Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing (David Tennant) performs various daring experiments on people who were diagnosed as mentally disturbed.

I never heard of this guy but liked him as a unconventional doctor

The Apostle Mill Creek DVD
Written, Directed by and Starring Robert Duvall. 1997
After his happy life spins out of control, a preacher from Texas changes his name, goes to Louisiana and starts preaching on the radio.

A labor of love for Robert Duvall, and a terrific film. While the film has a languid pace, Duvall held my attention every moment he was on the screen. The characters and the town are wonderfully detailed and feel authentic. It's a rare film about Faith that isn't cynical and isn't trying to sell you something. It's just a shame it's not been available on blu-ray in the US. It's currently only available on a double-feature DVD from Mill Creek. The picture quality is passable overall, with some scenes of better quality.

Sabotage 1936 - Criterion. Well constructed late UK Hitchcock that reflects some of today's paranoia. Has one suspenseful scene that Hitchcock admits was a mistake but surprised me. Obvious but still good villain.

I saw this in a revival house back in the day and someone laughed through the entire movie. Was that you? Wells was always over the top and he was here in a movie about decay. I liked the Marlene Dietrich scenes. Charlton Heston may be the worst casting ever but Dennis Weaver is great.

Suburbia

A bit disappointing, as far as Linklater films go. Not bad, just not as good as I had hoped.

The Puppet Masters Kino Lorber Blu-Ray
Donald Sutherland. Directed by Stuart Orme. 1994
The Earth is invaded by alien "slugs" that ride on people's backs and control their minds.

Generally entertaining film that feels, intentionally or not, like a bit of a throwback to Sci-Fi films of The Fifties. A bit overlong, though, and I wonder if this is another of those films that would be more effective in black-and-white. Good package of bonus features. Quite similar to Abel Ferara's version of "Body Snatchers", though for me that is the better film.

How did you know?

A lot of racism in the movie and like you said about Heston and he was playing a Mexican and that would not fly today.

Die Hard- my local theater is showing it for the thirty-fifth anniversary. A couple friends and I went tonight. Iíve seen it many times but awesome to see it in the theater. They truly just donít make movies like that anymore. Just an all-time classic.

Love Actually (2003) — Seen this one several times over the years and still so good, though the whole Colin Firth storyline didn't quite connect but cute nevertheless. Just a great ensemble — Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant were standouts — with plenty of heart and charm with risquť humor that doesn't get gross. Great movie for both Christmas and Valentine's Day. ****/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Hard Boiled 2 The Last Blood. 88 Films Blu Ray. This was a fun film to watch, and some of the action set pieces are a special kind-of crazy.
