The Doorman Amazon Streaming 4K
Ruby Rose, Jean Reno D: R Kitamura

One of those films with Romania standing in for New York. Not at all terrible, but I couldn't in any way recommend it.

The Underneath (1995) — One of Steven Soderbergh's early films, a bit too slow of a burn neo-noir, character study that features some fine performances by Peter Gallagher and Alison Elliott. Wasn't completely enamored with the movie but the last 30-minutes were okay though low on the list from Soderbergh, not that it's bad nor would I not recommend it but maybe as a rental. ***/*****

Oldman was great as usual but the movie was long and did not draw my interest.

Maybe if you are a big fan of this era in Hollywood and Citizen Kane you will love it.

One of my favs and now include it in my top ten of all-time after a 3rd viewing.

Too bad they don't make movies like this anymore

Dawn of the Dead Shout Factory
D: Zack Snyder

George Romero's original has a special place in my heart, but this is a solid Horror/Action film. The PQ is a bit harsh, -though no doubt true to it's source; I imagine a 4K version might do it some real favors, but Universal would probably only provide the R-Rated version.

Prince of Darkness Shout Factory 4K

I'm the odd John Carpenter fan that prefers this film to "They Live". It's a terrific little "Siege" film with a great score and filled with riffs on quantum mechanics that Carpenter admits is pretty much BS.

James Franco and Aaron Paul were so young in 2000.

Who knew Paul would eventually become this bad ass in Breaking Bad after seeing this.

Captain America: Civil War - Restarted my Marvel rewatch. While I understand why the scene is there, I still think Tony going to Queens stops the forward momentum of the movie. (MA)

Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring - Next middle-earth movie. I continue to consider this the best of all of Jackson's middle-earth films. (MA)

Blade II - Hadn't seen this since the theater. There are some interesting visual flairs at the start, but this ultimately didn't amount to much for me. (HBO Max)

The Man-Made Monster (S: Lionel Atwill, Lon Chaney Jr.). Chaney's breakthrough movie that got him the role of Wolfman. Mostly by the numbers, but it was interesting to see Chaney happy and smiling. It didn't last. (Svengoolie)

The Big Short. Starts with the exciting premise that some individuals spot a flaw in the stock market that will allow them to get rich. Ends with the tragic realization that the corrupt Wall Street insiders who got rich did so by taking enough money to collapse the world economy and damage the lives of millions of people. Peak shaky-cam cinematography - I remember when it was the hallmark of amateur camerawork to zoom in and out or be unable to keep your subject in frame. It was so annoying that Mrs Danger spent a lot of time with her eyes closed.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Stretch (2014) — Absolutely hilarious crime-comedy with Patrick Wilson pitch perfect in the lead and Chris Pine, who for some reason was uncredited despite having a significant role, playing an insane character. Shows Joe Carnahan's range as a filmmaker going from a dark, gritty crime-drama like Narc to an off-the-wall crime-comedy like this. Probably deserves more attention than it seems to have received... ****/*****

Love Story (1970) — Well acted tear-jerker has some nice scenes and dialogue between Ryan O'Neil and Ali MacGraw, and thankfully not overly schmaltzy. Today this sort of thing would be on Lifetime but back in 70 was a box office hit. Not sure it's something I'll watch again anytime soon but decent for a romance-drama. ***/*****

Hulu

Maybe if more people saw it it could be a breakthrough role for Zoey Deutsch though she is still getting work and not suffering.

I liked it and anything dealing with Buffalo and the Bills too is a bonus

I, too, love this movie. But, please, please go on YouTube and look up "Stretch Outtakes with Patrick Wilson and Chris Pine". It has me laughing out loud everytime I see it. They just seemed to have such a fun time making the movie and Chris Pine just cracks Wilson up every take...It's hilarious...trust me...check it out...

Best in Show - Christopher Guest

I couldn't find the main discussion thread, did they film this in the middle of a real dog show? How did they get all those other people and dogs?

But anyways, very funny.

Lupin The Third: The First Amazon Streaming (burning off some digital credits)
New CG-animated film of the long-running Anime character. Absolutely terrific, -fast-moving and a lot of fun with a great jazzy score.

Freaky (2020) — Fun horror-comedy akin to Happy Death Day (and would make for a good double header) with two amusing performances from Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. It's a nice twist on the body-switching formula and even though has the cliches in terms of the high school aspect (such as the flamboyant gay best friend), still found it entertaining. ***/*****

The Little Things (2021) on HBO Max. Period cop thriller set in the 1990s with Denzel Washington playing a former LAPD detective who now works as a Kern County Sheriff. He ends up being involved in a serial killer investigation that brings back some dark memories from his past. Rami Malek plays a detective who works with him. It's an Okay movie at most. Like the setting and there are some good performances, but it's a slow burn story and honestly it's not very memorable. This is something that you will likely forget within weeks.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) - Saw this in the theaters way back in the early 80s and then I saw the tree house at Disneyland. Honestly, I didn't think it held up much as an entertainment (Disney+)

Flashpoint (1984) - Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams are border patrol agents who find a trunk full of cash in a buried vehicle at the border. Thought the movie was never really as urgent as it needed to be to really work, but it has its moments. (HBO Max)

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Little Things (2021) — Okay movie made watchable thanks to Washington, Malek and to some extent Leto. Is a bit slow so does take a bit of patience to get to the end, but it's worth checking out. In addition, this is a movie that deserves the straight-to-streaming treatment and not pay to see in theaters. ***/*****
