The Dentist (1996) — Not the movie to watch before visiting the dentist. Not the strongest script but the horror elements were great and Corbin Bersen was a lot of fun, a stark contrast to his roles on L.A. Law and Psych. ***/***** (Blu-ray)

After Midnight - low budget thriller/horror/romance. started out interesting, but kinda drags on too long and then throws a WTF scene in at the very end. Could have been a decent 30 minute tv episode or short film, but didn't really feel worth its 83 minute runtime.

Back in 1992 when you could get movies in this genre at the theater and when the main leads or their doubles would show their tits and nude bodies.

Now Hollywood is soft and you rarely see nude scenes anymore.

The hairdo that Bridget Fonda had still looks goofy and does not hold up.

The critics did not like it and it bombed but I don't care and thought it was pretty good.

It was long and maybe they could have trimmed some parts.

Maybe Taylor Swift was the only weak link in the movie.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Jackal (1996) — This is one I've seen several times over the years and while certainly not great and it is funny hearing Richard Gere with an Irish accent and the numerous hair changes with Bruce Willis, I still find it watchable and somewhat entertaining.

That said, how the Jackal was written was a problem because while for most of the movie he's a cold-blooded and calculating character, his actions of going after Isabella was strange to do in the midst of planning an assassination versus going for revenge (which itself didn't make sense) after he completed his mission and got paid, and that's not to mention giving away his true target with a line about Declan unable to protect his women, though even then not sure how Declan came to that (albeit correct) conclusion. Probably just lazy script writing.

However, there are some cool shots (in the days when they used helicopters for aerial shots compared to using drones) and the direction from Michael Caton-Jones was solid. ***/***** (Blu-ray)

HBO

I was not expecting much but pretty decent for a Mon night movie.

Hirsch and Cusack were pretty good and I was into the story and the characters.

Me and the critics liked it at Rotten Tomatoes but not audience score was 63%.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Finished the Lukas Moodysson boxset...Still have to delve into the special features, which are plentiful, but for now...

F**king Amal - Released in North America as Show Me Love. The set starts off with a bang, as this is probably the best movie in the set. A great, kind of low-key coming-of-age tale about two girls falling in love. It avoids cliches and comes across as very tender...and fairly realistic. The bullying scenes are played very true to life, as is the general cruelty of kids in middle school/high school. The film deals with trauma but not in an overbearing or melodramatic way. The acting by the two leads is first-rate, as is the set design. I must've been the same age as the two leads when the film was made, as many of the clothing and bedrooms look right out of the life of people my age. The N64 Controller. The Scream movie poster. The Morrissey poster. The Zero and other skateboard brands throughout. And the music is very "of it's time" (Spice Girls and whatnot). Just a really touching movie with a great, uplifting ending that can't help but put a smile on your face. Loved this movie, and understand why it was so acclaimed when it was released.

Together - Great follow-up set in a commune in Sweden. Lots of the film deals with children's dissatisfaction and/or disappointment with parental figures. It's another movie that walks a fine line between drama and comedy, deftly managing to balance both. The acting, once again, is great. Especially the kids. The one girl reminds me of whatever actress played the young Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums. It's great that she doesn't know she's being funny cause she just gives off these weird, kind of "disappointed" looks to the camera and they're hilarious and priceless. The film ends on a wonderfully upbeat note, too, which is great. Lot's of the movie emphasizes the importance of family and relationships in general, largely playing off of similar themes from the short film, Talk, that's also included on the set. That deals with an old, retired widower who is out of work and just desperate to communicate with someone, even complete strangers. His character shows up in this movie and is a great addition.

Lilya-4-ever - Moodysson takes a different approach here, making an almost cinema verite movie about a teenage girl abandoned by her horrible mother and left to fend for herself in some state in the former USSR. It's a thoroughly depressing but well made movie about how she is eventually tricked into become a child prostitute in Sweden (apparently largely based on a true story). The story is somewhat undercut at a certain point by some kind of supernatural elements that remind me of a certain Wim Wenders film. Nevertheless, the acting is extremely impressive, as is the filmmaking in general. There's several instances where the movie just punches the viewer in the gut and you just sit there in stunned silence. Still feel the final third isn't as strong as the previous segments, but I can't deny the fact that this is a pretty great movie. Definitely dark, but if you can stomach the story, you'll find the experience enlightening.

A Hole in My Heart - Here's where Moodysson loses me. Like, anytime I've ever uttered the words, "This has to be the worst movie I've EVER seen," well, I was wrong and I owe each and every one of those movies an apology, for this is the WORST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN. I can barely describe it. Something about some people attempting to shoot some porn movie in their apartment while the director's adult son looks on. This movie is depraved and stupid and has no plot whatsoever. It is intellectually vacant and pointless and anyone arguing that this movie has any depth whatsoever is lying. I almost make it a point to never award a movie a 0/10 (if I were rating movies), but this movie fully deserves that rating. Nothing is redeeming about this movie. It is offensive (but NOT in a smart or engaging way) and just a complete waste of time. I stuck it out and finished it largely so that I can tell other people that they don't have to. This movie is that bad. Nothing is good about this movie. I'm not joking.

Container - I almost wanna say I spoke too soon, but this one is not quite as bad as the previous flick. It's still awful, and a complete waste of time. A stupid-ass montage set to some idiotic stream-of-consciousness and totally inane dialogue (in the English version read by Jena Malone, but I listened to the Swedish narrator), once again a movie lacking any sort of plot or even reason for existing. Just an intellectual exercise by someone with too much time to think and pontificate about life and feel that their every thought is deep and profound. Now I am still a fan of Moodysson overall, but even one has to admit when he goes astray. This and his previous movie are indicative of that. This movie is brutally bad, and apparently at some point it did so bad in theatres (in Sweden, anyway, which is probably the only place it got to be released in theatres) that they basically shifted strategy and just showed it in art galleries playing on a loop, over and over again. Apparently only true artistes could understand it...Oh well, the movie sucks.

Mammoth - Moodysson returns to traditional storytelling with his first large budget flick starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Michelle Williams. Well, you can't go wrong with the acting; it's terrific. The storyline however, is meandering and doesn't really seem to know where it's going. Furthermore, whereas in the past Moodysson would kind of at least give some sort of indication of when certain characters were making poor decisions or had a lack of judgment and were punished for it, here he seldom judges his characters and it just seems like a lot of their actions have no real point or meaning. There's many dramatic scenes in which there's actually no real sense of drama, because the characters decisions have no consequences or bearing on the plot. It's a weird movie. Visually very well shot. Acting is first rate. The odd harrowing scene here or there, but ultimately adding up to nothing. I think the ending is meant to be cathartic but it's really not. The viewer just kinda walks away going..."Huh...okay..."...

We Are the Best! - Moodysson adapts his wife's graphic novel and tells this relatively tame tale about some middle-school girls attempting to be punk rockers in the '80s. Kind of charming, to an extent. Moodysson once again proves how deft he is with casting and dealing with child actors; they all give very, very good performances. But the movie isn't that engaging. Neither very funny, nor very dramatic. It just kind of passes by. It was an okay way to spend about an hour-and-a-half, but I honestly can't say I'd recommend this to people unless their choices were limited to like this and some of Michael Bay's Transformers movies or something as bad...Then I'd say choose this one...

All in all, I know the latter half of the boxset is not nearly as good as the first three films. BUT, given the sheer amount of special features (along with a great, great 200-page book + a book of Moodysson's original poetry) and the sheer quality of those first three films, I'd still recommend this one if you can snag it for like $100 CA. I paid $130 CA so I'm a little pissed (Amazon lowered it like two weeks after I bought it, which is pretty typical these days), but whatever, I've wanted to see these movies for years. And no joke, F**king Amal and Together are amazing movies, with Lilya-4-ever just a slight notch below, even though it is tonally completely different than his first two movies.

And I hear he's finally making a new movie, a sequel of sorts to Together, which supposedly comes out this year. Would love to check that out, and glad I had the opportunity to see these prior to it's release. Are those two movies in the middle of the boxset that bad? Yes. Yes, they are that bad. But overall that accounts for one disc in the boxset. So? I guess when some of the other movies are so good, I can let that pass...

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

After delving through the Moodysson set over the course of 3 nights, I also watched these:

Shazam! - Better than I expected, but still kind of par for the course in terms of DC Movies, in that it's merely adequate. Thought the plot was kind of clever and Mark Strong made a decent bad guy. Zachary Levi was good but I can imagine that his schtick might get more and more annoying in larger doses. Mainly watched this cause I've been seeing ads for the sequel and thought they looked good so I figured what the hell? It was streaming so whatever...Still think it's way better than any of the Snyder DC movies (hey, I'm not a complete Snyder hater by any means, I actually loved his takes on Dawn of the Dead and The Watchmen), but I know I'm in the minority on that one...

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - Another streaming movie. The Rock's thing is wearing thin with me. Essentially the same in every single movie he does, albeit with the "child-like" aspect, which he seems to ditch willy-nilly throughout the movie whenever he sees fit. The Jack Black character was interesting but they didn't do nearly enough with it (teenage girl in a man's body)...Had it's moments but overall not very good. And honestly, a Jumanji movie without Robin Williams? Like, you're never going to succeed...Damn I miss that guy...

Eraser - Crumby Arnold movie that I liked when I was like 10 but now see so many plot holes it's ridiculous. And the effects are crap. And the acting (even from Caan and Coburn) is pretty bad. This movie has not aged well. Heard they released a Direct-to-Streaming sequel and I had it queued up but I think I'll delete it now...I have better ways to waste my time...

I think I had the Jumanji sequel in my DVR since 2019 but never got that excited to watch it since I was not a huge fan of the first movie.

Cinemax

I wonder why I waited so long to revisit this.

I don;t know why it got bashed in the reviews but I enjoyed it.

Granted there are not a lot of likeable characters though this is one of the rare Richard Gere movies I cared about though he was just one of 3 central characters.

Is it the best film Marvel Studios has ever put out? No.

Was I thoroughly entertained for 124-minutes? Yes.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 - Good movie. Watched it several times. Wished the actors weren't so egocentric that they complained about the writing and directing in the special features documentary. Maybe they were just horrible, horrible actors/actresses. They may not have considered that. But, according to them, they were on par with Brando and Olivier. Apparently it was largely the script and director that took away from their "natural talents."

Lux Æterna (2019)

While the 51-minute film isn't Director/Writer Gaspar Noe at his most aggressive, it remains interesting throughout due to performances from Beatrice Dalle & Charlotte Gainsbourg.
