One False Move…what a great little slow burn thriller of a movie. Very pleased. Great performances by Paxton, Beach, Thornton. Nice little Criterion Blu-ray.

Netflix Disc rental

A lot better than John Wick 3 though it is really long.

Joe Burrow really had it for Wick except
Spoiler:
in the end he did not put up much of a fight and was done after one gun shot.

I own this

A rare movie about the Revolutionary War and it seems like the war that Hollywood does not care compared to all the World War II and Vietnam movies that have been made.

Maybe Revolution with Pacino in 1985 was the other one but don't remember a lot.

One of the rare movies where John Williams did the score for a director not named Spielberg or Lucas.

The Meg 2: The Trench
"The Meg" had its ridiculous moments, but I found it entertaining. The sequel seems like two films mashed together. The first half is a hijacking of the research station and Statham and Co.'s escape through the trench of the title. I found a lot of this section hard to follow because of the red filters applied and certain directorial choices. The second half is the generally comedic, -hell, its damn near slapstick, -assault of the deep sea creatures on a vacation island. I just found the whole thing sloppily written and disorganized.

Kandahar Universal Blu-Ray
Gerard Butler. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh. 2023
A CIA operative and his translator flee from special forces in Afghanistan after exposing a covert mission.

Gerard Butler has been turning out one or two movies a year for a while now and they've generally delivered solid entertainment. I found this one slightly less effective. It tries hard to be sensitive to current political situations and develop its characters but it's all pretty familiar stuff and the been-there done-that of it all wasn't very engaging. Overall, I was disappointed.

Real Genius (1985)

This was a regular VHS rental from the neighborhood video store for me back in my teen years ... still enjoy re-visiting it. Picked up an 'International Order For Gorillas' t-shirt the other day, as well ...

Wham! (2023)

While it avoids many of the issues the band encountered during their meteoric rise, it remains an absolutely nostalgic and breezy viewing.

i like the actors but this was really boring and a pointless remake of the 1994 movie which was a lot better.

That is Deborah Foreman, Jeff. She has a small role in this film but delivers one of the movie's best lines. She was the female lead in one of my other 80s favorites, Valley Girl. Both of these movies had the same director (Martha Coolidge). If you haven't seen Real Genius yet I'd suggest checking it out ...

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Fast X (2023) — I've more or less enjoyed the Fast and the Furious franchise though with each installment, the writers attempt to go further in its goofiness from the previous movie, it's becoming harder and harder to really be entertained, not to mention care one iota about these characters. I will say Jason Momoa, in whatever he was doing, was a hoot in the cold-blooded villain. And in typical "Fast" fashion, there are scenes that don't make a lick of sense. I found some of the action scenes to be well directed I guess by journeyman Louis Leterrier who took over from Justin Lin who left only a week into production.

Given I wasn't that big of a fan of Fate of the Furious or F9, I think I've grown out of this franchise and would be a good thing to bring it to a close. **½/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Viking Wolf - a Norwegian werewolf movie (currently on Netflix). Starts kind of slow, then picks up in the second half.

Netflix

Ed Skrein a name I recognize from other movies.

Maybe a litte sentimental but that is ok though the music sounds like Coldplay light.

Cinemax

I liked it though I thought I would love it but I liked a Few Dollars More more than this and it was really long and not a lot of action or gunfights and more of a Eli Wallach movie than a Clint or Van Cleef flick.

Smokin' Aces Max
Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds. Directed by Joe Carnahan. 2006
Sleazy entertainer Buddy "Aces" Israel agrees to testify against the Las Vegas mob and a motley assortment of bounty hunters, hit men and nefarious vixens converge on his Lake Tahoe encampment to rub him out and collect a hefty reward.

"Aces" was Joe Carnahan's follow-up to his terrific debut film "Narc", and I found it disappointing. The script seems heavily influenced by "The Usual Suspects" with a plethora of "colorful" crooks, cops, and killers, and a byzantine plot with a big twist at the end. Carnahan fills the cast with names and recognizable supporting actors, all probably doing two-days' work. However, the film's style is so loud and aggressive and most of the characters so cartoonish that only the few scenes where it takes a breath really landed for me.

Meg 2: The Trench (2023)

Unnecessarily long and not as fun as the first film.

The last act does slam in a bunch of B-Movie fun & nonsense but by then it doesn't feel like the reward it should be.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

I enjoyed this film quite a bit but didn't love it in the way that many critics have been.

On the positives, the art style is a welcome direction as are the soundtrack choices & cues (especially Ol' Dirty Bastard & Blackstreet) and appearances from characters I only remembering having as action figures (Leatherhead, Mondo Gecko, etc.)

I also very much appreciated the film's willingness (early) to speak on the loneliness the Turtles felt, even being so young, a theme I wished stayed potent throughout.

When the film is fun, its a blast but when its dull, is absolutely dull.
