Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse- first time seeing it since I saw it in the theater. Liked it a lot more than I remembered. Miles is great as are the other Spider characters. Fun movie.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Saw a 30th Anniversary showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Iíve actually only seen the movie a couple times in total. If Iím honest Iím kind of meh on it.

Maybe itís just because I donít have the nostalgia for it. The songs are good and I like the character designs. Thereís not a whole lot to the story though and it kind of bores me a bit.

Not a bad movie but also not one Iím likely to revisit over and over again. I know Iím in the minority and a lot of people obsess over it.

I remember when "Azkaban" opened in 2004, -when Imax was less common thing, -I was thrilled to hear that the movie was going to be shown at the St. Louis Planetarium on a legit Imax screen. I paid a little more, but it seemed worth it for the experience. I showed up an hour-and-a-half early on a Monday night (traditionally a "dead night" for theaters) only to find a crowd that showed up an hour-and-a-half before me. So, I didn't get an optimal seat, but the real problem was it was shown on the Planetarium's domed ceiling screen. As a result, the film was slightly curved, and I had to crane my head back to watch the film for two-and-a-half hours. It was a miserable experience, -a true pain in the neck, -and it ruined the film for me.

I have, of course, watched it a time or two since, and it's a solid entry that flows a little more naturally and feels less "Spielberg Light" than the Chris Columbus films.

I enjoyed Warner's 4K presentation of the film, which seemed more natural and less digitally sharpened. The HDR actually desaturates the colors a bit and makes everything more filmic to my eye, and the frequent dusk and night scenes are appropriately darkened and authentic. Much of it has an October feel.

My only gripe is the design of the werewolf, which just wasn't very impressive.
I remember this as being really good after the plodding Chris Columbus movies. Although I could follow the plot in those, having never read the books. From this point on I had to bring my son to the theater to explain it to me. I've no desire to revisit any of them but maybe if I get off my duff and visit them at the holidays we can have a retrospective.

In my opinion, "Highlander" gets a lot better once Sean Connery shows up, and, funny enough, -at least to my eyes, -the picture quality of the 4K disc improves greatly after that point in the film.
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. The casting is bizarre. There is a guy who can't speak English as a Scotsman and an actual Scotsman as a Spaniard. Although Clancy Brown is a great villain. There are climatic sparks and sword fights. Good fun.

I liked the TV show back in the day but it sure doesn't hold up today.

MIT students count cards and win big in Vegas. Tons of plot problems (he stores his winning in the ceiling of his apartment?) but ok fun. If you've ever actually played blackjack in Vegas it's even more silly. The overhead shots of Vegas and the casino action keep it moving.

King of Killers Lion's Gate Blu-Ray
Alain Moussi, Frank Grillo. Directed by Kevin Grevioux. 2023
Garan is a part of a group of international hitmen who are contracted to take out the most dangerous killer in the world, only to find out that they're the ones being hunted.

This feels like every film that was released during the pandemic. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's just so damned predictable and it's shot in this flat, perfunctory manner. To be charitable, perhaps this reflects the look of the comic series it's adapting, but it's just dull. With the notable exception of Frank Grillo, who is just money in the bank, the cast does nothing to generate any energy or interest in the story.

Infinity Pool Uncut Kanopy
Alexander Skarsgard, Mia Goth. Directed by Brandon Cronenberg. 2023
James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

I enjoyed Brandon's previous film "Possessor", which was the best "Cronenberg" movie I'd seen in a long while. It was very much in the spirit of his father as is this film, for better or worse. "Infinity Pool" has some intriguing ideas, bizarre, -sometimes queasy, -visuals, and characters I could not care less about. There are several David Cronenberg movies I could say the same thing about. Honestly, -and maybe it's just me, -but the most beaten-to-death trope in Independent cinema is the author who can't come up with an idea for his sophomore novel. Trust me, nobody cares.

Retribution Lionsgate Blu-Ray
Liam Neeson. Directed by Nimrod Antal. 2023
A bank executive receives a bomb threat while driving his children to school that his car will explode if they stop and get out.

A decent little Thriller from Nimrod Antal, who keeps things at an efficient 90 minutes. Liam's looking a little frail here, but it helps adds to his performance.

Did you like the ending or saw it coming or think it was a little over the top?

TCM

I have never seen it before and it will air again on TCM on Nov 16 if you want to set your DVR.

I thought it was good though I was not scared shitless and maybe the promos or photos of the creature were scarier than the movie.

I know Hollywood can't come up with new original ideas and remake the old shit over and over again but I would not mind if they did a modern day remake for this.

Spoiler:

I was a little unsure about the way the authorities treated Neeson throughout, but I figure you could say that's because they're in Europe. However, most of the scene with the Inspector once the kids were out of the car lacked some credibility, and his driving off to take things into his own hands ) and that he was even able to do it) was a bit of an eye-roller.

Universal had been trying to get a remake off the ground decades ago, -I believe both John Landis and Joe Dante respectively were anxious to do it back when they were "names", -but it just didn't happen.

The Earth Dies Screaming (D: Terrance Fisher). Before the credits, nearly everyone on Earth dies. A handful of survivors gather in a hotel and try to figure out what to do next. Then aliens in space suits start walking around. This movie looks a lot like a Dr Who episode. But if it's an imitator, it's a very early one. There might have been similar ideas. (YouTube)

"Wrath of Man". Again. Ritchie is hit or miss, mostly miss. But this was one of his top 5 best. Same with "The Gentlemen".

Love "Wrath of Man". It feels like Ritchie was channeling Walter Hill, with his terse, no-frills Tough Guy approach.

They're both great. I bought the 4K set and re-visited them not too long ago. I will say that I watched the extended version of "Deadpool 2" and while I enjoyed it, I think I'll stick with the Theatrical Cut.

A Haunting in Venice Hulu
Starring and Directed by Kenneth Branagh
Celebrated sleuth Hercule Poirot, now retired and living in self-imposed exile in Venice, reluctantly attends a Halloween sťance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

Kenneth Branagh won me over with his debut film "Henry V", and I hope for that level of quality every time, but that just isn't going to happen. I really haven't cared for his version of Hercule Poirot, which takes the fun out of the character and burdens him with a heavy soul and lots of close-ups of Kenneth looking grave. This third film in the series takes a different path than the previous films, and aims to be more of a Horror Mystery, with a mood evoked by strange camera angles and atonal music. The big "Let's Gather the Suspects" scene you're waiting for comes rather abruptly and certainly pays off your investment, but for the most part the film is just ponderous.

NYAD (Netflix) - at first I found this highly annoying but stuck with it and found it delightful. Go figure.
