After Hours Criterion Blu-Ray
Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1985
A Manhattan office worker has the worst night of his life, -a paranoid odyssey, - after he agrees to visit a girl in Soho he met that evening at a coffee shop.

I was a big fan of Martin Scorsese, -"Taxi Driver" is in my permanent Top Ten, -but I didn't see "After Hours" until it showed up on VHS. I've got to say I wasn't crazy about it at the time, -don't know why- and I wasn't really inspired enough to view it again. However, I've just re-visited the film with this new Criterion presentation, and I've got to say it seems both very familiar and yet a whole new film for me. I really appreciated the filmmaking and the performances this time. Funny enough, I was frequently reminded of Ari Aster's panic -riddled "Beau Is Afraid", and I wonder if "After Hours" was an influence. The picture quality is terrific, and the supplements are exceptional.

2021

Free on Roku but be prepared for a 2 hr movie with all the ads even though it has a 92 minute running time

Jaymole was right and this was a great film.

A rare leading role for Stephen Graham who excels as a supporting or character actor but should get more leading roles and a crime it was ignored at the 2022 Oscars.

I think I would go bonkers if I worked at a restaurant with all that stress.

Starz

Watched it the first time but did not remember a lot and the second time it was just meh though I like Denzel and Travolta they could not save this movie.

I have not seen the original but it got better reviews than this version.

The original is a classic of its type in my opinion. The remake adds a redemption arc for Denzel's character (he took a bribe), and an unlikely chase scene at the end, rather than the film's simpler and more credible undoing of the bad guys.

Cinderella Disney 4K
An excellent disc. It's much more filmic and textured in this 4K release rather than aggressively "clean" and digital. The HDR adds a lot of "light values" to the film (different levels of light and shadow) which gives the animation more dimension. There's a nice picture-in-picture feature on the included Blu-Ray version: It recreates (from transcripts) conversations between Walt Disney and his creatives breaking down the story of the film, accompanied by layouts, storyboards, photos from the rotoscope shoot, and more.

To Catch a Killer Vertical Entertainment Blu-Ray
Ben Mendelsohn, Shailene Woodley. Directed by Damian Szifron. 2023
A cop is recruited by the FBI to help track down a murderer.

Make no mistake, this is a Procedural, the type that you can find on Television fourteen times a day, seven days a week. On the other hand, this is a very good Procedural, with a fair amount of blood, sincere performances, and a certain amount of depth. The picture quality is good, but otherwise this was just dumped on the disc, with no supplements and just a menu screen. And whoever designed the cover needs to apologize to Shailene Woodley.

I want to see this again sometime without buying the disc but would probably buy it after I watch it again.

I always get it confused with Into the Night the Jeff Goldblum movie.

Child 44 - Tom Hardy plays a State security agent in the Stalin-era Soviet Union, and Noomi Rapace plays his wife. There is a solid supporting cast including Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, Paddy Considine, Vincent Cassel, and Charles Dance. The movie is ostensibly about the hunt for a serial killer, but that story doesn't really come into focus until well after the halfway point. More time is spent on the perils of living in the paranoia-filled, dystopian, Soviet police state.

Yeah, I was reluctant to buy "After Hours" outright, since I would have bought the 4K version. However, I was able to borrow the blu-ray from my county library. I was impressed enough that I might buy the 4K sometime down the road.

Blue Beetle
Overall, not a bad little film, though you might as well wait for it to hit Max. I found the "young hero comically stumbles as he tries to learn his powers" trope a little too familiar, but Xolo Mariduena has a lot of charisma as the lead. A lot of the scenes are darkly shot, -much like "The Little Mermaid", -and if you're not seeing it on a "premium" screen, it can appear rather soft and muddy at times.

Shin Ultraman Cleopatra Blu-Ray
Directed by Shinji Higuchi. 2022
After the accidental death of a human during battle, Ultraman takes on the man's appearance and place at the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol to protect Earth from further threats.

"Ultraman" debuted on the local UHF station back when I was in grade school. It was a bit like having a new "Godzilla" movie every day and a welcome break from cartoons and old sitcoms that were usually playing in the afternoons. Of course, "Ultraman" was aimed at a young audience, and had a lot of Juvenile campy aspects to it that my friends would make fun of, and I'd make excuses for. This is a re-boot of the property, -a feature-length film, -and it does a nice job of updating the property while being true to the original. It loses some of the more cornball aspects of the original series, while maintaining an "All Ages" feel. It has a clean digital look, -very digital, in fact, - that can be compelling at times. It's not deep, but it's not bad.

I watched the original Man on Fire (1987), which stars Scott Glenn and is based on the same source material as the 2004 version. It's available on the Starz app.

This was not good. The 2004 version with Denzel far surpasses it. Way better movie. Also, this movie has a very unsatisfying end.

Glad I didn't blind buy this from Kino Lorber.

Maybe I liked the artwork and it was available at a great price at Amazon

It is ok though the acting is poor and subpar and Will Smith is not exactly the greatest singer either.

Not of This Earth Shout Factory DVD
Traci Lords. Directed by Jim Wynorski. 1988
An ailing alien hires a live-in nurse to tend to him during the day, while at night he hunts for human blood.

This is a spoofy update of Roger Corman's original 1950's thriller. This is a film that was shot very fast and on the cheap (there was a bet between Wynorski and Corman), and it sort of wallows in its cheesiness. I think it could have been much compelling if they'd cast a different actor as the alien "Mr. Johnson" - someone low-key and sinister and fun to watch. This was Traci Lords first mainstream film after her (mostly underage) Porn career and she's actually not bad. According to Wikipedia Traci has managed a fairly healthy mainstream career in the years that followed. The film is mild fun, particularly if you have fond memories of it from back in the day. Shout Factory provides a new interview (circa 2010) and commentary with Traci Lords and Jim Wynorski.
