Godzilla Warner Bros 4K
Ken Watanabe. Directed by Gareth Edwards. 2014
Ford Brody, a Navy bomb expert, is swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity.

Back in December I saw "Godzilla Minus One" which I thought was one of the best movies of the year, and possibly the best Godzilla film ever.

And then there's Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" which is both a well-made film in many respects, and a very frustrating one as well. The story is serious enough for a Godzilla film (not like the loony 1998 film), it's well-paced for the most part, and the performances are quite convincing for this type of genre effort. But the audience is coming to see Godzilla, and Edwards keeps him off screen for what seems like fifty minutes, if not more. And when we do get Godzilla action, it's brief glimpses and then he cuts to something else. We don't get a full-scale battle until the climax of the film.

And then there's all the darkness. Most of the action, -hell, most of the film, -is outdoor night scenes or darkened rooms and when I saw it in the theater, the screen looked fairly muddy. Even the blu-ray is tough to muddle through at times. The HDR on the 4K pushes the darkness even further, but it's more nuanced and you can see a lot of the details within the dark, and it's definitely an improvement.

The sequel "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" would address a lot of these complaints, because there was Godzilla and other Kaiju throughout the film, and everything was much more visible.

Paddington 2- both of the Paddington movies are really fun watches. I think they’re about on par with each other. I wouldn’t have guessed Paddington being in prison would have been the plot of the sequel but it does still work. Hugh Grant is good as the villain too.

Lured: Criterion (and YouTube) - Sassy Lucille Ball as an American dance hall girl in London who agrees to work for the police to catch a serial killer. Directed by Douglas Sirk. Has a funny bit with Boris Karloff as a crazed dress designer! Quite a bit of humor for a thriller. Great cast: Lucy, George Sanders, Charles Coburn, Boris Karloff, Cedric Hardwicke, George Zucco. Uneven pacing and the last half hour drags once they make the killer obvious. Had to be renamed Personal Column in the US because it sounded too much like Lurid.

Switchblade Sisters Arrow Blu-Ray
Robbie Lee, Joanna Nail. Directed by Jack Hill. 1975
The outlandish, action-packed story of a tough gang of teenage girls - the all-female Dagger Debs - who are looking for love and fighting for turf on the mean streets of the city! bad girls to the core, these impossibly outrageous high school hoodlums go where they want...and create mayhem wherever they go!

A deliberately sleazy and wildly over-the-top Exploitation film that's highly entertaining if you are a fan of the sub-genre. Of course, it's violent and nasty and way out of synch with Today's sensibilities. Jack Hill was a terrific director for low budget Drive-In fare back in the '70s, always getting good performances from his mostly unknown cast and creating characters with at least two dimensions. Arrow provides their usual quality presentation.

Braveheart Paramount 4K
Mel Gibson. Directed by Mel Gibson. 1995
Braveheart chronicles the legendary tale of William Wallace, a Scottish rebel who leads an uprising against the cruel English ruler, Edward the Longshanks.

This is my first time watching "Braveheart" since the days of laserdisc. I've kind of been avoiding it for some reason or another. Maybe it's the length, or that it's a grim Period film, or maybe it's that dull-ass cover that just screams "Big Action Film". I know in terms of Historical accuracy its mostly sentimental horseshit, but I found it an enjoyable blood-and-thunder epic. The late Patrick McGoohan was particularly noteworthy as the villainous "Longshanks".

The Invisible Man (2020)- pretty decent movie. Some good suspense and Elisabeth Moss is good as the lead.

Return of the Living Dead 3 Lionsgate Blu-Ray
Melinda Clarke. Directed by Brian Yuzna. 1993
Julie and Curt are sweethearts. But love turns into tragedy when a motorcycle accident kills Julie. Still devoted and heartbroken, Curt tries desperately to keep Julie alive by exposing her to Trioxin, a potent drug which brings the dead back to life.

“Return of the Living Dead” and its sequel were rather comic in tone, but “Return 3” is dead serious for the most part, no pun intended. It’s very much the kind of low budget “B” movie that lined the shelves of Blockbuster and ran late-night on Cinemax back in the day. It’s filled with (unrated) blood and gore, prosthetic make-up effects, and full-size zombie puppets and it’s a lot of fun for Horror fans. While it drags a bit in the middle, the last twenty minutes are so friggin’ over-the-top it more than repays you for your patience.

Listening to Sussudio all week to get in the mood

I know the ending was intended to be ambigious but I think it was all in his head?

Whenever he said something crazy almost nobody reacted and nobody found a corpse for Paul Allen.

Disney +

It was not as bad as I thought but it was not great either but passable entertainment for a Sat night and a relief it was not 2 and 1/2 or 3 hrs like the typical Marvel movie.

I like to think an actors politics don't enter into my viewing but Mel Gibson is such a piece of shit that I make an exception. I will never watch any movie of his.

Sonic The Hedgehog Amazon Prime 4K
James Marsden. Directed by Jeff Fowler. 2020
Sonic tries to navigate the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound best friend -- a human named Tom Wachowski. They must soon join forces to prevent the evil Dr. Robotnik from capturing Sonic and using his powers for world domination.

A few months ago, I would have never thought I'd be watching the "Paddington" films (and enjoying them!), and now I'm following up on a recommendation and watching the first "Sonic". Better made and more entertaining than I thought it would be.

Darkman (1990) — Seen this one a few times over the years and while some scenes were really cheesy due to the visual effects of that era, it still is quite entertaining and solid performances from Neeson and McDormand even with some of the overly dramatic dialogue especially from Neeson. Fine way to spend 90-minutes still. ***˝/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Notorious. Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Claude Rains. A party girl in 1946 is asked by The Government to seduce a German spy.

I completely missed the emotional nuances when I watched it years ago. The men from The Government feel contempt for her because of her sexual history, agent Cary Grant loves her despite of it, and the spy Claude Rains loves her and her sexual history never even crosses his mind. A great movie.

Peacock

I liked it but thought i would love it.

The final hour or 30 minutes kind of dragged with that backroom interrogation.

I thought maybe they would show both bombs hitting Japan but Nolan decided not to show that.

Now I know why Murphy looked frail since he lost weight for the role and first time I think Robert Downey Jr played a villian in a movie?

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Amazon Prime 4K
Jim Carrey. Directed by Jeff Fowler. 2022
Sonic is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

This feels like a much bigger production than the first film and the money shows on the screen. However, I really didn't care for it.

This is a much longer film than the first and spends a lot of time working through Sonic the Hedgehog game lore, taking it relatively seriously, while still throwing in some hit-or-miss jokes. I have only played the original "Sonic" game and was a bit bored with all this backstory. Perhaps this is how non-Comics readers feel about the MCU films.

It has a much different tone than the original "Sonic" film (which I only discovered yesterday), which was warmer, and more about having fun with the characters.

Marui Video (2023)

Although Director/Writer Yoon Joon-Hyeong's film is a competently made Found Footage Horror film, it lacks any sort of identity that sets itself apart from the hordes of films already present in the sub-genre.

Wish Upon (2017)

While I'm always up for interpretations of The Monkey's Paw (1902), Director John R. Lionetti's film is 91-minutes of unlikable characters doing absolutely stupid things.

Prospect (2018)

While the depth of the plot seems a bit limited due to the film's low-budget nature, Directors Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell churn an impressive Sci-Fi/Western hybrid.

Wonderful performances from Sophie Thatcher & Pedro Pascal, in addition to enjoyable production design, help fill in a few of the films flaws.

Galveston (2018)

Solid direction from Mélanie Laurent and performances from Ben Foster & Elle Fanning help this uneven but bleak film along for 94-minutes.
