Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
P.J. Kino Lorber
George Peppard, Raymond Burr. Directed by John Guillerman.
A down-on-his-luck New York private eye takes a bodyguard job for the death-threatened mistress of a shady millionaire and gets involved in conspiracy and murder.
A solid Private Eye movie with a Retro-Cool Jazz score by Neal Hefti, featuring lot of familiar faces from ‘60s Television. This was a surprising lurid and violent film for its time, and Universal Studios created a sanitized alternate version that has played on Television for many years. George Peppard is a great cynical tough guy and Raymond Burr makes a memorable return as a bad guy after years as “Perry Mason”. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s well worth looking up.
The Karate Kid Tubi
Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith. 2010.
I’d avoided this film for some time but I decided to give it a shot. It’s not really all that bad but it just doesn’t have anything to make it particularly memorable. Transplanting the story to China adds a lot of exposition (and running time) to the film and doesn’t do it any favors.

Despite being a longtime Looney Tunes fan my whole life, I never saw the original Space Jam.
Since we’re discussing the new one for a podcast I’m on, I wanted to see the original first and it was an absolute chore. The animated bits were pretty fun and mostly in character but any live action bits were like dental surgery without anesthesia.

Hulu
I liked it and both leads gave great performances and I would recommend.

I thought since it has been awhile I would give this a second chance but it is even more horrible after a second viewing.
I wonder why Slater decided to be in this turd?
I have seen better acting in Lifetime movies.

^ I remember that one. It was awful.
One Crazy Summer (1986) — Liked this quite a bit. The humor is right up my alley with the absurd mixed with the traditional (kind of reminds me of Caddyshack in a way). John Cusack's style was great and although admittedly didn't have great chemistry with Demi Moore, I did laugh enough that I had a good time. Just an easy-going film and a perfect watch to end the summer. ***¾/*****

Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). That year's Best Picture winner, a big budget movie where you can see the money on the screen, shot in Polynesia with real sailing ships, starring Charles Laughton as a great villain who gives cruel orders without ever making eye contact, starring Clark Gable as a handsome man, co-starring real Polynesian women as the Hayes Office-approved chaste temptresses. Neither of us could really get into it.

The Cat o'Nine Tails (1971) — Okay giallo movie from Dario Argento has its moments and fine performances from James Franciscus and Karl Malden, but the end wasn't exactly satisfying. Still some entertaining scenes here and there. ***½/*****

Mrs Miniver. Greer Garson was great as a woman who rises to the occasion when Britain goes to war against the Nazis. It's wartime propaganda, but it's really good propaganda. It worked on me, and the war ended 75 years ago.

The Case of the Scorpion's Tail (1971) — Entertaining crime-mystery features some fine performances, most notably George Hilton whom I only recognized from a couple westerns I recently watched. The ending wasn't bad though the killer was a bit of a dumb ass with easy ability to escape and disappear but still on the whole this was satisfactory. ***¾/*****

Jolt - Kate Beckinsale as a badass with impulse-control problems. Very stupid, but kind of entertaining.

Not a big Saw fan but maybe once in a while it is ok to watch it since Chris Rock and Samual L. Jackson were in it.

They could have done a better job with the packaging where you are taking out discs from cardboard sleeves and probably putting scratches on them at the same time

I bet Harmony Korine was probably touching himself filming that opening scene.
James Franco chewing up the scenery.
I bet even with Francos transgressions you could not make this movie today or people would find something to get upset about.

It had some cool scenes but mostly forgettable and not a lot of likeable characters in this movie.

I'll never understand that kind of packaging when you can easily just put it in a standard 3-hub Blu-ray case... Hell, I'd take stacking them over the cardboard sleeves.

The Score HBO Max
Robert DeNiro, Edward Norton. Directed by Frank Oz. 2001
A top safe-cracker plans “one last job” but must rely on a sketchy new partner.
This is a solid “Heist” film, and the rare Hollywood film that embraces that it was shot in Canada. Good performances from DeNiro and Norton, and twenty years later it still holds up.
The Protégé Theatrical
Maggie Q, Michael Keaton. Directed by Martin Campbell.
An accomplished assassin goes on a mission of Revenge when her surrogate father is murdered.
This is ….competent. As I watched the film I could not help but wonder how many hands this script passed through, and what the original idea was. Maggie Q was certainly not the first choice for the lead, and 70-year-old Michael Keaton is an odd choice for a hitman requiring intense physical scenes and as a potential love interest for Maggie. The rest of it features interchangeable locations and motivations that could be molded to who and what the production was given to work with.
GI Jane
Demi Moore, Viggo Mortensen. Directed by Ridley Scott
A female Senator succeeds in enrolling a woman into Combined Reconnaissance Team training where everyone expects her to fail.
Ridley Scott brings a lot of style and bravado and but Demi Moore is more formidable than engaging. There’s never a question about how this is going to play out; in fact, I surprised how much it seemed to use “Top Gun” as a template. Entertaining, but not something I'll visit again.
