Old Man AMC+
Stephen Lang. Directed by Lucky McKee 2022
When a lost hiker stumbles upon an erratic old man living in the woods, he could never have imagined the nightmare that awaits.

This is another entry in the sub-genre “Stephen Lang is a scary old bastard” (see the “Don’t Breathe” films). The film essentially comes across as a one-act play, with two characters interacting in a single location. McKee’s direction and Lang’s character and terrific performance keep things involving and suspenseful.

The Lair Shudder
Charlotte Kirk. Directed by Neil Marshall. 2022
When Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair is shot down over Afghanistan, she finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons - half human, half alien - are awakened.

Neil Marshall has directed some great films, -“Dog Soldiers”, “The Descent”, -as well as two terrific episodes of “Game of Thrones”. On the other hand, there was the "Hellboy" reboot (2019). Charlotte Kirk is apparently his current muse (as well as his fiancée) and she also gets a Producer and Script credit on the film. Marshall seems to be looking at Kirk as his “Mila Jovovich” and casts her in the film as an Action Heroine.
Unfortunately for me, I just don’t think Kirk has the necessary something and she’s the weakest part of the film, -particularly in the first third of the film, which focuses primarily on her. That being said, once “Lair” kicks into gear and becomes a “Siege” film (a night-time attack of monsters against the soldiers) Marshall is able to show off his skills and deliver a tense ride. There’s nothing new here, but it’s expertly edited and extremely effective.

Showtime

Probably a little slow but excellent performances by Dale Dickey and Wes Studi

Armageddon Time
Directed by James Gray. 2022

This could best (but unkindly) be described as James Gray's version of "The Fabelmans", -a thinly-disguised autobiographical coming-of-age story of a creative kid caught up in his family's Drama. Maybe I'm getting old, -Hell, I am old, -but for the first fifteen minutes I just wanted to smack this kid around for his deliberately annoying behavior. Then there's the rest of the family with all their tension and negativity and actors giving BIG performances. The grandfather is supposed to be the voice of sanity, -a warm presence, -but this is another case where Anthony Hopkins seems to have wandered in from some other film. Frankly, I just grew tired of all the hollering and the oppressive negativity and ejected the blu-ray.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Rogue (2007) - a group of tourists in the Australian outback are terrorized by a giant crocodile. As far as these 'killer animal' movies go, it's not bad. Nothing amazing, but there are some pretty tense scenes and the croc is menacing enough. The movie is not as big (or as tongue-in-cheek) as Lake Placid, for comparison, but the smaller scale works for it.
The real surprise for me once I started it was the cast. Radha Mitchell, Michael Vartan (fresh off of ALIAS), Sam Worthington, Robert Taylor (from the series Longmire and the Matrix movies), and a young Mia Wasikowska in one of her first film roles.

The Father…sad, but so well fine and so real. I’ve experienced this and this was spot on. Well done. I think Hopkins deserved. He was great.

I have the unrated cut. Always loved this one.

The kid did look kind of feminine in the beginning but overall I liked this movie

I have not seen the Fabelmans but it seemed like it would be in the same wheelhouse with another Jewish family.

I heard there is another movie called "The Son" which I think is a prequel to the Father and I want to see that too.

2008

Sony Movie Channel

Val Kilmer is a Iraq veteran suffering from PTSD and battles a bunch of people in a hick town.

At least he should have gotten a chance to bang Jennifer Esposito for all the trouble he went through.

Starz

Willa Fitzgerald is hot but if you are looking for a Watergate comedy check out "Dick" from 1999 instead.

I have that on Blu-ray but have not watched it probably since 2012 or 2013 but maybe will revisit in the Summer.

I browsed through a book about the movie before it came out at Waldenbooks in the early 80's.

Robocop (1987) - I saw this in theaters back in the day, and watched it again once many years ago. It still holds up as a commentary on law enforcement, capitalism, and corruption. And it's entertaining!

Fear (2023)

Even without previous knowledge, Director/Writer Deon Taylor's film was clearly made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It would be easier to ignore the film's obvious limitations if it was entertaining, which it is not.

Infinity Pool (2023)

While I didn't enjoy this film nearly as much as Director/Writer Brandon Cronenberg's previous film Possessor (2020), its anchored by another nutty performance from Mia Goth and another interesting wrinkle in the Cronenberg Body Horror Film Archive.
