Showtime

"As a group of seniors celebrate their final college days at a smart house, the house's highly advanced AI system, Margaux, begins to take on a deadly presence of her own. A carefree weekend of partying turns into a dystopian nightmare as they realize Margaux's plans to eliminate her tenants one way or another."

Vanessa Morgan looks different in every movie or project she does

CasinoÖwhat a fucking great movie that might not rank as top tier Scorsese, but it is, it so is. This movie is like a culmination of all his gangster/mob movies made before the 2000ís. Itís a true masterpiece that I donít think gets as much credit as it deserves.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Maybe people thought it was the same movie as Goodfellas or a unofficial sequel and overlooked it.

The Sharon Stone character did get on your nerves.

2022

Hulu

"A woman returns home to care for her ailing mother, whom she hasn't seen in years."

Patricia Clarkson plays the sick mom

Spoiler:
I was kind of blindsided finding out the main character was trans and that is why she and her mom did not get along. I assumed it was for her behavior and doing sex work. When I saw her back it looked manly and something was off about her.

Unless you want to see some hot chicks beating the shit out of each other while under the eye of a demented psychopath played by Doug Jones this is not a must see

The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan Samuel Goldwyn Films Blu-Ray
Vincent Cassel, Eva Green. Directed by Martin Bourboulon. 2023
(Available in French with English Sub-Titles or an English-Dubbed Track)
D'Artagnan arrives in Paris trying to find his attackers after being left for dead, which leads him to a real war where the future of France is at stake. He aligns himself with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, three musketeers of the King.

There have been many, many adaptations of the Alexandre Dumas novel, with varying degrees of faithfulness. Richard Lester directed two excellent "All-Star Cast" films in the '70s, Disney had a brisk, entertaining version in the '90s with Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland, and there was a dynamic 3D version in 2013 from Paul Anderson with Milla Jovovich that I enjoyed but many didn't.

This version is darker, grittier (both literally and figuratively) with more dramatic urgency (there's a lot of camera moves and a propulsive underscore moving scenes forward). There's also more blood, a bit of nudity, and a lot more gunplay than I expected. The action scenes are quite dynamic, and the film puts an emphasis on Suspense. It doesn't add much new to the story, but it is entertaining.

"As a young boy, Danny (Jude Law) helped deliver his neighbor's infant daughter, Anna Swann. Despite his various relationships, Danny's always felt that he was destined to marry Anna. Twenty-five years later Danny returns to his home town and runs into a full-grown Anna (Gretchen Mol). The only problem is that she is already engaged to Eric (Jon Tenney). Not one to give up on fate, Danny insinuates himself into Anna's family life, which forces him to contend with some rather eccentric characters."

Gretchen Mol is a smokeshow was the "It" star in the late 90's and early aughts to play the lead but now she appears occasionally in projects here and there.

Hulu

"One night in his near-empty London tower block, screenwriter Adam has a chance encounter with mysterious neighbor Harry, puncturing the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam finds himself drawn back to his childhood home, where his parents appear to be living just as they were on the day they died 30 years ago."

I wanted to love it but it was just ok

Mad Max Kino Lorber 4K
Mel Gibson. Directed by George Miller. 1979
In the ravaged near future, a vengeful Australian police officer sets out to stop a violent motorcycle gang.

"Mad Max" really isn't that much different than the countless American International Exploitation movies that came before it. At its heart it's a low budget Revenge film just like the ones that played in drive-ins across the US. You could argue that the film is poorly constructed, and that it doesn't really feature its titular hero all that much. However, George Miller brings such visual style to it, -nobody shoots a road scene like him, - and it has Brian May's hyperbolic score duct-taping the whole thing together. Forty-odd years later I think it still works and this is probably the best it's ever looked.

Bullet Train Discoteck Media Blu-Ray
Ken Takakura, Sonny Chiba. Directed by Junya Sato. 1975
A bomber tells the police that unless they pay his ransom, he will explode a bomb he placed on a Japanese "Bullet Train." Any attempt to diffuse the bomb or slow the train under 80 km/h will automatically detonate the bomb. The Japanese police are in a race against time to locate the bomber and discover how to defuse the bomb.

Watching the film, it didn't constantly remind me of "Speed", though you think it would. It's more of a "Procedural", -something like "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3", - than an American-style "Disaster Movie", though that may have been what they were going for in 1975. It's a solid well-made film for the most part, but it's just too long at two-and-a-half hours; the middle hour drags with numerous flashbacks, but the action picks up considerably in the Third Act. Ken Takakura is very good as the bomber (he was Michael Douglas's co-star in "Black Rain") and Sonny Chiba ("The Streetfighter") brings his usual anger and energy to his role as The Conductor, with lots of "eyeball-acting" and rivulets of sweat streaming down his face. There is a moment out of "Airplane" when a male passenger slaps a female passenger because she's gotten hysterical.

Dune Part Two
Timothy Chalamet. Directed by Denis Villeneuve. 2024
Duke Paul Atreides joins the Fremen and begins a spiritual and martial journey to become Muad'dib, while trying to prevent the horrible but inevitable future he's witnessed: a Holy War in his name, spreading throughout the known universe.

I've been hearing nothing but effusive praise for the film all week (while avoiding spoilers, -though David Lynch's "Dune" is a bit of a spoiler in and of itself) and it's a little daunting. It's almost as if you're being dared not to like the movie. Well, I liked the movie, -I liked it a lot, in fact. It does a masterful job of creating this desert world, the battle for control of its resources, and the religious struggle within the Fremen society. At times it reminded me of an old school Biblical Epic, at other times "Lawrence of Arabia". Timothy Chalamet is quite convincing in the lead, and while Zendaya is successful, she's more than upstaged by several other actors in showier performances including Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, and Rebecca Ferguson.

I couldn't afford to see this in Imax or Dolby, so in a standard theater this movie full of dark scenes at night or in caves can seem a little visually murky at times. It's definitely a film that takes its subject matter seriously; it's not a cynical film full of quippy one-liners, which is refreshing. It's a long film, but much like "John Wick 4" last year, I didn't really feel it.

Triple 9 (2016) — This is my second viewing and didn't enjoy it as much the first go around, which was back in '16. While it has a stacked cast giving mostly good performances, though never bought Kate Winslet as anyone to be dangerous or to be feared, but the biggest letdown was with the screenplay which could've been tighter and had better focus. This seemed to be a cross between Heat and Dark Blue but lacked the suspense, crime or drama of either one. I think in the hands of Michael Mann or Ridley Scott might've made some of the style compensate for what the script but instead it was watchable but forgettable. ***/***** (Blu-ray)

Dune- hadnít seen it since going to it in the theater and the first time wasnít a great experience as I fell asleep off and on during it. I think the movie looks great and is well acted. Maybe not completely invested into the story yet though. Iíll probably see Part Two soon.

Spaceman Netflix
Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan. Directed by Johan Renck. 2024
Half a year into his solo mission on the edge of the solar system, a Czech astronaut concerned with the state of his life back on Earth is helped by an ancient creature he discovers in the bowels of his ship.

A somber, thoughtful SF Drama. A very unusual piece from Adam Sandler, playing a morose Czech astronaut named Jakub, who contemplates his relationship with his wife Lenka and the rift between them. It's an investment, but it can pay off if you're patient, -perhaps very patient, -and you're in the mood for it.

I tried to be patient but it was just ok though admire Sandler for trying to expand his range and he can do drama too.

Apple +

I am cheap and got a free 1 month trial of Apple One so I did not have to pay the $9.99 monthly fee or pay $19.95 and buy a digital version.

I ran out my three-month trial a while back and since Apple doubled their monthly price I doubt I'll go back without a deal. I'm cheap, too.

I was interested in "Napolean" prior to its Theatrical run, but the reviews pretty consistently indicated that the 2.5 hour version felt incomplete, and the promised 4-hour version was probably the way to go (though nobody has seen it yet. That seems to be a regular thing with Ridley Scott films.
