Get Smart (2008) - It's not a great movie, but I've always had a soft spot for it. In fact even though I'm fairly certain it would have been terrible I'm disappointed we never got a sequel. (MA)

The Reckoning (2020) — Has its moments but didn't quite do it for me, especially with some of the cheesier moments (when our main character hallucinates the demon or devil), and the musical cues of Sean Pertee's religious judgeship is way over-the-top. But I did like Charlotte Kirk in the lead, even though for basically the entire movie her hair and makeup looked excellent, and some of the direction by Neil Marshall was okay. Could have been way better. ***/*****

It was not bad and I am not a huge Western fan but a different take with Hanks and Paul Greengrass at the helm.

Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021)
Definitely flawed but loud & fun. I enjoyed it a bit more than its predecessor.

Zodiac (2007) — A great character driven crime-drama with wonderful performances from Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo and Downey Jr. Been a few years since I last saw this one but decided to give it a re-watch (seen it I think five times now including the rated version in theaters and then DVD). Even though it's 2.75 hours, never gets dull and is engrossing through and through, even if the conclusion might not be accurate. ****½/*****

Space Truckers Amazon Prime
Dennis Hopper, Debi Mazar Director: Stuart Gordon
A Light-hearted Space Opera from 1996, very much in the vein of the UK's "2000 AD" Comics. the tone is very tongue-in-cheek and the production design is impressive for it's budget and filled with color. Not all of it works, but enough of it does.

Irma Vep (1996) — I'm not exactly steeped on French cinema, let alone 1990s French cinema this apparently targets, but still highly enjoyed this surreal drama with some good direction and fine performances from Maggie Cheung playing a version of herself and Nathalie Richard. Some interesting scenes, especially one at a dinner and another with Cheung sneaking around her hotel in a catsuit. Don't quite understand it all but still thoroughly found it entertaining. ****/*****

I like a movie set in the snow but with little dialogue it is hard to stay interested though Mads did a great job.
A open-ended ending?

Island of Terror Shout Factory BD
Peter Cushing Director: Terence Fisher.
Cancer researchers on a remote Irish island unleash a horde of bone-eating silicate creatures,
Really terrific monster movie from the mid-60s that plays strictly by the numbers, -dedicated scientist Hero, his quippy side-kick, the beautiful girl who always has to be saved, -and is a lot of fun because of it. This is a good old-fashioned monster movie (but probably just for old guys like me) that takes itself seriously enough that the monsters "work" even though they look ridiculous.

The Innocents (1961). Victorian governess Deborah Kerr takes care of two odd children in a giant country manor. She realizes that the children are haunted by ghosts. Something is very wrong, but it may not be supernatural. The Innocents is a moody, slim on plot, B&W Cinemascope movie for people who like horror that's suggested rather than thrust in their faces. It definitely worked for us.

Rush Week (1989) — Watchable (just barely) but also highly predictable late 1980s slasher that has some good-bad moments here and there, but not nearly enough to make it a recommendation. The lead actress, Pamela Ludwig, was at least easy on the eyes and gives an okay performance, but everything else really doesn't work. Heck, the end feels like the culmination of a Scooby-Doo episode. **¼/*****

The Devil Times Five Kino Lorber/Code Red BD
An overwrought family gathering is disrupted by a group of murderous children who've escaped from an institution.
A fun '70s "B" movie that pretty much delivers the Low-Budget Exploitation goods. It doesn't all work, but that's kind of its charm. Good supplements, and surprisingly good picture quality.

Safe House (2012) — Tries really hard to be a Bourne-like espionage-thriller and while the action sequences aren't as well done, still has some entertaining moments. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington have some great scenes together. Kind of surprised, given it's Universal, there hadn't been a few direct-to-video sequels at this point... ***¾/*****
