^The original Spanish film, "REC," is even better, IMO, though Quarantine is a pretty faithful remake, IIRC. REC also has a few sequels.

Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Denis Villeneuve. Kind of slow but tense, filled with a sense of dread and paranoia. I found it unsettling and engrossing and I plan to watch it again soon.

Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge (1989) — Has a couple moments and decent kills, especially during the finale, but otherwise pretty bland 1980s horror take of Phantom of the Opera. I did like the lead (Kari Whitman) well enough (though thought her friend, played by Kimer Sissons was cuter) and can't say I was terribly bored, yet doubt I have any interest revisiting. Kind of blends in with most of the horror films that came out of the 80s. **½/*****

Demons 2 (1986)

Lacks so much of what made the Demons (1985) fun.

The characters are completely one-dimensional and lifeless, with Bobby Rhodes being the most animated. Though he's essentially playing the same role he did in the previous film.

Outside one particular transformation, the demons don't look great in this one either. Everything looks slap-dash, as if they were dressed to be a background demon for the entirety of the 88-minute run-time.

Mr Majestyk. A workmanlike Charles Bronson action movie which held my attention to the end. Script by Elmore Leonard. Now I know who invented the curse word "melon-farmer." It also uses "melon-picker," but that didn't catch on. (Tubi)

Vertigo (1958)

Wonderful film anchored by fantastic performances from James Stewart & Kim Novak.

Appreciated James Stewart's ability to make a hard right turn with his character in the final act.

Destry - old western starring Audie Murphy. Apparently it's a remake of Destry Rides Again, of which there are two earlier versions, one of them with Jimmy Stewart.

Apocalypse Now: Theatrical Cut (1979)

To be completely honest, I can't remember the last time I re-watched this film as an adult.

One of the greatest films ever made, anchored so many fantastic performances, especially from Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall & Marlon Brando.

Loved the obvious analogies to the River Styx, which is only driven home by Vittorio Storaro's haunting cinematography.

Contact (1997) — Random viewing but decided to finally watch after its been in my to-do bin for a while now. It didn't strike an emotional cord that I thought it would but Jodie Foster was quite good as were a respectable supporting cast. Never quite bought into the relationship between Foster and McConaughey though in fairness, probably due to the lack of screen time together (felt like maybe 15 minutes in a 2.5 hour movie). Some of the effects were alright for its time including integrating Clinton footage with the cast and the sci-fi specific visuals were alright. In the end, never was bored and found it to be entertaining. ****/*****

Beyond The Door III (1989)

Originally titled Amok Train but re-titled to piggyback on the success of Beyond The Door (1974), this film is one-part satanic sect, one part killer train.

The film is goofy as hell with fun FX work.

I'll admit that I laughed more than the film probably intended for its audience to.

Bloody New Year (1987)

The film feels twice as long as its 93-minute run-time but its kitchen-sink approach to Horror is entertaining.

I appreciated never knowing where it would go next (similar to a funhouse), even though it wasn't always the most coherent film.

I saw Contact at the theaters. Later, I remember talking about it with a co-worker, and he was really pissed off about the scene near the end when she was on the alien planet, and when the alien appeared, it took the shape of her dad. He went on a rant about lazy film-making. While I agree with him that it was lazy, the intensity of his dislike of that scene was so surprising.

The Possessed (1965) — Watched this as part of a Giallo Essentials box set released by Arrow and while it's not at all bad, in fact some excellent black and white cinematography, the story is a bit slow in developing however not sure I'd classify this as giallo (at least compared with those I've seen so far, maybe this was a different style), this was a film noir mystery. However, performances were decent and as a whole found it engaging enough. ***¾/*****

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City (2021)

Thought the movie was average, even with my expectations tempered.

Enjoyed the first 30-40 minutes of the film, as well as many of the visuals & set-pieces, as they were closer to the aesthetics of the Video Games.

Thought the use of Jennifer Paige's song "Crush" was hilarious, as was Jill's (Hannah John-Kamen) joke about giant snakes & sharks

After all of that, I didn't care much, as the film consistently felt like fan-fiction.
