Part of my Michail Caine retrospective. Meta before meta was a thing. I like Michael Caine and Christopher Reeves but I hate Dyan Cannon. She has her womanly charms but something about her (God bless her for her charity work and still kicking in her late 80s). The third act seems oddly prescient with "it doesn't matter if you’re a sociopath as long as you're famous".

Extraction 2 Netflix
Chris Hemsworth. Directed by Sam Hargrave. 2023
Tyler Rake takes a moment to recover from his death in the first film, but his retirement is short-lived, because this time it's personal.

In terms of story, this is as by-the-numbers as it gets, but Hemsworth is solid, the pace is good, and there are plenty of well-staged and relentless action scenes. It did, however, have me hoping for the on-screen death of a twelve-year-old boy.

Willow Creek (2013)

Out of all the Bigfoot/Sasquatch Found Footage films I've watched this month, Director/Writer Bobcat Goldthwait's entry is probably the best.

It's anchored by simple but effective performances from Alexie Gilmore & Bryce Johnson and a small handful of tense scenes.

Unfortunately, the film is a bit derivative and features a finale that might turn-off even the most hardened fans of Found Footage films.

The Medium (2021)

Considering that Director/Writer Bangjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter) & Director/Writer Na Hong-jin (The Wailing/The Chaser/Yellow Sea) were behind this film, it should have been ten-thousand times better than the end result.

The film is anchored by gorgeous cinematography in addition to a wonderful performance from Sawanee Utoomma but it's overly-long and delves into a disappointing amount of genre tropes.

Xtro 3: Watch the Skies (1995).

Outside a few instances of enjoyable FX work, this is a rough 97-minutes that have no connection to the previous films in the series.

The Boogeyman Disney/Twentieth Century Blu-Ray
Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina. Directed by Rob Savage. 2023
High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren't getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.

I'm always a bit leery of Horror films rated PG-13, so perhaps I came into this with the wrong attitude. This just seemed very run-of-the-mill to me, and I couldn't get invested in it at all. Disney doesn't seem all that invested in it either, as they slapped it on the disc with no bells and barely a whistle.

The Owners (2020) was an interesting movie. I'm not sure what I was expecting based off the description but it ended up being different than I thought it would. I would say it's worth watching once.

Quicksand (2023)

Director Andres Beltran's film would've been a smidge better had it not been for a pair of unlikable leads.

For similar films, I would recommend Buried (2010), Open Water (2003), 47 Meters Down (2017) & The Shallows (2016) long before this one.

Testuo: The Iron Man (1989)

Although I'm still not a fan of the final 15-20 minutes, everything before it is absolutely unhinged in the best ways.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I'm traveling for work and was just mindlessly clicking around on streaming services and landed on Hostiles, the Christian Bale/Rosamund Pike/Wes Studi movie from 2017. It was pretty good but very bleak and downright brutal. Definitely worth checking out if you like Last of the Mohicans, Centurion and 3:10 to Yuma (which I do).

It was bad enough watching Melanie Griffith act but then she also provided the narration.

Did the director and the editor watch the dailies and wonder maybe this does not look right?

It took me completely out of the movie and still wonder how she got all those big roles back in the day?

MGM +

I would see it show up a lot on my Directv guide but never bothered to watch it but it was not that bad.

I was surprised Jack Nicholson was in this and should have seen it a lot sooner.

It is still weird William Hurt is no longer with us

A different kind of wrestling movie

Saúl Armendáriz, a homosexual amateur wrestler from El Paso, Texas, rises to international stardom when he creates the character Cassandro, the `Liberace of Lucha Libre.' He upends not just the macho wrestling world, but also his own life.

I liked it and Bernal was great in this and worth a watch and highly recommend.

Prime

"Jane sheds her mundane life to experience romance, comedy, tragedy and existential crises on a surreal road trip."

Gillian Jacobs was good not that she is ever bad but it might not be for everybody.

I liked the Grabber Blue Mustang Mach-E she drove in the movie.

"A criminal mastermind decides to pull one last job before going to prison and recruits a group of young bank employees to steal millions in a daring and brazen assault on the U.S. banking system."

At first I thought it was a pilot for a new series

It did not receive great reviews but I was into it and enjoyed it

Babylon 5: The Road Home Warners Blu-Ray
Bruce Boxleitner. Written by J. Michael Straczynski. Directed by Matt Peters
Travel across the galaxy with John Sheridan as he unexpectedly finds himself transported through multiple timelines and alternate realities in a quest to find his way back home. Along the way he reunites with some familiar faces, while discovering cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe.

I was (and remain) a Babylon 5 fan and this animated film is pretty much for the fans: I can't imagine it working for someone unfamiliar with the property. This is one of those "unstuck in time" stories that allows the lead character to briefly revisit almost all of the characters and situations associated with the series and harvest an acre of 'member berries. I found it more a collection of scenes than a strongly structured drama, though there are a lot of very nice scenes.
The animation is satisfactory for the most part, about on a par with the DC direct-to-video movies, but it's the voicework by the surviving cast members that sells it. Bruce Boxleitner is particularly good in his featured role. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski peppers his script with playful, amusing banter and the character exchanges are a lot of fun. In the end I was left with a smile.

Barbie Warner Bros. Blu-Ray
Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling. Directed by Greta Gerwig 2023

There are a lot of clever moments, as well as some others I couldn't quite hear over the constant beat of the sledgehammer. I thought the moment where Barbie meets her creator, Ruth Handler, was quite poignant, and a great moment to go out on, but then Gerwig decided to exit on that lame gynecology joke.

The Professionals 1966. Good action movie at the start(?) of the Western revision trend. Easily eclipsed by The Wild Bunch a few years later but still has Lee Marvin with a machine gun. I liked it better than Pauline Kael who said it was so professional it felt like "a cold old whore with practiced hands and no thoughts of love".

Haunted Mansion Disney+ 4K
Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson. Directed by Justin Simien. 2023
A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion, after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.

I was kind of hoping for something with a pulse, if you know what I mean. Not helping matters was my 4K stream (which can be hit-or-miss anyway), which was unusually dark and muddy throughout. Obviously, the problem could be as much on my end as theirs.
