Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

A fascinating HBO doc on Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill two big NY columnists who are now deceased.

Elizabethtown (2005) — Charming if not uneven romantic-drama-comedy that has its moments though Orlando Bloom's narration felt stilted at times, but I liked his interactions with Kirsten Dunst. A bit weak compared with Cameron Crowe's other works, still liked it enough. ***½/*****

The Parallax View (1974) — Slow paced but decent political thriller. Not as good as something like The Manchurian Candidate (both versions) or Three Days of the Condor, but engaging enough with a fine performance by Warren Beatty. ***½/*****

Willow (1998) on Disney+, as I continue to revisit some of my “childhood” films with my son who is now around the same age I was. Good God, did I forget what a colossal piece of shit this was and is, The Phantom Menace levels of bad for many of the same reasons. Despite only being credited for the story, Lucas’ fingerprints are all over this.

Sad this is going to be more common with automation taking over everything

Jetsons: The Movie (1990) — Harmless family film that, as an adult, doesn't have a whole lot to offer. I actually saw this back in 1990 but don't remember what I thought then, course I was only 9 so... Anyway, the animation is fine though the voice acting wasn't great, Tiffany as Judy especially seemed off. Some of the music was also pretty dull and unremarkable. But it's still watchable and thankfully only 82-minutes. **½/*****

Showtime
Whittacker, Wilkinson, and Hedlund were great.
Those KKK dudes hate blacks but don't mind eating spicy food in a Indian restaurant.

First time I watched it I was not in a good mood after the 49ers lost the 2011 NFC Championship to the Giants
Now I appreciate it more.

Captain Blood (1935) - Flynn's first starring role has him sporting a goofy haircut but is otherwise very entertaining. 19 year old OdH is charming. (HBO Max)

I think it's that way for everyone in this thread. I noticed it because it looks exactly like the kind of film I would appreciate. If you haven't seen it, check out Ken Loach's most recent film, Sorry We Missed You, which is on a similar theme of working-class struggles. I thought it was great. Possibly the best film of this venerable director. I felt reinvigorated while I was watching it, and thought, This is why I fell in love with cinema! I haven't felt that way in quite some time.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon (2021)
A 1970s set Batman animated movie where he's working with a team of martial artists. It had some fun ideas it and I liked that it paid some nods to 1970s action and martial arts movies, but overall it was good, not great. I don't think it's very rewatchable.
I'd give it a B- I say wait until it hits HBO Max in a few months or rent it from Red Box really cheap. Don't go out of your way to own the disc and over pay for the digital copy.

The Allnighter (1987) — Not great even in regards to this sort of genre, but it's light-hearted enough and I did like Susanna Hoffs (from the Bangles) in the lead even if the dialogue was pretty poor at times. But for what it is, I thought it was okay. ***/*****

Hulu
Leah Thompson directs her two daughters and written by Madelyn Deutch though it must have been awkward to direct those sex scenes.
It was not bad though maybe it lagged in the final 20 minutes.

I got it from Netflix two weeks ago and finally watched it
It sucked and the CGI was atrocious.
A weird movie to highlight the abuses of caged animals in Africa.

Jaws 3-D - While I had seen bits and pieces over the years, I had never actually seen this all the way through. It probably should have stayed that way. Lea Thompson was adorable (Dennis Quaid noticed too). (HBO Max)

Se7en (1995)
No matter how many times I've watched this film, I've never grown tired of it.
Simply fantastic.

Psycho Goreman (2020)
I wasn't a huge fan of Steven Kostanski's work on Leprechaun Returns (2018) but was excited to see him jump into his own stuff again with this film.
It's Kostanski through and through, which I loved. Practical FX were fun and though all of the humor didn't hit for me, the parts that did, had me laughing for quite a bit.
It was also awesome to see a mini-Astron-6 Reunion, with Adam Brooks having a role in this film, as well as Connor Sweeney & Matthew Kennedy (both under FX makeup).

Come Play (2020) — Some okay moments amongst some silly ones (I'll never find something come out of a phone all that scary). But the performances were earnest and admittedly I was relatively entertained. Reminded me a little of David F. Sandburg's Lights Out in some ways, which like this probably better served as a segment on Tales from the Crypt or something. ***/*****

I saw it and except for a few moments it was mostly forgettable and not a lot of dialogue to keep me interested though I like Gillian Jacobs
