Those torture scenes were hard to watch.
The alternate ending (which I think has become the ending), -where no mercy is given by Caesar, -really elevated the film in my estimation.

Hawaii Amazon Prime
Max Von Sydow, Julie Andrews, Richard Harris
In the late 1800s, arrogant missionaries go off to bring Christianity to the Hawaiian natives they viewed as savages.

One of those 60's era widecsreen "Epics" I never got around to seeing. The film has been adapted and greatly edited from a sprawling novel and the movie itself has been edited down from its original three-hour-plus original version, leaving some distracting jumps in the narrative. I was surprised at how much "toplessness" there was in a pre-ratings Hollywood movie from the mid-Sixties. The lead character (one of Von Sydow's early American roles) is astonishingly unsympathetic and cruel; I was expecting some kind of redemption, but he was pretty much unlikeable throughout. The film really is kind of a drag.

Cuba Gooding Jr is in it so it is a must see

Sucks they never showed the girl in the poster in that outfit but overall a forgetabble movie you would expect to see on Showtime or Cinemax at 3am.

I liked it and great performances by everybody in the cast and would have no problem if any of them win Oscars.

Forgettable

In some scenes you can tell Kate had some plastic surgery done and her lips don't look right.

I own this

Joaquin was great as usual in a performance that was overlooked.

I think this was the movie he did before he had that phase where he grew a beard and showed up on Letterman for that doc he did with Casey Affleck.

Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021)

Fantastic and fairly thorough (3+ hour) documentary on Folk Horror from Director Kier-La Janisse.

Would have loved those sections of Asian Folk Horror fleshed out even more.

Amazon Prime

I liked the cast but got lost and never really held my attention.

What happened to Tommy Lee Jones? Is he retired?

He was all over movies and the cinema in the 90's and early 2000's and then disappeared.

IDK, seemed to have steady work through the mid 2000s, including Criminal, Jason Bourne and Mechanic: Resurrection (all 2016). Plus Ad Astra in 2019. I assume work slowed down the last couple years due to the pandemic, would think someone in their mid-70s and nearing the look of a skeleton wants to avoid a movie production as possible.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

I know there's a lot wrong with this, but there's a lot right with it that make it a sentimental favorite.

It was but had the potential to be really good or great and a shock it was not with David Mamet involved.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I recently got Netflix thanks to my brother and I have been watching films that are only available on Netflix. So far these are the films I would give an 8 or higher out of 10:

The White Tiger
System Crasher
Prayers for the Stolen
The Crimes that Bind
Photocopier
Oxygen
Trial of the Chicago 7
The Girl
American Murder

Amazon Prime or IMDB for free

I think more like a Sikh and not a Hindu friend?

A must see if you are a Dafoe fan but might not be for everybody and for MA audiences only with a lot of nudity.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Prince of Broadway (2008)

For one reason or another, we get a lot of hollow, soulless movies these days. Sean Baker seems completely determined not to make a film like that with Exhibit A being Prince of Broadway. As with his other movies, Baker looks at the fringes of society; in this case, it's the hustlers who work in the wholesale district of NYC. Baker in the DVD extras talks about how he wasn't able to get any co-operation out of actual stores that sold knock-off goods (for obvious reasons), but he nevertheless manages to create a fictional store that feels completely authentic.

'Authentic' is the word I'd use to describe this movie as a whole. The end credits mention that the cast improvised a lot of their dialogue, which would explain why it sounds so true to life. There are precious few parts of the story I'd point to as being contrived; the movie, especially with Baker using a hand-held camera throughout, seems like a documentary rather than a piece of narrative fiction.

The cast consists of complete unknowns, many of whom are first-time actors. In the lead role is Prince Adu as Lucky, a hustler who looks, sounds, and acts like the real thing...probably because he is. (Baker is rather coy about Adu's background in the behind-the-scenes documentary.) Eighteen-month-old Aiden Noesi as Lucky's baby (or is he?) is remarkable given his age and his complete lack of awareness of the camera that's constantly pointed at him. The toddler behaves like you would expect such a young child would, and—for the folks who couldn't stand the kids in The Florida Project—he's impossible not to fall in love with.

This would be my updated ranking of Sean Baker films I've watched:
  1. The Florida Project
  2. Tangerine
  3. Prince of Broadway
  4. Starlet
  5. Red Rocket
Because I've enjoyed Baker's movies so much, I broke down and ordered the DVD of Take Out when I wasn't able to find it at the local library or on streaming. Can't wait to see it.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Last Night in Soho (2021) — Not a big fan of Edgar Wright compared to some (fine filmmaker but don't get excited when a project of his is announced; and to be fair, same really goes for Christopher Nolan as well lately), but this one does feature some good 1960s-era music and the performances from both Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy (whom I am a big fan of) were great and some fun mind-twisting scenery and visuals, though in the end felt it was fine as whole. Worthy of a watch, though. ***/*****

Got Dune (2021) from Redbox last night. It was pretty good. The production was great, but the tempo was a bit tooooo sloooow.

I am excited for the sequel in October 2023.

One of the worst movies of 2021

Another really long boring Disney movie that makes a fortune at the box office and was made by a focus or marketing group with a soundtrack of songs played a billion times in other movies.

The Master (2012)

Very atypical character study anchored by fantastic performances from Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman and dazzling cinematography.

Definitely isn't for everyone but I enjoyed it!
