Showtime

2014

Ostracized at her new school and grief-stricken over her grandmother's death, a 10-year-old girl (Makenna Ballard) learns about persevering in the face of inevitable change from an irascible chessmaster (F. Murray Abraham).

It was ok for a Tues night

Janeane Garofalo played Macchios wife?

WTF?

F. Murry Abraham was suppose to provide the comic relief but almost none of his lines were funny.

Showtime

Fearing the apocalypse, an insurance salesman (Clayne Crawford) embarks on a solo hunting experiment, only to face a traumatic incident.

The acting was great but to me a forgettable movie though a lot of the critics it seemed liked it.

I wanted to like this or maybe I was distracted but could not get into it

Maybe might give it another chance in the future.

Peacock

It had some laughs here but went overboard with the pee and dog crap jokes.

Now I am less inclined to buy a dog

Also most of the dogs were ugly except the sheep dog.

Amazon Rental. I had no knowledge of the story but thought it'd be fun for my wife and I since I love Simon Pegg and she loves all period pieces. Fun due to the cast but otherwise a pretty dull story.

Transit Amazon Prime
Jim Caviezel, James Frain. Directed by Antonio Negret. 2012
A gang of bank robbers hide their loot in the car of a family going camping. They chase down the family to kill them and get the loot back but run into a fight.

A short, tense Thriller. It has a very "contrasty" look, emphasizing "black crush" and the color green. My only quibble is director favors tight, tight close-ups that crops the tops and bottoms of all the sweaty faces, or perhaps the film is improperly matted and should be seen in 1:85:1 rather than 2:35:1.

Inside Amazon Prime
Willem Dafoe. Directed by Vasilis Katsoupis. 2023
A high-end art thief, Nemo , who becomes trapped in a luxury, high-tech penthouse in New York's Times Square after his heist does not go as planned.

Survival stories are a tough watch. If they're effective, the viewer almost feels like they're trapped along with the character, living with them as their physical and mental health dwindles away.
This is very much an "Arthouse" version of a "Survival" flick with a lot of commentary on Life and Art and it certainly wants to hit you between the eyes with its final shot. Dafoe delivers a fine performance, but I found the film grueling to watch. I wish I had been a bit more receptive because it clearly wants to be something more than what it appears to be on its surface.

Psycho. I remember seeing it at age ten or so, and having no idea what was going on in the first scenes.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Paramount Blu-Ray
Anthony Ramos. Directed by Steven Caple Jr. 2023
Noah, a sharp young guy from Brooklyn, and Elena, an ambitious, talented artifact researcher, are swept up in the conflict as Optimus Prime and the Autobots face a terrifying new nemesis bent on their destruction named Scourge.

I was too old, -by a lot, -for the "Transformer toys or TV series, so I have no built-in nostalgia for them; for me, it was simply a movie property. I didn't care for Michael Bay's first "Transformers" film because I felt his hyperactive directing style, -which I generally enjoy in occasional doses, -really made the giant robot fights hard to follow. There was also a sort of pandering "dumbness" with a lot of the characters and storylines. Funny enough, I gave "Bumblebee" a chance, -seeing it in the theater, no less, -and really enjoyed the film. I was going to see "Beasts" in the theater as well, -bought my senior discount tickets and everything, -but the underwhelming reviews gave me cold feet and I cancelled.
Turns out that was the right decision. The human characters weren't the least bit engaging for me, and I really couldn't get interested in the robot storyline at all.

Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon Shout Factory Blu-Ray
Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals. Directed by Scott Glosserman. 2006
A true self-promoter, Leslie Vernon gives documentary filmmaker Taylor Gentry and her crew exclusive access to his life as he plans and executes his next great reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.

I bought this title a long time ago during a Shout! sale based on a recommendation, but the unwieldy, undramatic title and mediocre sleeve art always made me push it to the bottom of any stack of titles I was considering watching. My mistake. It's a clever well-made film that neatly treads the line between Spoof and Legit Horror, with a lot of easter eggs for perceptive fans. Good performances from Baesel and Goethals. Shout! provides a nice package of "Bonus" materials.

I enjoyed the meta aspects, the buddy comedy, and the inside Hollywood Easter eggs. As someone who voted against the SAG AFTRA merger I especially enjoyed "The only organization I'm part of is the Screen Actors Guild…and Aftra but I'm not really sure what that is"

Snatch Sony 4K
Jason Statham, Brad Pitt. Directed by Guy Ritchie. 2000
Unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.

Yet another film I haven't re-visited since the DVD days. Fun London Gangster story from Guy Ritchie, with one hell of a cast. The 4K video is sharp, but I'd forgotten that the film had something of a desaturated look with colors that deflate rather than "pop". Unfortunately, the "Extras" haven't been updated since its DVD days.

The Runner (2022)

As a short-film, Boy Harsher's (Jae Matthews & Augustus Miller) directorial debut isn't all that interesting.

As a long-form music video showcasing the duo's music, it reads much stronger.

Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes (2012)

As a Found Footage film, Director Corey Grant's film is surprisingly well-made.

Although it tries to up the ante in parts of its narrative, it tends to remain comfortable re-using tired genre tropes throughout its run-time.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

I've always enjoyed this film, warts & all.

It was wonderful getting to see it screened in an actual theater for it's 20th Anniversary.

Exists (2014)

Director Eduardo Sánchez's (The Blair Witch Project) Found Footage film doesn't lack Sasquatch appearances but it falls flat on everything else.

The film would've been a bit more enjoyable if it weren't for its thinly-drawn main characters.

House of 1,000 Corpses (2003)

Love re-visiting this film.

It's a shame Director/Writer Rob Zombie doesn't make films like this anymore.

XIII (2019)

Even though this English Found Footage film is severely limited by its budget, it still delivers a moderate amount of chills & atmosphere, due to the staging in its main location.

Not a terrible way to spend 46-minutes.

Wrong Reasons MVD Visual Blu-Ray
Liv Roush, James Parks. Directed by Josh Roush. 2023
When an ambiguously intentioned masked man kidnaps a drug addicted punk singer, it triggers a police investigation as well as a media circus.

This is a low-budget first feature from a Kevin Smith associate (he's filmed documentaries for Smith's recent films) and Smith is an investor in the film. It features Director Josh Roush's wife in a lead role and the cast features many familiar faces from Kevin Smith films like "Clerks 3" and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot". It's a sincere effort to make a drama for a nickel-and-a-dime, and I really don't want to crap on it. The lead performances by Liv Roush and James Parks are good, while the rest are serviceable. However, the story lacks a certain dramatic energy that makes for compelling viewing. I wish the film had focused on the back-and-forth between the kidnapper and the singer, -finding and exploiting the dramatic tension there, -rather than spending so much time with the detective on the case, and various news crews chasing a story and trying (and not always succeeding) to find black comedy there. As with most Kevin Smith-adjacent films, there's a lot of "Bonus" material that gives a lot of information about the film and its production.
