Top Gun: Maverick (2022) — Really solid action-thriller with amazing stunts and pulls on the heartstrings without feeling forced. Tom Cruise is great as usual and Miles Teller was fine though didn't feel like he had enough time to shine, but his scenes with Cruise were good. Jennifer Connelly has aged really well and they did nice service for Val Kilmer's Iceman. Really solid, entertaining old fashioned blockbuster. ****/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Ghost of Mars (2001)

Everything about this film feels lazy & cheap.

Luckily, there are scenes of decapitation

Errementari: The Blacksmith and The Devil (2017)

Outside the main character (Francisco Paxti), I didn't care enough about anyone else for the plot to hold much weight.

Cinematography is fantastic as is the FX work.

Bones and All (2022)

Runs a bit too long due to Director Luca Guadagnino lingering a bit longer in shots than necessary.

The film understands when it needs to be grisly and is anchored by fantastic performances from Timothee Chalamet & Mark Rylance.

Netflix rental

It was ok though kind of long.

Maybe not worth buying on Blu-ray.

I don't know if real trains are as luxurious as the one shown in the movie but I would prefer that over air travel.

Showtime

Decent and did not rely on fart jokes or raunchy humor.

Netflix streaming

From Riley Stearns the director and writer of the Art of Self Defense.

It had a interesting premise and probably Sarah is the ideal DVDtalk giirlfriend who watches porn and eats fast food.

The Ice Storm (1997) Ang Lee film

I own this.

Recommend for family viewing

I liked how they captured the feel of the 70's and probably one of Ang's best films ever.

Maybe looking back could the Christina Ricci character be a child molestor?

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

God Said Ha! (D: Tarantino) Standup comedian Julia Sweeny does a show using material from her recent life. The material is how her brother got cancer and moved into her house, her parents moved in to help, and then she got cancer too. I thought it had a good balance of pathos and humor, but Mrs Danger thought it was a little difficult to watch.

Richard Jewell (D: Eastwood). I remember the original events of the movie. A security guard found a bomb at the Olympics, he was accused of planting the bomb himself, and only months later did the government concede that he was innocent. He went through hell and I knew people who still thought he did it. We both liked it.

In this movie, the FBI are assholes. In The Mule, the DEA are assholes. Am I noticing a theme about Eastwood's attitude toward the federal government, or is it a coincidence?

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I spent the holiday visiting my parents, so it was time once again to watch some old movies I'd never heard of that my dad recorded on TCM.

First up was The Mackintosh Man (1973), starring Paul Newman and James Mason, and directed by John Huston. It's a spy thriller set in England, Ireland, and Malta. It was an interesting watch--I was never quite sure where it was going. Some of the location shots looked really nice, and there was a good car chase scene through the Irish countryside.

Next up was a weird little movie called Roadgames (or Road Games) from 1981. It's a thriller set in Australia starring Stacy Keach as a wise-cracking truck driver who likes to quote poetry to his pet dingo. He becomes obsessed with the driver of a mysterious green van, whom he suspects is a serial killer that he has been hearing about on the news. A young, fetching Jamie Lee Curtis plays a hitchhiker that Keach picks up along the way. The tone of the movie starts out kind of comical, but becomes darker as a cat-and-mouse game ensues and Keach's character descends into paranoia.

Epix

Not a big fan of romance movies but this was not bad and beautiful cinematography of Hong Kong at night.

Apparently Bryan Greenburg and Jaime Chung are a couple in real life.

Love and Leashes. A Korean rom-com that involves whips and collars in a workplace romance. It's an entertaining bit of fluff, and I don't generally like rom-coms. It treats BDSM positively, and includes vignettes of characters enduring abuse or nonconsent. (Netflix streaming).
