In my mind the best submarine movie ever.
One of Hanz Zimmer's best scores.
Not one girl in this movie except at the birthday party.
If they made it today they would probably put a girl as the co-lead.

I do like the majority of Egoyan films (and I should add, he gives absolutely terrific commentaries; they come across as academic at times, but never in an unappealing or condescending way), but he's also made a lot of stuff that just makes me puzzled with how bad they are. I hate Calendar (even though it is somewhat critically acclaimed), I absolutely hated Adoration, and I was incredibly, enormously dissapointed in Devil's Knot. It had everything going for it; a great cast, a usually great direction, and was based on a great (although horrific) true story. Maybe my expectations were too high but I thought Egoyan failed that film on every single level. It was terrible. But the, he does stuff like The Adjuster, The Sweet Hereafter, and Exotica that pretty much leave you speechless. I also like reading interviews with him. He's kind of like Cronenberg in that way; even when I don't really like a movie they made, I'm always fascinated by them discussing their films and explaining why they made the decisions they did.

My wife and I have been visiing some of her family in Kansas and watched "Smokey and the Bandit" last night, it was both nostalgic and yet humorous for all the wrong reasons - yet another film that could not be made today.

I just got this movie from my library and I had forgotten the controversy about it, took a little time to get going, but I enjoyed it.
"Come on, you can’t… She’s a woman."
"do you think you should be afforded mercy just because you’re a girl?"
".... no?"

The Poseidon Adventure (1972) — Seen this one several times over the years and still is fantastic, from the performances (Hackman and Borgnine especially) to some genuinely emotional scenes to the incredible set designs. Not sure if I place this over The Towering Inferno, but think it might be 1A and 1B amongst disaster films. ****˝/*****

I remember seeing "Exotica" in the theater on a whim and being just stunned by it. I saw "The Sweet Hereafter" in the theater because of "Exotica", but I more respected it than enjoyed it. I kind of lost track of him over time, though I now remember watching "Where The Truth Lies" on home video because I was intrigued by the premise (kind of a sinister take on the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis relationship).

Gone Girl - Liked it much, much more upon second viewing. I remember the first time I had issues with but I don't really understood the intention or the acting styles. I mean, I understood the motives and all that, but felt it was...I don't..."too pulp" for Fincher's talents...Since, I've grown to appreciate Affleck's talents, who I think is the standout of the movie. I still like Rosamund Pike, but feel that it's Affleck that deserves more acclaim. I especially like the middle-to-last-half of the movie. There's a great montage that must've been aided by a helluva an editor(s). Just a solid movie. Not one of Fincher's best, but in most other director's hands this could've just been horribly trite and cliche...

Angel (1984) — Better than expected, and not nearly as sleazy as expected, drama-suspenser with a fine performance from the lead actress and has shades of many similar films (psycho killer on the lose) of the 70s and 80s thrillers (reminded me somewhat of Vice Squad (1982). ***˝/*****

Maybe if you liked the Grudge moves this is in your wheelhouse.
Surprisingly they got a lot of good actors for this movie.

On Amazon Prime. Not bad, not great. Good cast.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990) — Okay anthology horror movie, the first one, "Lot 249", was the best due to the cast (Slater, Buscemi, Moore) and also enjoyed "Lover's Vow" even if the animatronic effects weren't the best. However, "Cat from Hell" really dragged the film as a whole down, almost dozed off a couple of times during that segment, although the ending of that one was gross. The wrap-around story was fine with a fun conclusion I guess. ***˝/*****

The dog and the girl Hermione Corfield the only highlights in the movie.
Margot Robbie was in 3 scenes.

G-Loc (2020) — Halfway decent low budget sci-fi thriller featuring a fine performance from Stephen Moyer and okay ones from Casper Van Dien whose only role is being a menace and spot exposition. Tala Gouveia was alright during the action scenes but during the few sit-down dialogue moments is a bit questionable. At the very least the effects were passable while set design was basic and on the cheap side. All in all, better than expected for a DTV flick. ***/*****

Was totally blown away by this film. The director, Gavin Rothery, pulled a Robert Rodriguez/Gareth Edwards by writing, directing, production design, animation, visual effects, storyboarding, etc., and it's one of my favorite films of the year so far. Thematically, it works great alongside Moon. Whatever you do, do not read reviews or spoilers. Watch the trailer and then go in for a blind buy or blind rental. It's available on all streaming platforms. I bought it from PRIME in HD because I had $6 in digital credit. I will definitely buy the Blu-ray once it is released.

Avenging Angel (1985) — There are a few fun moments, mostly involving the cowboy, but otherwise this sequel has a thin plot (even by B-movie standards) and really no need for Molly to go back to her Angel lifestyle as that side never really figured anything out. Oh, and babies are dumb, amazing any of us make it to adulthood. **˝/*****

This never appeared on any of the premium movie channels so got it from Netflix so I could see all the movies from that trilogy.
Back in 2016 when Netflix disabled the bonus features.

Ford v Ferrari - I'm not into cars or racing, but I really enjoyed this. The race scenes are tense and both Bale and Damon turn in great performances.
