Mortal (2020) - An English-language Norwegian sci-fi fantasy movie about an American who visits relatives in Norway and starts to develop strange powers that he cannot control. A therapist tries to help him and they go on the run from the authorities. Not bad, though it follows some familiar tropes and the ending was predictable. (currently on Amazon Prime video)

The Unforgivable - Netflix drama starring Sandra Bullock. It was okay, though from the description I was expecting a thriller and it was more of a just-out-of-prison drama with a little bit of suspense at the end.

The Empty Man - great, spacy, cosmic horror neo noir detective story that only rarely resorts to modern horror jump-scare tropes. High creep factor and well worth a watch.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Past two days I've watched
Oldboy: For a remake this was quite good, Brolin and Olsen were great and while not as messed up as the original I still felt kinda ookie watching this version too
Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World: I haddent seen this since I was about 13 when this first came out and I enjoyed it alot back this, but this time it felt kinda slow going and tedius.
Underwater - I didn't expect this to be a Cthulhu movie and it took me 2 years to watch this but Stewart did good, the atmosphere and tension were great. I really enjoyed this
Millions - Absurd and predictable but fun, not Danny Boyles usual fair but its just lighthearted and quirky.
The Proposal: Standard rom com fair but its got some funny moments and Reynolds and Bullock work well together
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty: I knew nothing of this going into it and I was really surprised by how fun and different this was. I look forward to seeing it again

Encanto Disney + 4K
The animation is terrific (in particular the character animation), but I'm glad I didn't see this in a theater. The story was underwhelming, more of a vignette in some larger, more satisfying work.

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel HBO Max 4K
I tried watching the original version of "The Outsiders" back in the VHS days and just couldn't get into it, -the performances just felt a little too self-conscious (particularly Matt Dillon) and just distracted me from the story. I read about the "Complete Novel" re-edit coming to 4K UHD and the reviews tempted me to try it out on HBO Max; after all, many, many years have passed and tastes change. Nah ... I still have the same problems.

tick, tick ...Boom Netflix
This Musical follows Jonathan Larson on the cusp of his 30th birthday as he struggles with life and love and trying to make it as a composer. Larson would eventually compose "Rent" but would suddenly die before seeing his tremendous success.
I came into this with reservations about Garfield, but he's just terrific here, utterly convincing. The story of a struggling composer is pretty basic, -you've seen it many times before, -but the songs are energetic and well-staged

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

We watched
Encanto
last night. Really liked it. It was a musical so yeah, without the songs it would have been a much shorter tale. What it said, I thought it said very well.
Before that,
Matrix Resurrected.
A hearty "meh" on that one. Not sure it it was too meta, or just hard to follow the original groundbreaking movie. Or just not very good.

Disney +

Usually I don't like these sappy Disney family movies but this had Dafoe and was the exception and it is pretty good and worth a Watch.

Watch it now in the Winter and if you have snow like conditions or it is cold and don't watch it in the Summer since that would be lame.

HBO

I thought maybe since this came out in 1991 it would bring back some nostalgic feelings but this was a turd.

Ethan Hawke did a lot of good movies but this was not one of them.

Playing with Fire (1975) — I hate these surrealistic, artistic BS movies and this one just was a pain to sit through. There's not even anything interesting going on visually and the acting pretty mundane (or maybe that was on purpose). Some pretty faces (and bodies) but as a whole is a movie that is patched together to confuse rather than challenge. *½/*****

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Silence: Mostly a Quiet Place ripoff but Kiernan Shipka did good,
The Call Of The Wild: I put off seeing this knowing it was just a cartoon with occasional life action people, but it wasent terrible but nothing ill ever revisit
The Rebel In The Rye: Great movie about JD Salinger and it shows how he teetered on the edge of excentricness and Ptsd
Breathe: Andrew Garfield is really a under rated actor and he did fantastic in this, Its a very sweet and well made movie but the ending hit me in the feels
The Air Up There: Haddent seen this since I was a kid and it played on the Disney Channel. Bacon does good and its got its fun moments but its forgettable
Ghostbusters Afterlife: Loved it despite having Finn Wolfhard who i hate. I am not a fan about the ending and how someone came back but thats the future of hollywood for ya. It a much better and enjoyable sequel then i ever expected from it

Wind River: We were kinda blown away by this film; the plot was strong and the undercurrents & message on how to handle the death of a child (of anyone) still resounds this morning. See it.

Breaking In (1989) — Okay drama-crime-comedy featuring two fine performances from Burt Reynolds and Casey Siemaszko and while the crime elements were fun, the drama part was a bit bland. Nothing I'd watch again but might be worth checking out especially if you're a Reynolds's fan. ***¼/*****

Epix with Tony Hale and Anna Camp.

You would think a comedy based of the people who got suckered in that Orson Welle's War of the Worlds radio broadcast would be filled with non-stop laughs

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Testament - brutal and sad but I think it's alot better then the Day After

Operation Dumbo Drop - it was fun, definitely shows it's a Disney movie but plays as a fun time.

Home Again - quirky but it Witherspoon wasent in it nothing would have drawn me to watch this

Minamata - it's a shame Depp's been cancelled because this movie was really fantastic. It's so sad but everything about it I thought was well made

Color me Kubrick - I can't tell if this was good because it's true and because of how stupid everyone involved was or just because it's so ridiculous

The Bling Ring - I gotta hand it to the teens they robbed the dumbest celebs ever because evidently they don't lock their doors
