American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts & Gore (2014)

A fantastic showcase for not only Marcus Koch's FX work but also Jim Van Bebber's Cinematography.

If you've seen the 1985 film Guinea Pig: Flowers of Flesh & Blood, you know what to expect here, as the infamous Japanese series (directly) inspired Director Stephen Biro's series.

Everything about that film though seems to be cranked up to 150% with this Stateside film.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Back to the Future - Gave my new 4K disc a test drive. I saw this movie many, many times during my formative years so even though it has been a good while since I've seen it I still pretty much know all the dialogue. I rarely watch a lot of these 80s movies that I "overwatched" back in the day, but I thoroughly enjoyed this re-watch, and it was a nice reminder that I probably should re-watch films like this more often.

Vacancy - I appreciate lean, tightly edited films though I kept waiting for Chekhov's sparkler to come back; I guess he wanted to stick with the gun. Thought the very end was a bit of a cop out but reading through this movie's thread that is not a singular appraisal.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Fun film. Adrienne King is great in this.

No matter how many times I watch this film, I'm always distracted by Tom Savini's hairy hands in a particular scene

Edge of the Axe Tubi TV

I always see this title in the Arrow Video sales and have been tempted to pick it up as a blind buy, -I just never have pulled the trigger. I found it for free (with ads) on Tubi, so I gave it a look.

It's a pretty basic late '80s Slasher flick, -a mysterious axe-murderer stalks a small rural town. Lots of quaint moments, as this was early in the home computer culture (with a voice-over reciting all messages typed on the display screen). They clearly used a rubber axe for the attacks, -it just shouldn't be so obvious to the audience. Most of the Suspense scenes are flat-footed. On the other hand, there's a nice sort of "off the cuff" quality to the performances that breathes some life into the characters. In truth, I found it reasonably entertaining.

Great video quality.

Siren Netflix

A groom-to-be and his pals are looking for a few cheap thrills, and end up in a creepy Gentleman's Club out in the woods. There they encounter a mysterious young woman in a private room who harbors an otherworldly secret.

This expands on a story from the Horror anthology V-H-S from a few years back. I have a soft spot for low-budget filmmakers trying to make the best of what they've been given. This is a pretty solid little film; you just have to forgive some pretty basic CGI.

The Mummy (Tom Cruise)

Pleasant surprise. Not as bad as the critics. Slight twist on the Mummy stories. I did like how it ended.

Climax Amazon Prime French (Sub-Titled)

A group of young dancers are unwittingly dosed with LSD at an after-party and descend into Hell.

When you watch a Gaspar Noe film you have to prepare for a head-trip and he certainly gives you one here. This one goes to some very dark places with no relief. There are also some stand-out visuals including an extended Dance sequence, and a lengthy disorienting section that plays upside-down. It's an Art Film, and it has a message (sometimes there are literal messages on the screen), but I'm not entirely sure what the message is. Love it or hate it, though, it's a harrowing film.

It was the first time that I really felt like Tom Cruise was showing his age given that his best friend and leading lady were designed for an actor 15-20 years younger than him. It was like Jim Carrey in Yes Man.

It definitely felt like the part was written for a thirty-year-old (with that behavior and mind-set) rather than a 50+-year-old, who would be more "seasoned".

Ford vs Ferrari. I mostly liked the movie. Mrs Danger thought that the added drama about the corporate politics was tiresome. After we watched the movie, I looked up the facts. The movie is about as historically accurate as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And, that added drama about corporate politics which irritated Mrs Danger was all fictional. It would have been a better movie if it had stuck closer to the facts. Why do studios think they have to add a villain to a plot about putting together a team and accomplishing something extraordinary?

I watched Gilda today. I've never seen a Rita Hayworth movie before. I now know what all the fuss was about. She's stunning and great in this movie. 4/5

I liked it though it was kind of strange.

Too bad Downey Jr does not do more movies like this.

Sad what happened to the real Diane Arbus at the end which was not covered in the movie.

No Man's Land (1987) - I'm pretty sure I saw this in the '80s, but I also thought Carey Lowell was in it so maybe I have it confused with Dangerously Close. I thought Sheen and DB Sweeney were better than the movie.

Black Box (2020)

Solid performances from Mamoudou Athie & Phylicia Rashad.

The film has some fun ideas but goes in directions I didn't care for in its final 40+ minutes.

World War Z (Unrated) - Hadn't watched this in a few years. Still enjoy it. I know there was a lot of talk of a sequel, but I am good with this being a one off.

For a while, IMDB had listed David Fincher as the director of the sequel, which got my hopes up, but I assume it's never going to happen, -with anybody.

Nightmare Cinema

This almost was a blind buy during the current Kino Lorber sale, but then I found it on DVD at my County Library (curb service only).
This is an Anthology film with five Horror stories by five directors including Mick Garris, Joe Dante, and David Slade. Dark in tone, extravagant amounts of Gore.
Despite the names involved this just didn't engage me. I guess I dodged a bullet.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Bourne Identity (2002) — Lost count the number of times I've watched The Bourne Identity but it's still a fantastic action-thriller with Matt Damon perfectly cast in the lead which if I recall at the time he was only known for dramas. Some issues with how the sequels were handled, mainly (in TBU) the suggestion Bourne and Nicki (Julia Stiles) had some sort past relationship when it's pretty clear he was just another black ops agent. In any case, still works almost 20 years later and I'm sure I'll revisit this one again. ****/*****

The Owners (2020)
— Nothing overly original and starts off well enough but kind of drags after the first 20-minutes or so with some spots of good suspense, just not nearly enough to make it a recommendation. The performances for the most part were good, including Maisie Williams and Sylvester McCoy. **/*****

I have watched most of her movies but I have to say that this is my favourite movie of hers without question so far. Glenn Ford and George Macready are great too and the relationship between them is toxic to say the least. That entrance! Gets me every single time.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Back in 2003 when these type of comedies would get theatrical releases.

Not a classic but a nice watch and a reminder of a better time.

Stiller put out a lot of comedies in the early to mid 2000's and then seemed to be more selective or semi-retired since he has not done a lot of comedies in the 2010's and beyond.
