Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Flash Gordon (1980) — Campy and fun science fiction fantasy-adventure flick has some cheesy but colorful and good production designs and the performances for the most part were fine, with Max Von Sydow lending prestige to a goofy character and Sam J. Jones was okay in the lead, but he's really not asked to do a whole lot (both in acting and fighting) while Melody Anderson was alright though the "romance" between her and Flash Gordon was a bit forced. And for its time, I thought the special/visual effects were adequate, superior to the likes of Superman 3 & 4 released years later (1983/1987). Enjoyable time waster and would probably revisit again. ****/*****

Becky...absolutely bat shit insane, but in a very good way. such a grisly movie that really takes you by surprise. i mean it's hard to root for a 13 year-old who clearly turns psychotic, even when the movie is done, but it sure was fun watching the transformation. Kevin James wasn't bad, but the girl who played Becky was really good and the movie is a fun, B-movie murderous romp.

I really do wish more of the film was similar to the first 15-minutes.
Watched this film about a week ago.

Watched a French film "The Take (2016) on Netflix. The film streamed for most of the movie without English subtitles when the French language was spoken.

It's supposedly the most popular film on Netflix this week. I checked on IMDB and there were several mentions of the lack of sub-titles; the Blu-ray had French and English subtitles, so perhaps this was an oversight. The film was originally titled "Bastielle Day".

Note: So I went home to check it out for myself and the six or so scenes I checked were subtitled. Perhaps I just checked the wrong scenes, or it depends on the device, or maybe they fixed it. I'll probably check the film out sooner or later and then I'll know for sure.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Blue Thunder Amazon Prime

I've been re-visiting the '80s Action films in my collection and I realized I didn't have a copy of "Blue Thunder". I surprised to find the Blu-ray had a high asking price, -even the Mill Creek re-release. However, Sunday it turned up on Prime so I gave it a spin. It's still a fun movie, and Roy Scheider is definitely the glue that holds it together, with his innate credibility selling some of the more outlandish events later in the film. You also get support from Warren Oates and Malcolm McDowell. It goes for the "R" rating, though a few years later I imagine they'd have softened it for a PG-13. Even so, when Warren Oates refers to someone as a "silly twit", you can see his mouth is using another term. A year later it would become a TV series with James Farentino, Bubba Smith, Dick Butkus, and Dana Carvey as "JAFO". The film presented "Blue Thunder" as a potential threat, even though the director fetishizes the helicopter at every opportunity. The series took a lighter approach, with "Thunder" as our friend.

That opening scene with Angie in the shower wow though maybe some double work was involved.

Maybe this movie could not be made today and you would piss off the LBGTQ crowd.

Nancy Allen though she was annoying in the Robocop movies and can't act for shit was smoking in this movie.

Prisoner X - another low-budget sci-fi movie on Prime Video. I mostly liked it, though it wasn't difficult to see the ending coming a mile away.

The Dark Half Amazon Prime

I hadn't watched the film since I saw it in the theater years ago. The Shout Factory blu is now OOP and posting a big asking price. It's been in my Amazon Prime Watchlist for a while, so I thought I'd give it another look.
"The Dark Half" is George Romero's adaptation of a Stephen King novel. Timothy Hutton plays an author who kills off his most popular character, only to have the character materialize in the real world with the intention of killing off his creator. The first hour is solid, -the performances are good, and there's a great Autumnal atmosphere. Unfortunately, like the book it adapts, the film just goes on and on. The Deus Ex Machina that provides the conclusion of the story just feels like its coming from an entirely different movie.
Apparently Timothy Hutton, -who's currently "cancelled" for one thing or another, -gave Romero and the other actors (Amy Madigan, Michael Rooker) headaches throughout the production.

I thought it was decent and I don't understand the harsh reviews

Common had a sick ride.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Addams Family (animated) Amazon Prime 4K UHD
I'm always willing to give the 4K stuff a shot. This was something of a disappointment. I was expecting a Theatrical release to look a bit more ...Theatrical, but this felt off from the get-go; I disliked the character designs and the voices, and the "frames" seemed overly bright and empty-looking. Obviously, this was aimed for a younger audience than me, but I don't even see the appeal in any case. Definitely lacks the spooky atmosphere of the old show, or the previous Sonnenfeld films. I just couldn't hang with this for longer than 20 minutes.

Teddy (2020)

French Werewolf film by Ludovic & Zoran Boukherma (Willy 1er).

While there are one or two neat Body Horror moments, the film does struggle with what makes Werewolf films so much fun.

It's a shame that so much of the violence in this film is completely off-screen.

100 Best Kills: DECAPATTACK! (2020)

Fantastic Fest 2020 (Online) clip compilation of 100 decapitations & head explosions.

This was a whole lot of fun and it was great to see clips from a good handful of films I hadn't heard of previously.

I always laugh a bit too hard at the decapitation scene from Samurai Cop (1991)

The Creeping Flesh Amazon Prime

Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing. Directed by Freddie Francis.
A dotty old scientist (Cushing) discovers an ancient skeleton which holds the genetic origin of Evil.
On paper it sounds pretty cool, but … There are times when the film is so "Period British Drama" it feels like a Python-ish parody. Rather than dealing with the prospect of a hulking skeleton coming back to life, it mostly follows Cushing's prim and very sheltered daughter being infected with "Evil" and transforming into a slutty lunatic. The low budget and a PG level of restraint did this one in for me, though Lee and Cushing certainly give it some polish.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Shivers (1975) — Fun horror movie that reminded me a bit of Dawn of the Dead (one location, people being "infected" and going after one another (hungry for flesh so to speak) and the few survivors fighting for their lives. Not great per se but still entertaining and a solid debut for David Cronenberg (well, feature length anyway). ***/*****

It felt like watching a cheesy Lifetime movie.

I did not know it was Simon Pegg until I saw him show his face near the end of the movie.

I Love Your Guts (2020)

Short Film Directed by David Janove.

Part Coming-of-Age film, part Slasher film, the performances here are all solid, with the film's tension & humor hitting well.

Jack and Jo Don't Want To Die (2020)

Short Film Directed by Kantu Lentz.

Wonderful Science Fiction film with a whole lot of heart. The ending brought such a big smile to my face.

Great performances from Justin Kirk & Olivia Edward.

Solution For Sadness (2020)

Short Film Directed by Marc Martinez Jordan.

The plot revolves around a woman searching for an end to her sadness, leading her to find a Gorilla Mask in a bag, randomly in her backyard one day. She realizes after she puts it on, that not everything is quite what it seems anymore.

This film was hilarious and strange in all the right places.

Forbidden To See Us Scream In Tehran (2020)

Short Film Directed by Farbod Ardebili.

Before seeing this film on the Fantastic Fest 2020 schedule, I knew that it was illegal to play Heavy Metal in Iran. That piece of knowledge made me very excited to check out this film.

The film has consistency in it's performances, which are wonderful.

Please Hold (2020)

Short Film Directed by KD Davila.

The plot takes place in a future where drones are used not only to deliver packages but to arrest individuals.

The entire film revolves on a case of mistaken identity staying interesting until the last few minutes or so.

I really enjoyed all the annoying automated menus & machines
