Posted in the main thread for the movie already, but I watched Pearl tonight. What a crazy movie. I wasnít huge on X but this one really worked for me. Just a batshit crazy character and lots of intense moments.

House on Haunted Hill Shout Factory Blu-Ray
Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen. Directed by William Malone. 1999
Five strangers are invited to stay the night in an abandoned and supposedly haunted asylum.

This is a remake of William Castle's venerable "spooky" classic, but with a more modern, -and, of course, gorier, - approach. I had kind of forgotten I had bought this, but it seemed like an appropriate time to watch it. It seemed like a fun Halloween movie.

Honestly, it's not quite as good as I remembered.

I thought maybe it would not be in my wheelhouse but I was pleasantly surprised and want to see the next chapter.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) ó Good stuntwork as usual from this series and the performances were well done and nice seeing the return of Henry Czeny as Kittridge and filling in the gaps from the first movie and that deal made with Max. They did a decent enough job with a villain that was essentially A.I. by giving it a face with Esai Morales's Gabriel character, albeit compared with the others in the franchise, was pretty weak. And for Cruise, he's at home as Ethan Hunt while the rest of the team had their moments.

The only drawback is some of the dialogue, especially during the intelligence agencies meeting, felt stilted probably because it was basically exposition dump.

It's not on the level of the past few movies but still entertaining, just had hoped the splitting of two movies thing was over and done with or at least was made justifiable (like Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame), which I'm not sure it is here. ***ĺ/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Killers of the Flower Moon
Directed by Martin Scorsese 2023

It's a good film but it could have been a great film. It's just too damned long and it could have been far more impactful if it had been tightened up. For example, Lily Gladstone is very good as DiCaprio's wife, -a smart but vulnerable character, -but she just gets lost in the second half of the film. I also would have preferred a younger actor in DiCaprio's role. We follow the character over a span of years, and I couldn't buy him in as being in his twenties early in the film.

Targets Criterion DVD
Boris Karloff. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich. 1968
An elderly Horror film icon contemplates his relevancy, while a troubled young man expresses his inner turmoil by initiating a shooting spree.

A terrific low budget Thriller gets the Criterion treatment and it's a mixed bag. Peter Bogdanovich, working with his then-wife Polly Platt, begins an excellent run of films with a challenge from tight-fisted producer Roger Corman to turn two days of work owed to him by Karloff and twenty minutes of a mediocre Gothic Horror film into a successful feature. Bogdanovich created a unique film that combined a charming meta performance from Karloff with a chilling story based on mass murderer Charles Whitman.
Unfortunately, Criterion has restored the film with a revisionist color-grading featuring teal and orange and green that betrays the period the film was shot in. It's not that it ruins the film, it just looks a little strange to my eyes.
The disc includes a half-hour appreciation of the film by Richard Linklater and an audio Q+A with Polly Platt, as well as an introduction and commentary from the late director.

Scream (1996)

I've never grown tired of re-watching this film.

Appreciate any reason to dust off the Uncut Japanese DVD release I own.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I just re-watched Barbie on BD with a free Red Box rental yesterday. I liked it when I originally saw it in the summer. But, the second time around, I didn’t find it very re-watchable. It’s nice to look at, but just not something I need to see again and again. This will be a title that I pass on owning.

I watched all the bonus material and honestly it was just boring fluff pieces.

Marco, 12, is obsessed with his iPad and hardly leaves the house. However, when his grandmother dies and his grandfather moves in, Marco's life is turned upside-down.

If you were looking for that sentimental bocci ball movie this is for you.

The Black Dahlia Amazon Prime
Aaron Eckhart, Josh Hartnett. Directed by Brian DePalma.2006.
In 1947, two ambitious cops, Lee Blanchard and Bucky Bleichert, investigate the shocking murder of an aspiring young starlet.

I remember seeing this in theaters and being a bit disappointed. However, I'm a DePalma fan, and twenty years later, I decided I'd give it a second chance.
Unfortunately, the film still doesn't work for me. The cast doesn't generate any sparks, and while it goes for a "LA Confidential" vibe, none of it is very convincing. It feels like a missed opportunity.

My boy and I watched Pacific Rim... after 10 years it still holds up as a cheesy-cheese-fest with bad acting and big robots.

Alien Outlaw (1985) — Pretty dull for the most part but has a few good-bad gems here and there and Kari Anderson as Jesse Jamison, and her butt cheeks peeking through her skirt, was fun to watch I suppose. I'll have to watch the Rifftrax version one of these days. *Ĺ/***** (Blu-ray)

Diamonds Are Forever. These guys seem to be divisive characters. There have been gay henchmen before (The Big Combo) but I think this is the first time in a "Major Motion Picture". Is this the first Bond movie that leaned so hard into the comedy? Anyway I laughed a lot.

Paddington 2 FreeVee 4K
Ben Wishaw (voice), Hugh Bonneville. Directed by Paul King. 2017.
Paddington, now happily settled with the Brown family and a popular member of the local community, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen.

I never thought in a million years I'd watch a "Paddington" movie. The character was never part of my childhood. However, after the trailer for Paul King's upcoming "Wonka" broke, I heard some effusive praise for King's two "Paddington" films, and noticed the first one was available on one of the services. I watched it and found it charming.

The sequel is as fun and visually inventive as the first. It has a surprisingly good cast of noted British supporting actors and Hugh Grant continues his great run of "character" performances as the villain.

It will be interesting to see what Paul King does with Willy Wonka.

Has it only been 10 years? It seems like it's from an earlier time. From my notes at the time "I'm not sure if this was a movie or an eight year old kid with Godzilla in one hand and a transformer in the other smashing them into each other." Good fun
