2000

Cinemax

Centers around five up-and-coming habitus: a photographer, a fashion designer, an obsessed guitarist, a depressed, struggling songwriter, a talent manager, and a rock star for the moment.

It had Jared Leto and Judy Greer but was still a boring movie

Hulu

There was not one big name or anybody I recognized in the cast but the movie was not bad at all and worth a watch.

Fear The Night Hoopla
Maggie Q. Written and Directed by Neil Labute. 2023
Iraqi war veteran Tess prepares for a reunion with her sisters during one's bachelorette party. When the party is interrupted by a group of home invaders looking for a hidden fortune and hellbent on not leaving any witnesses, Tess must take matters into her own hands.

Neil Labute tends to create angry, antagonistic characters and this film is no exception. The first half of the film is all set up, and we spend that time with characters that are constantly arguing and sniping at each other. It's a bit like a pissed-off Lifetime movie. The second half is when the "home invasion" begins and it does give the film a needed surge of adrenaline. However, LaBute takes a fairly grounded approach to the attack/counter-attack structure that follows and that sometimes plays a little flat. There's never that clever little moment you're hoping for in something like this. There's also a twist in the epilogue which is so poorly set up that it left me frustrated.

Sharksploitation (2023)

Although it drags quite a bit in places, I can't imagine a documentary about the Sharksploitation sub-genre & ocean conversation being much better than this.

In addition to a deluge of information presented, the film's strengths are in its interviewees, who are varied yet remain interesting throughout.

Barbie (2023)

While the film is a bit uneven, its glamorous visuals, humor and overall message are fantastic.

Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling are wonderful here.

God Is A Bullet (2023)

Maika Monroe & Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are fantastic but the entirety of the film feels like Director/Writer Nick Cassavetes' vessel for slathering as much misogyny as he can in an absolutely bloated 156-minutes.

HBO

2018

Fresh out of prison, a Scottish woman (Jessie Buckley) juggles her job and two children while pursuing her dream of becoming a country music star. She soon gets her chance when she travels to Nashville, Tenn., on a life-changing journey to discover her true voice.

The first time I saw Jesse with long hair and maybe this was her breakout role?

Breakout Mill Creek Blu-Ray
Charles Bronson, Robert Duvall. Directed by Tom Gries 1975
A bush pilot (Bronson) is hired for $50,000 to go to Mexico to free an innocent prisoner (Duvall).

One of those films I always wanted to watch but never got around to. More of a "Caper" film than an intense "Escape" film, but entertaining, nonetheless. Bronson doesn't appear until the second act, but he's livelier and more engaged than in many of his later films. Also featuring Randy Quaid, Sheree North and John Huston. Pretty decent picture quality for Mill Creek.

The Valachi Papers Mill Creek Blu-Ray
Charles Bronson. Directed by Terrence Young. 1972
Sentenced to 15 years in prison, former mob "button man" Joe Valachi turns informant when he learns top Mafia capo Vito Genovese has put a $100,000 contract out on his life.

"Valachi" followed closely on the heels of "The Godfather" but it couldn't possibly match its depth of drama or its production value. It uses Joe Valachi's life story to tell a fairly familiar crime story about one man's ascension in the Cosa Nostra and his eventual downfall. This is another of Bronson's better performances. The packaging says it's the domestic "PG" version, but based on all the blood-spurting shoot-outs, a graphic castration (well, not that graphic), and the nudity, I think this might be the saltier European cut.

The Stone Killer Mill Creek Blu-Ray
Charles Bronson. Directed by Michael Winner. 1973
Top detective Lou Torrey is transferred to Los Angeles and uncovers a plot by a Sicilian mafioso to use Vietnam veterans to murder all his enemies on a single day.

This is in many ways a routine '70s Cop Movie, with all the shoot-outs and foot pursuits and car chases you could ask for. However, the plot that holds the film together isn't presented in a compelling way; it just plays like an excuse for all the mayhem. A few years later, Bronson and Winner would make "Death Wish", which became a signature film for both of them.

Netflix streaming

2016

It was in my list but since he passed this week I decided to check it out.

It was not LOL but maybe a new appreciation for this since it was probably the last time he would ever play the character?

They should have made the Joe Manganiello his long lost brother and that could have led to more laughs.

Dolls Arrow Blu-Ray
Directed by Stuart Gordon. 1987
A group of people stop by a mansion during a storm and discover two magical toy makers, and their haunted collection of dolls.

"Dolls" goes for a tongue-in-cheek Fairy Tale approach (both grim and Grimm) with some broad characterizations that mostly works, though some of the gorier scenes seem out-of-sync with the tone for me. When I first saw this back in the video store days, it was a bit of a let-down since "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond" were freakier, rule-breaking Horror films, and this was a bit more conventional. Re-visiting it all these years later, it seems a much more solid effort and Gordon really knew how to deliver on a lower budgeted effort like this. There's some really nice technical work bringing the dolls to life.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Live and Let Die (1973) - Roger Moore's first outing as James Bond is set largely in New Orleans and a fictional Caribbean island where the villain, Dr. Kananga (played with gusto by Yaphet Katto) is growing poppies and planning to take over heroin trafficking to the States. Within the first few minutes of this movie, you realize this Bond film is trying to cash in on the popularity of blaxploitation movies at the time. The cast is largely black aside from Bond, recurring ally Felix Lighter, and Kananga's pet fortune teller 'Solitaire' played by the beautiful Jane Seymour. Kananga also has three memorable henchman: 'Whisper' who, well, whispers; 'Tee Hee' who has a metal claw-handed prosthetic arm; and 'Baron Samedi' the voodoo* priest with a spooky laugh (played by Geoffrey Holder aka the 7-Up commercial guy).
Overall, a decent effort though not among my favorites of the Bond franchise. Moore fits into the role of Bond well from the start, but I think he develops a bit more swagger in later movies. It's a nice looking film and the costume department especially deserves praise. Though the biggest impact from this movie is probably the iconic title song by Paul McCartney.

*And by the way, this movie reminded me how frequently voodoo was used in movies back in the 70s/80s as a theme to give the story a spooky and dangerous feeling. Stuff like The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Believers, that one Steven Seagal movie...
