore, so much that the first 15-minutes of this film hilariously resemble Immaculate (2024). If you can get past the dull script and measured fan service, there's a great performance from Nell Tiger Free, who absolutely is the highlight of the film. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The Royal Hotel (2023)
Although the film's themes are incredibly obvious, it's characters and script (based on Pete Gleeson's novel Hotel Coolgardie) aren't as fleshed out as they should be. Director Kitty Green creates a fantastic amount of tension throughout the film, only to have it end on a whimper. Julia Garner's performance is solid and I can't absolutely hate a film that gave me Wake In Fright (1971) vibes. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Megalomaniac (2022)
Director Karim Ouelhaj's film tonally lies somewhere between Marian Dora's Cannibal (2006) and the New Wave of French Horror of the 2000s. Eline Schumacher & Benjamin Ramon are fantastic in their roles as offspring of the infamous Butcher of Mons, even if the film sags quite a bit in its second act. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Waves (2019)
Though fairly unpopular, I've enjoyed Director/Writer Trey Edward Shults' previous output (Krisha & It Comes At Night). This film attempts to speak on themes of toxic masculinity & forgiveness but pours itself needlessly into eye-rolling needle drop moments. It's an overall waste of Drew Daniels' gorgeous cinematography and solid performances from its cast (Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell, Sterling K. Brown). |

Payback Warner Bros UK Blu-Ray Mel Gibson, Greg Henry. Directed by Brian Helgeland. 1999 Porter is a ruthless thief who is betrayed by his wife and his partner after a big heist and left for dead. He manages to survive and comes back seeking his cut (and only his cut) and he'll go through anyone to get it. John Boorman's "Point Blank" with Lee Marvin is a stone-cold classic; it was an adaptation of "The Hunter" by Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake), one of a series of novels featuring "Parker", a career criminal. "Payback" is Brian Helgeland's adaptation of "The Hunter", with Mel Gibson leading a terrific cast of veteran character actors. It's a bleak, mean-spirited film with a lot of cold-blooded violence that didn't test well with audiences. Paramount had the film re-edited and the third act re-written and re-shot (by another director) adding more dark humor, a more conventional pay-off, and a sarcastic voice-over narration by Mel's character". The corrected version made a profit. Eight years later Helgeland was allowed to reconstruct his original version for Home Video (though Mel Gibson prefers the Theatrical). The UK All-Region disc has both cuts and the story behind both versions of the film, while the US disc only has the Director's cut. I prefer the Director's Cut, which feels truer to the source material and a less of a conventional 90s Action Film. It's not a classic like "Point Blank", but it's a good Crime film. I believe both versions are now on Amazon Prime. |

Free on Tubi 2016 "A kindhearted 17-year-old in the American Southwest turns to prostitution to fulfill her dream of a new life in San Francisco." I never heard of this or knew it existed. Christopher Abbott, Mirielle Enos, Mary Steenburgen, and Jim Belushi round out the cast. Olivia Cooke shows her tits and maybe her ass in two scenes It was stupid for her to Spoiler:

Part of the box set I own Sucks no more Godfather movies to watch I liked the original cut better and Coppola should have kept it the way it was. Still it is not that bad and it would be hard to live up to parts 1 and 2 which were all-time classics and could never be duplicated. I liked the characters and wanted to see them as they aged and got older. Sofia Coppola takes all the blame but she was pretty back then though her acting was not up to par. Maybe they could have gotten Bridget Fonda to play Mary or too old or Waspy. It is still better than the 3rd sequels of other movie franchises like Back to Future, Jurassic Park, and Dark Knight Rises. Still surprised nobody brings up the incest factor with Mary and Vincent when they were cousins. WTF? |
